Impact of rapid maxillary expansion on nasal microbiota in mouth-breathing children: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary transverse deficiency (MTD) is a common malocclusion in children and is often associated with mouth breathing. Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is a conventional treatment for MTD; however, its association with nasal microbiota composition in mouth-breathing children remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate nasal microbial community composition before and after RME. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study. Thirty-two children aged 5–14 years were enrolled, including 16 with maxillary transverse deficiency (8 mouth-breathing and 8 nasal-breathing) and 16 healthy c

Screening for chronic mouth breathing, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea risks among Palestinian adults in the Gaza Strip during wartime conditions: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by complete/partial upper airway obstruction. The majority of patients with OSA remain undiagnosed. A screening tool is necessary to stratify patients based on their clinical symptoms, physical examination findings, and risk factors. Therefore, this study was conducted using the modified STOP-Bang questionnaire to investigate the risk of OSA in addition to chronic mouth breathing among adults in the Gaza Strip in Palestine who are living in very difficult circumstances as a result of the war. METHODS: 1000

Dental arch dimension and palatal morphology in children and adolescents with mouth breathing: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Mouth breathing (MB) may negatively affect facial and dental morphology in children, potentially causing malocclusion and other abnormalities. However, its effects, such as narrowing of the dental arches and a higher palatal vault, remain controversial. This study aimed to evaluate dental arch and palatal morphology in MB children, vital for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. METHODS: A search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, LILACS, and Scopus for studies published until December 2025. The review included clinical trials and observational studies comp

[Dysventilation, orthodontics, and orofacial myofunctional therapy].

INTRODUCTION: Dysventilation is a chronic alteration of physiological ventilation patterns, characterized by a predominance of mouth or mouth-nose breathing at rest. It should not be considered a simple symptom, but rather a functional disorder in its own right, capable of disrupting facial morphogenesis and promoting neurocognitive disorders. OBJECTIVE: Dysventilation is the cause of a dysmorpho-functional spiral. The aim of this article is to determine how its multidisciplinary management, particularly through orthodontics and orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT), can help put children bac

Revision Surgical Management of Refractory Nasal Vestibular Stenosis in an Exotic Shorthair Cat Using a Combined Surgical Technique and a Steroid-Eluting Implant (PROPEL Contour).

Severe nasal vestibular stenosis in brachycephalic cats involves species-specific anatomical structures distinct from those in dogs, often leading to a high recurrence rate even after standard surgical correction. This case report introduces an innovative surgical strategy for a refractory Exotic Shorthair cat presenting with obligate open-mouth breathing and complete nasal obstruction despite three previous surgical interventions. To remove the recurrent scar tissue and maximize the nasal vestibular lumen, a combined surgical approach was performed, incorporating a ventral vertical resection,

Effects of graded prevention intervention combined with minimally invasive restoration on the oral health trajectory of caries-susceptible children.

Caries-susceptible children show progressive oral health decline caused by ecological imbalance, poor saliva function and unhealthy habits. Conventional single-mode interventions fail to deliver precise and sustained control. This prospective, single-center, randomized controlled trial investigated graded prevention plus minimally invasive restoration for improving oral health trajectory in these children, to support precise caries control. A total of 186 caries-susceptible children aged 3-6 years were randomly assigned to observation and control groups (n = 93 each). The control group receive

The Effect of Night-Time Feeding on Steer Performance After Terminal Sort.

Heat stress occurs when total environmental and metabolic heat production is greater than an animal's ability to dissipate that heat. Heat stress negatively impacts feeder cattle performance and welfare. Limited research has been conducted to determine if feeding cattle in the evening, thereby shifting their metabolic heat production to a cooler period of the day, can help mitigate heat stress. This pen-level randomized controlled trial evaluated the effects of evening feeding (PM; feedings at 2000, 2300, and 0200 h; n = 24 pens) versus morning feeding (AM; feedings at 0500, 0800, and 1200 h;

Relative stability of Streptococcus mutans gtfB expression following short-term probiotic exposure in mouth-breathing children: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Mouth-breathing induces alterations in the oral environment that may promote microbial dysbiosis. Streptococcus mutans is a major cariogenic bacterium associated with mouth-breathing conditions, with the gtfB gene representing a key virulence determinant involved in bacterial pathogenicity. However, the molecular response of virulence gene expression under altered respiratory conditions remains insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study aimed to investigate the relative stability of gtfB gene expression following short-term probiotic exposure in mouth-breathing childre

Dental Calculus as a Potential Early Sign of Oral Functional Decline: A Hypothesis-Generating Case Series.

Dental calculus is generally considered a consequence of inadequate plaque control. However, in clinical practice, calculus is sometimes observed repeatedly at specific intraoral sites despite reasonable oral hygiene. Such site-specific, recurrent calculus may reflect localized salivary stagnation associated with oral functional decline rather than hygiene alone. This hypothesis-generating case series describes three clinical presentations involving four patients and explores this possibility. The three presentations included two pediatric cases with localized lingual calculus on the mandibula
