Evaluating imputation methods for longitudinal clinical trajectories: Toxicities in head and neck cancer treatment.

PURPOSE: Longitudinally collected medical data is often afflicted by missingness, making methods mitigating missingness valuable. This study evaluated nine imputation methods for longitudinal data, using toxicity scores measured at multiple timepoints resulting from head and neck cancer treatment with radiotherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: For four toxicities (xerostomia, dysphagia, taste alteration, and sticky saliva), toxicity scores at 16 timepoints (1 prior, 7 during, and 8 after treatment) were collected, resulting in 1442 patients with on average ∼11.6 available timepoints. Imputation met

[Swallowing and Feeding Problems in Neonatal Units - Analysis of a Speech-Language Pathology Service].

BACKGROUND: Preterm and sick neonates are at increased risk for swallowing and feeding problems. In Germany, structural standards for speech-language pathology (SLP) services in neonatal care are lacking, as are validated assessment tools for this context. The aim of this study was to systematically describe feeding problems using clinically feasible instruments. METHODS: In a prospective observational study, a SLP service was implemented in neonatal units at a German university hospital. Data were analyzed from infants referred due to feeding difficulties. Nutritional status was assessed usi

Primary Epstein-Barr virus-negative lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx mimicking nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a case report.

Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) of the larynx is exceptionally rare and can closely mimic undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. A 78-year-old man presented with progressive dysphonia and dysphagia. Endoscopy and computed tomography showed a supraglottic lesion with bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy (cT2N2M0). Biopsy demonstrated poorly differentiated non-keratinizing carcinoma with dense lymphoid stroma and a Schmincke-type pattern. Tumor cells were positive for p40, p63, and pancytokeratins; Epstein-Barr virus testing was negative. After exclusion of a nasopharyngeal primary, th

Endoscopic accessibility and conduit passage after retrosternal vs. posterior mediastinal gastric conduit reconstruction following McKeown esophagectomy: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The optimal route for gastric-conduit reconstruction after McKeown esophagectomy remains uncertain. Previous comparisons have focused primarily on anastomotic leakage and pulmonary morbidity, whereas postoperative endoscopic accessibility and clinically evident conduit-passage disturbance have been less well characterized. We compared retrosternal (RS) and posterior mediastinal (PM) reconstruction, focusing on these functional outcomes. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort included 37 patients treated by the same surgical team between March 2025 and April 2026 (RS, n=1

Accidental Bottle Cap Ingestion in an Adult in a Resource-Limited Setting: A Case Report.

Foreign body ingestion in adults may become life-threatening depending on the site of impaction and the nature of the object. We report a 53-year-old man who accidentally ingested a bottle top while opening a pressurized reused beverage bottle with his teeth. He presented with drooling of saliva, dysphagia, throat pain, and foreign body sensation. Plain radiographs failed to identify the radiolucent foreign body but excluded airway involvement. Direct laryngoscopy identified the foreign body impacted at the cricopharyngeal opening, and successful removal was achieved using Magill forceps under

Primary thyroid hydatid cyst: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic infection caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus, with the liver and lungs being the most frequently involved organs. Thyroid gland involvement is exceptionally rare, accounting for approximately 1% of all human hydatid cases and posing significant diagnostic challenges, particularly in endemic regions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old woman from a rural area presented with a 5-year history of a slowly enlarging anterior neck mass, with recent progression to dysphagia and dysphonia. She reported regular consumption of raw v

Systemic Sclerosis Presenting With Long-Standing Peripheral Neuropathy and Delayed Multisystem Manifestations: A Case Report.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune connective tissue disorder characterized by immune dysregulation, microvascular injury, and progressive fibrosis involving the skin and internal organs. Although Raynaud phenomenon and cutaneous sclerosis are the hallmark manifestations, atypical presentations may significantly delay diagnosis. Peripheral neuropathy is an uncommon neurological manifestation and rarely precedes the diagnosis of SSc by several years. We report the case of a 62-year-old female who presented with a 20-year history of progressive distal paresthesia involving both upper

The Clinical and Diagnostic Spectrum of Esophagitis Dissecans Superficialis: A Comprehensive Retrospective Case Series and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Esophagitis dissecans superficialis (EDS), also known as sloughing esophagitis, is a rare and likely underdiagnosed desquamative disorder characterized by the exfoliation of large fragments of the esophageal squamous epithelium. Despite its dramatic endoscopic appearance, it is frequently misidentified as candidal or corrosive esophagitis. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the clinical spectrum, diagnostic hallmarks, and therapeutic outcomes of EDS through a Moroccan retrospective case series and a literature review. METHODS: We conducted a retrospecti

Frailty and abdominal wall hernias: a Mendelian randomization and retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Frailty, measured by frailty index (FI), involves a decline in the function of multiple physiological systems. It is known that the dysfunction of abdominal wall is related to the occurrence of abdominal wall hernias. In this research, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis to explore the causal relationship between frailty and abdominal wall hernias and did a retrospective study to evaluate the association between preoperative frailty and postoperative complications following hiatal hernia repair. METHODS: Summary data of FI, hiatal hernia, femoral hernia, i

Low-Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation with Sensory Arousal Nursing for Post-Stroke Dysphagia.

Post-stroke dysphagia can compromise airway protection, nutrition, and functional recovery. This article describes a clinical protocol combining low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) with a structured sensory arousal nursing package for patients with acute ischemic stroke and dysphagia accompanied by feeding-related upper-limb dysfunction. Dysphagia is the primary treatment focus; upper-limb activities address associated limitations in self-feeding. The protocol integrates screening, stimulation safety review, motor-threshold determination, contralesional swallowing

Can Verbal Cues Enhance Respiratory-Swallow Coordination for Individuals Following Head and Neck Cancer?

Atypical respiratory-swallow coordination is associated with increased aspiration risk and swallow inefficiency. While verbal cueing has been shown to influence respiratory-swallow coordination in people with Parkinson's disease, its effect in individuals following head and neck cancer remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the effect of verbal cuing on respiratory-swallow coordination in this population. A prospective, with-in subjects' design was employed. Respiratory Inductance Plethysmography, nasal airflow and submental electromyograms were used to capture respiratory-swallow patter

Respiratory-swallowing Measures and the Impact of Bolus Hold in Individuals with Parkinson's Disease.

Respiratory and swallowing impairments are common in Parkinson's disease (PD), potentially disrupting respiratory-swallow coordination. This study aimed 1) to examine respiratory-swallowing phase patterns and respiratory cessation duration in individuals with PD across varying bolus consistencies and swallow tasks, and 2) to investigate the influence of the 'bolus hold' verbal cue on these measures. Twenty individuals with PD (mean age = 71.7 years, 6 female) completed 14 swallow trials with varying bolus consistencies (thin, nectar, honey, pudding, solid) and tasks (5mL, 20mL) with each trial

[Atlantoaxial luxation in a neonatal Warmblood foal].

Atlantoaxial luxation represents a rare but clinically relevant differential diagnosis in neonatal foals presenting with neurological abnormalities or dysphagia. This case report describes a newborn filly without apparent ataxia, but presenting with a stiff head-neck posture and milky nasal discharge. Clinical examination revealed a compromised general condition and abnormal swelling in the region of the fossa retromandibularis. Radiographic examination confirmed the diagnosis of an atlantoaxial luxation. Due to the poor prognosis the foal was euthanized. This case highlights the diagnostic ap
