Integrated histological, biochemical and molecular analysis of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) responses to acute hypoxic stress.

Hypoxia critically impacts grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) aquaculture, causing oxidative damage, mortality and economic losses. This study revealed the physiological and genetic response mechanisms of grass carp under hypoxic stress by integrating histology, biochemistry and miRNA-mRNA network analysis. The experimental individuals were confined in sealed containers with pre-aerated water, allowing dissolved oxygen (DO) to decline naturally, and three groups were established: Normoxia (DO: 7.99 ± 0.43 mg∙L-1; control), Hypoxia (DO: 0.88 ± 0.16 mg∙L-1; upward swimming and gulping), and As

A Tale of Two Cerebral Palsies.

BACKGROUND: There is limited understanding of cerebral palsy (CP) in low-middle-income countries (LMICs). This retrospective cross-sectional study aims to describe and compare the phenotype, severity and etiologic profile of children with CP born either in a LMIC or high-income country (HIC) assessed in a single setting. METHODS: Data from consecutive children with CP initially assessed by a single neurologist over a 5-year interval (2020-2024 inclusive) were extracted from hospital records. Children were classified into one of two groups based on location at birth (HIC or LMIC). Pearson chi-

Impact of resuscitation-trained healthcare workforce availability on neonatal asphyxia mortality: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Intrapartum events cause approximately 900,000 neonatal deaths annually worldwide. This study investigated whether the number of healthcare providers trained in resuscitation at the municipal level is associated with decreased neonatal mortality due to perinatal asphyxia. METHODS: This population-based study analyzed neonatal deaths with birth weight ≥1500 g without congenital anomalies in São Paulo State, Brazil (2011-2020). Deaths were classified as asphyxia-associated when ICD-10 codes indicating intrauterine hypoxia, birth asphyxia, or neonatal meconium aspiration appeared on

Diagnostic pitfalls and forensic implications of hyperactive delirium with severe agitation: an Italian case series.

Hyperactive Delirium with Severe Agitation (HDSA) is characterized by disorientation and aggressive behavior, constituting an acute, life-threatening medical emergency that requires prompt intervention. It is frequently associated with substance use. In prehospital settings, management often involves physical restraint, force, or pharmacological sedation; however, the diagnostic criteria and medico-legal implications of HDSA remain insufficiently defined. We retrospectively analyzed seven fatal cases exhibiting HDSA presentations, as defined by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACE

Advancing understanding of the mechanisms of autism spectrum disorder through perinatal risk factors.

Advances in elucidating the genetic etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have significantly enhanced our understanding of its neurodevelopmental underpinnings. However, given the considerable heterogeneity and complexity of ASD, environmental factors also play a critical role in affecting the fetus directly or interacting with genetic susceptibilities to contribute to ASD-related developmental impairments. Epidemiological studies indicate that children exposed to perinatal complications, such as gestational diabetes, birth asphyxia, and preeclampsia, have a higher likelihood of being dia

Acute Upper Airway Obstruction Due to Neck Hematoma After Cervical Liposuction.

Liposuction, also known as suction lipectomy, is an aesthetic procedure that removes fat from the submandibular, submental, chin, and neck regions. Hematomas are complications caused by ruptured blood vessels during the insertion of the cannula, which is more common in patients who use anticoagulant or anti-inflammatory medications before surgery. It could potentially be life-threatening if left untreated due to fatal airway obstruction and respiratory distress. Patients present with dysphagia, asphyxia, dysphonia, and a lot of discomfort. Immediate surgical intervention and pain control are n

Contraction frequency and acidemia at birth: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Consensus is lacking regarding the upper limit for a safe contraction frequency during labor. We aimed to assess the association between different contraction frequencies and acidemia at birth, and whether an association was affected by oxytocin augmentation, concomitant cardiotocography (CTG) classification, and stage of labor. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a case-control study based on CTG traces from births in southern Sweden during 2012-2017. Cases (N = 364) had umbilical artery pH <7.1 if born by first-stage cesarean section and pH <7.05 if born vaginally or by second-stage

Decline in rescue breathing and its impact on outcomes in pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest due to drowning: a nationwide study, 2012-2023.

BACKGROUND: Rescue breathing is considered essential in pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) due to drowning, a type of asphyxial arrest where hypoxia precedes circulatory collapse. However, the increasing promotion of compression-only CPR (CO-CPR) may have contributed to changes in bystander CPR practices, including a decline in rescue-breathing CPR (RB-CPR). Whether such temporal changes have influenced outcomes in pediatric drowning OHCA remains unclear. METHODS: We analyzed nationwide data from the All-Japan Utstein Registry (2012-2023), including pediatric OHCA patients (≤17 y

Neuroprotective effects of Interleukin-1 receptor antagonism after cardiac arrest: an experimental rat study.

This study aimed to investigate the histopathological and biochemical neuroprotective effects of IL-1 receptor antagonist (anakinra) administration in an asphyxia-induced cardiac arrest model. A total of 24 Wistar albino rats were randomized into three groups: control, sham (cardiac arrest + saline), and anakinra (cardiac arrest + 50 mg/kg anakinra). Brain tissues were evaluated using a six-parameter semi-quantitative histopathological scoring system, and the composite damage score (CDS) was calculated (0-12). Levels of antioxidant and oxidative markers SOD, CAT, GSH, and MDA were analyzed spe

Evolutionary digital twin framework for optimal aminoglycoside dosing in neonates with suspected sepsis.

Aminoglycoside dosing in suspected neonatal sepsis remains difficult due to highly variable pharmacokinetics driven by marked physiological diversity, from extremely preterm to term neonates, and further complicated by acute kidney injury, perinatal asphyxia, and concomitant interventions. We developed multiscale medical digital twins combining a physiologically-based pharmacokinetic model with an eco-evolutionary pharmacodynamic module capturing drug-modulated bacterial growth and resistance. Glomerular filtration rate is continuously updated using a long short-term memory neural network trai

Prevalence of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy and Multiorgan Dysfunction in Late Preterm and Term Infants Receiving Resuscitation Beyond Initial Steps at Birth.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Perinatal asphyxia is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, frequently resulting in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and multiorgan dysfunction (MOD). During asphyxia, the "diving reflex" preferentially redistributes blood flow to vital organs, predisposing other organ systems to ischemic injury. Data on the burden and pattern of MOD among resuscitated late preterm and term neonates remain limited. The primary objective of this study was to determine the frequency and severity of HIE in late preterm and term neonates requiring resuscitation beyond
