Cysticercus bovis in slaughtered cattle in upper Egypt: implications for food safety.

BACKGROUND: Bovine cysticercosis is regarded as an essential food safety concern, causing human taeniasis, as well as a significant economic worry, as infected carcasses are condemned, frozen, and downgraded. It is caused by Cysticercus bovis (C. bovis), which is the larval stage of Taenia saginata that inhabits the small intestine of man. In the two-host life cycle, humans are the definitive hosts, and cattle are the intermediate hosts. Therefore, the current research aims to study the prevalence of C. bovis in slaughtered cattle in Aswan province, Upper Egypt, by using both macroscopic and m

Neuroendoscopic management of intraventricular neurocysticercosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis is parasitic infection responsible for intraventricular cysts and consequent obstructive hydrocephalus. While the cysts are sometimes treated endoscopically, the efficacy and safety of neuroendoscopic management for intraventricular neurocysticercosis (IVNCC) remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate management outcomes of endoscopic IVNCC. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a search of MEDLINE, Embase, and Lilacs databases was performed (inception to September 10, 2024), focusing on the neuroendoscopic managem

Disseminated cysticercosis in a non-endemic area of Europe: diagnostic challenges and successful management of an unusual parasitic infection.

Cysticercosis caused by the larval forms of Taenia solium is observed sporadically in humans from nonendemic areas and is challenging to diagnose. We report an extraordinary case of 81-year-old woman from a rural region of Poland with worsening neurological symptoms suspected of brain malignancy. Imaging and serological tests confirmed disseminated cysticercosis with multiple space-occupying lesions located in the brain, soft tissues, and liver. Systemic cysticercosis in a white woman without a history of international travel is an exceptional clinical finding. Treatment with albendazole and c

Intraventricular Neurocysticercosis: An atypical presentation of a little-known and poorly understood disease - A case report.

Neurocysticercosis (NC) is defined as an infection of the central nervous system by the larvae of Taenia solium. Intraventricular involvement occurs in approximately 7-30 % of cases, with the fourth ventricle being the most frequently affected site. The main complication associated with this form is the development of hydrocephalus, and the optimal therapeutic approach remains under debate. This case report describes a patient with intraventricular NC who achieved a successful outcome with medical management. The case is notable for several uncommon features, including cyst migration, calcific

Development of an enzyme immunoassay employing low molecular weight recombinant Ag1 and Ag1V1 proteins of cystic fluid for the serodiagnosis of porcine cysticercosis.

Taenia solium cysticercosis is one of the neglected tropical diseases with public health importance especially in developing countries across the globe. Pigs serve as the intermediate host in the life cycle of T.solium and acts as a major source of infection to humans. Detecting the infection in pigs is extremely important in controlling the transmission in humans. In this study, the two low molecular weight antigens (Ag1 and Ag1V1) of T. solium cysticerci were cloned, sequenced and analyzed. After sequence confirmation, the purified PCR products were ligated into pET 32b expression vector and

Lack of knowledge of stakeholders in the pork value chain: Considerations for transmission and control of Taenia solium and Toxoplasma gondii in Burundi.

Taenia solium and Toxoplasma gondii are important foodborne zoonotic parasites that cause substantial health and economic impacts worldwide. In Burundi, there was a lack of data on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of stakeholders in the pork value chain. To fill this gap, this study aimed to assess the knowledge of stakeholders in the pork value chain regarding T. solium and T. gondii infections and identify health-seeking routes and factors contributing to parasitic transmissions. A mixed methods study was conducted in Bujumbura city, Kayanza, and Ngozi provinces from January 10 to Apr

Neurocysticercosis: current diagnostic and treatment paradigms.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neurocysticercosis, the infestation of the human central nervous system by Taenia solium cysts, accounts for a significant burden of neurological disorders in endemic regions. It is a neglected tropical disease and, hence, often overlooked. However, its importance is underscored by the high burden of epilepsy in endemic regions and many imported cases in nonendemic areas. Given recent epidemiological shifts and advances in diagnosis and treatment, a new focus on neurocysticercosis is required. RECENT FINDINGS: While South & Central America remain endemic, sub-Saharan Africa

Exosomal tpi-miR-10a-5p from T. pisiformis cysticerci regulates the expression of inflammatory factors in rabbits by targeting MAP3K7.

Taenia pisiformis (T. pisiformis) cysticerci, belonging to Taeniidae, attaches to the wall of the mesentery and omentum of rabbits, causing cysticercosis pisiformis that can seriously affect the healthy development of the rabbit breeding industry. Helminths can produce exosomes containing proteins and RNAs. In our previous study, tpi-miR-10a-5p was found to be highly enriched in the exosomes from T. pisiformis cysticerci. In this study, we report that tpi-miR-10a-5p is significantly up-regulated in the blood and peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLCs) of T. pisiformis-infected rabbits. Furthermor
