Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, typically affects the liver and lungs. However, cyst development in rare anatomical sites presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We conducted a narrative review using a structured search of PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar (first 200 records), with predefined eligibility criteria and dual-reviewer screening where applicable. Findings were synthesized narratively; numeric summaries reflect reporting frequency among included case-level reports rather than prevalence or comparative effectiveness. Seventeen studies (case reports

The preparation of biocompatible scaffolds from natural substances for tissue engineering offers a beneficial alternative to synthetic materials for tissue repair. In this study, we prepared and characterized a composite scaffold composed of chitosan (CS), nano-hydroxyapatite (n-Hap), and graphene oxide (GO) for bone repair, and investigated its optimal composition. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) test were employed to analyze the individual components and characterize the structure, morphology, and properties of t

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic infection caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. While the lungs are frequently affected, rib involvement and chest wall invasion are extremely rare, occurring in less than 2.5% of cases. We report a rare case of recurrent hydatid disease exhibiting infiltrative growth into the costal trabeculae and lung parenchyma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old man presented with weight loss. He had a history of splenectomy for hydatid disease 14 years prior. Physical examination and blood tests were unremarkable; however, chest computed tomography (C

INTRODUCTION: Infected non-union of the subtrochanteric femur is commonly attributed to bacterial infection and mechanical instability; however, rare etiologies may mimic this presentation and delay appropriate management. Hydatid disease involving bone is an uncommon manifestation and is often overlooked due to its non-specific clinical and radiological features. Reports of intraosseous hydatid cyst presenting as infected non-union are exceedingly rare, making this case clinically significant.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical, imaging, and pathological features of osseous cystic echinococcosis (CE) and osseous alveolar echinococcosis (AE) to enhance diagnostic accuracy and differential diagnosis capabilities.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 58 pathologically confirmed osseous echinococcosis cases was conducted, collecting demographic, clinical, imaging, and histopathological data.
RESULTS: Of 58 patients, 49 (84.5%) had osseous CE and 9 (15.5%) had osseous AE. Both types predominantly affected farmers/herdsmen. The spine was the most commonly affected site (CE: 70.4%, A

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection in humans caused by Echinococcusgranulosus and can lead to tissue cyst formation anywhere in the body. The most common sites for the development of parasitic cysts are the liver (75%) and lungs (15%). Skeletal involvement in echinococcal infection is relatively rare, occurring in only 1%-4% of cases. Few reports in the available medical literature describe rib hydatidosis, which clinically mimics benign or malignant cystic tumors.

BACKGROUND: Bone constitutes a rare site of involvement in hydatid disease, associated with a diagnostic challenge.
OBJECTIVE: The present study is an analysis of the clinicopathological features of osseous hydatidosis, emphasizing on its diverse appearance on radiologic imaging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients with histopathologically confirmed osseous hydatidosis were included.
RESULTS: The most involved site was spine ( n = 7), followed by pelvis (5), femur (4), and a single case, each in the rib, tibia, ulna, humerus, and talocalcaneal joint, respectively. The radiological di

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus species, most commonly affecting the liver and lungs. Skeletal involvement is rare, accounting for only 0.5%-4% of cases, with pelvic bone hydatidosis being exceptionally uncommon. Its indolent progression, nonspecific radiological features, and high recurrence rate make diagnosis and management particularly challenging.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal hydatid disease is uncommon and often mimics neoplastic lesions. Comparative evidence between bone and soft tissue involvement remains limited. We aimed to compare demographic characteristics, laboratory parameters and surgical outcomes between bone and soft tissue hydatid disease in an endemic region.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 64 consecutive patients who underwent surgery for histopathologically confirmed musculoskeletal hydatid disease between January 2010 and January 2024 (bone, n = 26; soft tissue, n = 38). Groups were compared regarding demographics

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection primarily caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Osseous hydatid disease is an uncommon manifestation and may present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges because of its insidious progression and tumor-like appearance. Femoral involvement is particularly rare. We report the case of a 44-year-old hypertensive woman who presented with chronic mechanical pain of the right hip evolving since 2019 and initially treated as lumbosciatica without improvement. MRI revealed an extensive intramedullary osteolytic lesion involving the right femoral diaphys

Osseous hydatidosis is a rare manifestation of echinococcosis, accounting for a small proportion of hydatid disease cases, with spinal involvement representing the most severe form due to the risk of neurological complications. We report the case of a 32-year-old woman living in a rural area who presented with progressive paraplegia secondary to spinal cord compression, leading to the diagnosis of isolated primary costovertebral hydatidosis. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extensive multivesicular lesion involving the thoracic spine with extradural spinal cord compression and dis

Brain involvement in hydatid disease accounts for 1-2% of all Echinococcus granulosus infections. Extradural localization remains exceptional, particularly when associated with intra-axial dissemination or infection. Here, we report the complete clinical course over 4 years of a pediatric patient who presented sequentially with a primary osteolytic extradural complicated hydatid cyst, likely via microscopic dural disruption or hematogenous seeding, and subsequently underwent customized low-cost acrylic cranioplasty using a 3D-printed mold. At final follow-up (4 years post-initial presentation,

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

Macrophage pyroptosis mediates vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis (AS). Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) exerts a protective role in preventing inflammation and AS. However, its molecular mechanisms of regulating the pyroptosis signaling pathway and inhibiting macrophage pyroptosis remain unexplored. The present study aimed to determine whether H2S mitigates macrophage pyroptosis by downregulating the pyroptosis signaling pathway and S‑sulfhydrating caspase‑1 under the stimulation of oxidized low‑density lipoprotein (ox‑LDL), a pro‑atherosclerotic factor. Macrophages derived from THP‑1 monocytes

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: Invasive home mechanical ventilation is used for patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency. This elaborate and technology-dependent ventilation is carried out via an artificial airway (tracheal cannula) to the trachea. Exact numbers about the incidence of home mechanical ventilation are not available. Patients with neuromuscular diseases represent a large portion of it.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS: Specific research questions are formulated and answered concerning the dimensions of medicine/nursing, economics, social, ethical and legal aspects. Beyond the technical a

PURPOSE: Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) released by NADPH oxidase and inflammation are associated with arterial hypertension and eye diseases associated with high blood pressure, including glaucoma, retinopathies (e.g., age-related macular degeneration), and choroidopathies affecting ocular function; however, the mechanisms underlying these adverse outcomes remain undefined. The present study was designed to highlight the importance of oxidative stress in severe hypertension-related eye damage.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats (n = 7, unless otherwise specified for specific experiments) wer

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l
