INTRODUCTION: Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a complex spectrum of cephalic malformations resulting from incomplete prosencephalic division. Semilobar HPE is an intermediate variant, often associated with significant craniofacial dysmorphism and neurological morbidity.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a preterm female infant born to a mother with unmanaged gestational diabetes. At birth, she exhibited microcephaly, total arhinia, and a median cleft lip and palate. MRI confirmed semilobar HPE. Clinical progression included hypotonia, seizures, and recurrent hyperpyrexia associated with hypothalamic d

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) often impairs social and academic functioning in children due to disruptive motor and vocal tics. Minimally invasive and patient-driven interventions are desirable, yet existing treatments do not always provide rapid or sustained relief. This study evaluates the clinical outcomes of the Nasal Airway Respiration Anti-tic (NARA) method—a non-invasive, lip-closed nasal breathing technique—for children with TS. METHODS: In this uncontrolled retrospective case series, we identified all 8 consecutive pediatric patients (5 boys, 3 girls; ages 6–10) meeting DSM-5 cri

Nasal breathing is an underrecognized and poorly understood component of maternal physiology. Pregnancy remodels nearly every physiologic system, yet whether breathing occurs through the nose or mouth is often overlooked. The nose undergoes hormonally driven adaptations beginning early in gestation. Rising estrogen and progesterone engorge the nasal turbinates, increase mucosal edema, and progressively raise nasal airflow resistance. These changes are frequently dismissed as benign; however, they may carry consequences that extend beyond congestion. This narrative review examines the physiolog

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with reproducible oral microbiome dysbiosis mediated by five simultaneous biological pathways: chronic intermittent hypoxia-driven immune dysregulation, obligate mouth breathing causing salivary desiccation, elevated salivary glucose promoting cariogenic biofilm proliferation, gastroesophageal reflux acid challenge, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activation suppressing mucosal immunity. The December 2024 FDA approval of tirzepatide for moderate-to-severe OSA and the emergence of retatrutide and orforglipron have placed GLP-1 recepto

Background/Objectives: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), including obstructive sleep apnea, is common in children and is associated with mouth breathing, snoring, and neurobehavioral disturbances. In pediatric orthodontic patients, oral habits and craniofacial imbalances may contribute to airway dysfunction, making orthodontic evaluation a potential setting for early identification of SDB. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of SDB and to evaluate its associations with parent-reported behavioral symptom profiles in a cohort of pediatric orthodontic patients. Methods: A multicenter cros

BACKGROUND: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) reduces dead-space ventilation, but this effect is diminished by open-mouth breathing and partial airway obstruction. Consequently, it is uncertain whether HFNC provides respiratory support during endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) procedures.
METHODS: A single-center randomized controlled crossover study was conducted at the Rijnstate Hospital, Arnhem, the Netherlands, from November 2022 to August 2024.Patients with severe COPD (Gold III/IV) were evaluated to determine if HFNC reduces dead space ventilation during an EBUS procedure. Dental calculus accumulation is traditionally attributed to inadequate oral hygiene; however, oral function may also influence its formation. This case report describes a patient who presented with a sudden increase in calculus formation on the lingual surface of mandibular anterior teeth, despite no changes in oral hygiene habits. Clinical assessment revealed lip incompetence and signs suggestive of mouth breathing following prolonged mask use. A functional oral intervention, focusing on tongue mobility, bilateral mastication, and lip competence, was implemented without modifying brushing ins

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether clinically assessed mouth-breathing severity is independently associated with polysomnography–defined obstructive sleep apnea severity in children with adenoidal hypertrophy and/or tonsillar hypertrophy, and to evaluate its potential as a non-invasive predictor of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed pediatric inpatients admitted for planned adenotonsillectomy at Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital. Based on a mouth-breathing score (range 1–7), patients were categorized into mild (scores 1–3) or severe (scores 4–7) mou

BACKGROUND: Though children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) possess an elevated risk for sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), progression of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) across childhood and optimal screening approach remain unclear. Improved understanding of SDB symptomatology and relationship to OSA may simplify screening. This study longitudinally describes SDB symptom profile in children with SCA and examines how they evolve in relation to upper-airway anatomy.
METHODS: Patients with SCA aged 2-18 years were prospectively recruited. Demographic data, clinical assessments, and upper airway exa

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of orthodontic-induced gingival enlargement (OIGE) or orthodontic-induced gingival overgrowth (OIGO) is multifactorial and is related to issues such as poor oral hygiene and the hormonal changes that are common during puberty. It is known that brackets facilitate the accumulation of dysbiotic microbial biofilm and that mechanical stress on the periodontium is a possible factor in the development of OIGE. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to analyze the principal factors involved in the pathogenesis of OIGE.
METHODS: Independent reviewers performed
