Prevotella-dominated dysbiosis and predicted suppression of sulfur biosynthesis pathways associated with halitosis in Korean adults.

Halitosis affects a substantial proportion of adults worldwide, yet the compositional and functional basis of the oral microbiome in halitosis remains incompletely understood, particularly in East Asian populations. We performed 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of oral gargle samples from 45 individuals with halitosis and 45 healthy controls in South Korea, generating approximately 4,600 amplicon sequence variants. Beta diversity analysis revealed significant community-level separation (PERMANOVA, P = 0.001) and an elevated Firmicutes/Bacteroidota ratio in halitosis, although alpha diversity

Multifactorial assessment of halitosis in systemically and orally healthy orthodontic patients: airway dimensions, breathing pattern, and comparison with a portable breath analyzer.

Halitosis is a multifactorial condition influenced by airway-related factors and breathing patterns. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between airway dimensions, craniofacial morphology, and breathing type with halitosis in orthodontic patients. In addition, the agreement between the portable breath analyzer and the organoleptic method, as well as the role of self-reported and physiological halitosis, was investigated. This cross-sectional study included 113 systemically and orally healthy orthodontic patients. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were used to assess the sagittal and

Making periodontal risk visible: the role of artificial intelligence in recall adherence.

Supportive periodontal care is essential for maintaining periodontal stability after active therapy, yet adherence to periodontal maintenance remains difficult. Once bleeding, halitosis or other presenting concerns improve, some patients may interpret the disease as resolved and the maintenance visit as "just a clean." This Perspective uses the intention-behaviour gap to examine behavioural, financial and health-literacy barriers to continued supportive care. It then considers a narrower, testable hypothesis: artificial intelligence (AI) might assist clinicians in organising clinician-verified

Uncertainty-Aware Deep Ensembles for Robust and Reliable Chemical Sensor Arrays.

Selective detection of sulfur-containing gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (CH3SH), and dimethyl sulfide ((CH3)2S) is important for halitosis-related breath and environmental monitoring. However, conventional metal-oxide chemiresistive sensors show high cross-reactivity toward these chemically similar species, which limits their practical selectivity. To address this, we present a deep-ensemble-assisted electronic nose based on catalytic metal nanoparticles-decorated metal oxide nanofiber arrays. A 15-channel multi-sensor array was fabricated by anchoring diverse metal cat

Microbial volatile organic compounds and olfactory receptors in wound malodor.

Wound odor is a common symptom in patients with chronic wounds. Malodorous wounds can result in embarrassment, anxiety, and, therefore, in social isolation of the patient. Current treatment options are limited and focused on masking the odor. Current approaches to wound odor management have notable limitations and fail to adequately address existing therapeutic needs. Wound odor is multifactorial, with a major contribution from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by microorganisms and necrotic tissue. Several VOCs have been identified as key drivers of malodor, such as short-chain fatty

Evaluation of Factors Associated with Post-Tonsillectomy Bleeding in Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage is one of the most common and potentially life-threatening complications of tonsillectomy in adults and may result in readmission or reoperation. Adults are known to have a higher bleeding risk compared with children due to increased inflammation, comorbid factors, and surgical complexity. Identification of factors associated with postoperative bleeding is essential for optimizing surgical technique, postoperative care, and patient counseling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included adult patients (≥18 years) who underw

The effects of probiotics intervention on oral health outcomes: a comprehensive umbrella review of meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: Probiotics are proposed adjuncts for oral health, but findings from meta-analyses are inconsistent. We conducted an umbrella review of meta-analyses to synthesize evidence on probiotics' effects on cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococus (S.) mutans and Lactobacillus, halitosis (volatile sulfur compounds and organoleptic scores), and caries progression. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched up to October 2025 for meta-analyses of clinical trials investigating the effect of probiotics on oral health outcomes. Two reviewers screened studies, extracted d

Relationship Between Halitosis and Mouth Breathing Among Pediatric Population: Exploring the Contributing Factors.

Non‑hematopoietic stromal cells are essential regulators of hematopoiesis; however, their contribution to leukemogenesis and immune dysfunction remains poorly defined. Here, we identified fibroblast‑derived fibroblast growth factor 18 (FGF18) as a novel stromal cytokine that reprograms leukemia-immune interactions. Single-cell RNA sequencing of the bone marrow (BM) niche during acute myeloid leukemia (AML) revealed the upregulation of Fgf18 in stromal fibroblasts. Administration of recombinant FGF18 accelerated AML progression, whereas fibroblast-specific Fgf18 depletion markedly delayed disea

From dysbiotic gut to malodorous mouth: targeting microbial metabolism for gastrointestinal type halitosis.

This article reviews the microbiological mechanisms of halitosis, the oral-gut axis, the role of the gut microbiome, related metabolic pathways, and their associations with gastrointestinal diseases, and explores intervention strategies based on microbial regulation. Halitosis is primarily caused by volatile sulfur compounds produced by oral microorganisms, especially gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, and volatile organic compounds in most extraoral etiologies. Studies have found that intestinal microbial dysregulation can affect the composition of oral flora through the oral-gut axis and aggr

The relationship of oral malodor to gingivitis: cross-sectional epidemiology and longitudinal randomized clinical trial evidence.

This research assessed the relationship between oral malodor, measured by halimetry and organoleptic grading, and gingivitis as measured by number of gingival bleeding sites (GBS). Two complementary clinical studies were examined. The first was a cross-sectional trial evaluating the association between volatile sulfur compounds measured by halimetry and organoleptic scores (0-5 scale). The second study was a randomized, 2-treatment, parallel group trial evaluating oral malodor using a 1-9 hedonic scale between a control group and an oral hygiene regimen over 8 d. In both trials, GBS were deriv
