Feline asthma syndrome, previously recognized only in domestic cats, was diagnosed in three captive African lions (Panthera leo), one of which died as a result of the condition. Two of the lions displayed progressive signs for 7 yr, including severe bouts of coughing, wheezing, dyspnea, rhonchi, and tachypnea that were most severe during the spring and summer, and the third lion displayed acute signs only once. Scattered to diffuse increased interstitial markings, peribronchial cuffing, and focal atelectasis were visible in radiographs. At necropsy, multiple subpleural bullae, 2-3 cm in diamet

We assessed the prevalence of symptoms suggestive of asthma in Turkish Cypriot schoolchildren and the associated risk factors using a slightly modified version of the ISAAC (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood) questionnaire. The questionnaire and questions regarding risk factors were issued to the parents of 2,822 children aged six to 14 years. The response rate was 89.6 percent. The cumulative and 12-month prevalence of wheezing were 14.7 and 4.8 percent, respectively. The prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma was 11.4 percent. Family history of atopy was the stronges

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is implicated in the pathogenesis of respiratory symptoms in childhood. It should be taken into account especially in the differential diagnosis of children presenting with wheezing. Although, oesophageal pH monitorization has been reported to be the best technique in the evaluation of GER, radionuclide studies have also been shown to be very sensitive recently. In this study, 82 children presenting with recurrent wheezing (n = 74) and/or vomiting (n = 28) (mean age 17.4 months; range 3-48 months) were evaluated. GER scintigraphy was performed to determine the fre

Wheezing in infants and children presents a difficult differential diagnosis contingent on the presenting symptoms and age of the child. A determination of the anatomy of the lower airway, combined with allergic, infectious, and noninfectious irritants, is requisite to a complete evaluation. The intervention strategies to decrease wheezing and bronchial hyperresponsiveness may include both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic management. The nonpharmacologic management of asthma in children is contingent on aggressive treatment of dietary protein sensitivity and strict environmental control. The

An increase in prevalence of wheezing illness in the UK has coincided with a reduction in the consumption of natural antioxidants, which may modulate the lung's response to oxidant stress, limiting the expression of airway inflammation and respiratory symptoms. The hypothesis that intakes and plasma levels of natural antioxidants would be determinants of adult-onset wheezing illness was tested. A nested case-control study was conducted in 94 cases with adult-onset wheeze and 203 controls aged 39-45 yrs identified in a 30-yr follow-up survey. Antioxidant intake was measured by a food frequency

Spirometric measurements of lung function are vital signs that unfortunately are not as widely used as blood pressure or cholesterol testing. Spirometry is an uncomplicated procedure that can easily be incorporated by primary care physicians into routine physical examinations, especially now that simple handheld spirometers suitable for all offices are available. Abnormal spirometric patterns can alert physicians to patients' additional risk of developing chronic lung disease and to the need for interventions that prevent or forestall morbidity and mortality. Spirometry also is an important to

A 9-month-old female infant with intractable wheezing and frequent aspiration pneumonia was poor response to the usual treatment for respiratory disease. The barium swallow test revealed barium aspirating into trachea directly. Because of the high-risk nature for aspiration in the swallowing disorder infant, a nasogastric tube feeding therapy was prescribed. Fortunately, her symptoms were greatly reduced. One month later, the clinical and roentgenographic findings strongly support a causal relationship between swallowing problem and wheezing. Therefore, swallowing problem should be considered

Gastroesophageal reflux (GOR) is a major cause of morbidity and failure to thrive particularly in neurologically impaired children. Clinical manifestations of GOR in children range from regurgitation, food refusal, irritability, failure to thrive, hematemesis, wheezing and aspiration pneumonia, apnoea and apparent life threatening events in infants to clinically silent reflux. Although, no one test is always best to diagnose GOR, 24 hour esophageal pH monitoring remains the 'gold standard' for diagnosis. Barium radiography is useful for the diagnosis of associated anatomical abnormalities and

This survey was conducted as part of the international multi-centre study to determine the prevalence of wheeze and asthma-related symptoms among school children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was conducted in June 1995. A standardized self-administered questionnaire developed by the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children (ISAAC) was used. The questionnaire was designed to offer a standardized epidemiological instrument to ensure comparison of results from wide range of countries. A total of 2951 children aged 13 and 14 years were enrolled into the study, of which 1393 (47.2%) w

The authors assessed the prevalence of symptoms of bronchial asthma by means of a standardized questionnaire used in the international survey PEACE (Pollution Effect on Asthmatic Children in Europe). The questions about complaints were addressed to children aged 6-13 years (the questionnaires were completed with the parents assistance). In urban areas 5669 children participated from Prague 5, i.e. 35% of all elementary school children, in Teplice 2489 (21% children), in rural areas: in the Benesov district 5619, i.e. 61% children, in the Prachatice district 1983, i.e. 37% children. Asthma is the most common chronic disorder of school-age children and youth, with rising prevalence in all over the world. By attention to the geographic area there is considerable difference in the prevalence of asthma. The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), was founded to maximize the value of epidemiological research into asthma and allergic disease by establishing a standardized methodology and facilitating international collaboration. To determine the prevalence of asthma and related symptoms in Kermanshah (a city in west of IRAN) schoolchildren and also ide

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary hypertension (PHT) is present in all children at birth, but its degree and rate of resolution in infants diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) need to be established.
STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-one ECMO/CDH survivors (aged 3.2 +/- 1.4 years) were prospectively evaluated by Doppler echocardiography (ECHO) to determine the presence of PHT. Twenty children without structural heart disease were used as controls. Study patients received a physical examination and an electrocardiograph examination, and their charts w

"Itchy" rashes occurring in patients (usually an infant or child) with a personal and/or family history of itching, sneezing, and/or wheezing should be considered part of the spectrum of skin problems labeled "atopic dermatitis" (AD). Multiple factors influence AD, and effective management requires that none be overlooked. The complicated nature of treatment means parents and family members require repeated reinforcement and education, particularly in avoiding "triggers of itch;" and use of medications. When all the aspects of AD are adequately addressed, more than 90% of patients with AD can

OBJECTIVES: This study was carried out to verify whether during neonatal stage gastroesophageal scintigraphy, may be useful not only to diagnose gastroesophageal reflux (GER), but also to detect pulmonary aspiration, at times responsible for respiratory symptoms frequently associated with GER.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Gastroesophageal scintigraphy was performed on 50 newborns admitted to NICU of Brindisi in the last two years who presented symptoms as cyanosis, apnoea, bradycardia, laringeal stridor, wheezing, not related to respiratory or cardiac problems, but suspected to be clinical suggestiv

Stridor in infants is a symptom that indicates partial obstruction of the large airways. Vascular rings are an unusual cause of tracheal compression which can induce stridor in infants and children. We report a 4-month-old boy with recurrent wheezing and stridor for 2 months. Spiral computed tomography (CT) and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction aided in the diagnosis of external compression on the trachea by an innominate artery. Successful relief of the airway's obstruction was achieved by aortopexy. Three months after surgery, he was symptom free without any medication.

A new, analytically valid procedure is described to assess the exposure of human beings to the so-called microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) in air. The method can be used routinely for large sample numbers and is especially valuable as a basis for further research on the correlation between single MVOCs and indoor mould growth. The procedure is based on the fact that fungi produce a variety of volatile organic compounds, such as 3-methylbutan-1-ol, 3-methylbutan-2-ol, fenchone, heptan-2-one, hexan-2-one, octan-3-one, octan-3-ol, pentan-2-ol, alpha-terpineol, and thujopsene, which the
