Predictors of endoscopic management failure in benign non-caustic esophageal strictures: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Benign Non-caustic Esophageal Strictures (BNES) often require repeated endoscopic dilations, yet a substantial proportion of patients remain refractory and ultimately require esophagectomy. Identifying predictors of endoscopic failure is essential for risk stratification and timely referral to alternative therapies. This study aimed to identify factors associated with endoscopic treatment failure leading to esophagectomy in patients with BNES. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 51 patients with BNES treated at a single tertiary center from January 2004 to March 2026

Association of "Ippatsu-Gei," a Brief Psychosocial Interaction, with Spontaneous Activity and Adverse Events in Home-Visit Dysphagia Rehabilitation: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Direct and indirect training are well established in dysphagia rehabilitation, but the role of brief psychosocial interactions in home-based care remains unclear. This retrospective cohort study examined whether provider-based exposure to "Ippatsu-gei" was associated with spontaneous activity and adverse events during home-visit dysphagia rehabilitation. Methods: Clinical records were reviewed for patients who received at least one session between January and June 2019. Exposure was defined as care from dentists who routinely incorporated Ippatsu-gei into patient communi

Magnesium-associated persimmon polysaccharide modulates the structure, water mobility, and texture of kudzu starch gels.

This study evaluated how a magnesium-associated persimmon polysaccharide preparation (PP-Mg) affected kudzu starch (KS) gels. Persimmon polysaccharide (PP) and MgCl2 were combined at mass ratios of 4:1, 4:2, and 4:3. PP-Mg 4:2 had the highest geometric mean apparent viscosity across the shear-rate sweep and the highest viscoelastic moduli within the common strain interval. It also ranked first in a four-criterion comparison. This preparation was then added at 0.8% or 2.0% (w/v) to dispersions containing 15%, 20%, or 25% (w/v) KS before gelatinization. The six gels were compared using utensil t

Prediction of swallowing improvement after tracheal reconstruction in patients receiving LFES-containing rehabilitation: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a clinically important complication after tracheal reconstruction. Low-frequency electrical stimulation (LFES) supports postoperative swallowing rehabilitation, yet swallowing outcomes vary substantially among patients. We aimed to identify prognostic factors associated with observed swallowing improvement and to develop an internally validated clinical prediction model among patients receiving LFES-containing rehabilitation after tracheal reconstruction. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 200 patients with postoperative dysphagia who received LFES-cont

Cost Effectiveness Analysis of the Presto-Trial: A Three-Armed RCT Evaluating Prophylactic Swallowing Exercises in Head and Neck Cancer Patients During (Chemo)radio Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Research on oropharyngeal head and neck cancer (HNC) patients indicates that prophylactic swallowing exercises (PSE) during (C)RT can positively affect muscle strength, swallowing function and quality of life (QOL). Primary analyses of the PRESTO-trial showed higher adherence rates for PSE when exercising daily with a speech-language pathologist (SLP), compared to self-guided exercises with either an exercise diary or a digital application. Additionally, higher adherence rates were related to greater improvements in swallowing function and QOL. However, given limited healthcare res

Thrombosed mycotic aneurysm of the cervical internal carotid artery mimicking a parapharyngeal abscess in a child: a case report of multimodal imaging diagnosis.

A parapharyngeal abscess, although relatively rare, is a potentially life-threatening deep neck space infection in the pediatric population that carries a risk of serious complications. Mycotic pseudoaneurysm of the cervical internal carotid artery (ICA) is a rare vascular complication in children that can lead to catastrophic hemorrhage if misdiagnosed and attempted for surgical incision. We report a 7-year-old malnourished boy presenting with fever, dysphagia, and neck stiffness. Suboptimal contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) suggested a left parapharyngeal abscess, and surgical drain
