To be wounded is to be read: disability and the structures of nonviolent conflict from Shakespeare to the Victorians.

This article proposes nonviolent conflict as a conceptual framework for examining struggles organised through the social interpretation and mediation of embodied vulnerability rather than through direct physical force. Bringing disability studies into conversation with theories of vulnerability, epistemic injustice, pain, and narrative ethics, it asks how wounded or impaired bodies become sites of contested authority, credibility, care, access, and representation. Through theoretically informed comparative close readings of Titus Andronicus, King Lear, A Christmas Carol, and Jane Eyre, the art

METHODS: A cross-sectional population-based sample (Study on the Experiences of Adolescents in Sport Contexts in Quebec - ÉVAQ) nested within the representative Quebec Health Survey of High School Students (QHSHSS) was employed. Between November 2022 and June 2023, students from 485 high schools were recruited for the ÉVA

We searched for relevant articles in Scopus, Web of Science, and Academic Search Premier up to March 2025 and screened them using predefined criteria. The study quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist. A random-effects model was used for meta

CD is characterised by persistent dissocial, aggressive, and defiant behaviors that defy age-appropriate expectations. This is the case of a 15-year-old male adoptee referred to Tier 3 Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) for severe aggression, impulsivity, and domestic violence. The patient exhibited coercive control toward his mother, physical violence involving weapons, and property damage, necessitating police involvement and risking family placement breakdown

Efficacy of Technology-Augmented Behavioral Counseling for Risky Firearm Behaviors: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Firearm violence is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality for US adolescents and emerging adults (A/EAs). Health care visits are an important opportunity to provide preventive counseling addressing risky firearm behaviors (RFBs), which increase fatal and nonfatal firearm injury risk, as well as associated negative health and social outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of a technology-augmented behavioral counseling intervention addressing RFBs among A/EAs seeking emergency department (ED) treatment. Associations between maternal age at first birth and parenting behaviour among migrant and displaced mothers on the Thailand-Myanmar border.

BACKGROUND: Early parenthood is an established risk factor for poor maternal and child outcomes. Research on the association between maternal age at first birth and parenting behaviour remains limited in displacement contexts in low- and middle-income countries, despite the high prevalence of adolescent and young motherhood in these settings. OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations between maternal age at first birth and three domains of parenting behaviour (positive parenting, physical maltreatment, and emotional maltreatment) among migrant and displaced mothers from Myanmar. Adverse Childhood Experiences and HIV Prevalence Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Rural South Africa: The Role of Household and Community Violence.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Sub-Saharan Africa, who also face a high burden of HIV. While prior research has focused on behavioural pathways linking ACEs and HIV, less attention has been given to the broader spectrum of adversities themselves, particularly household and community violence. This study examined the association between cumulative and individual ACEs and HIV prevalence among AGYW in rural South Africa. This cross-sectional study analysed data from the 2017 follow-up visit of the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPT

Post-Traumatic Growth and Depreciation Among Women Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence: The Predictive Role of Core Beliefs and Resilience.

Traumatic experiences can lead to negative changes in an individual's evaluations of themselves, others, and the world by disrupting their belief systems. The purpose of this study is to examine post-traumatic depreciation (PTD) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) in women exposed to physical violence by an intimate partner, as well as the psychological factors potentially associated with these variables. The research was conducted with 72 female participants aged 19 to 63 reached through purposeful sampling. Findings indicated that psychological resilience has a strong protective effect on PTD, w

Partner-inflicted brain injury may cognitively age survivors by over a decade.

More than a third of women in the United States are estimated to experience abuse from an intimate partner, in which blows to the head, strangulation, and therefore brain injuries are common. Among 207 survivors of such physical violence, two-thirds reported a partner-inflicted brain injury. These women performed substantially worse than the general population across most cognitive measures, including memory and reaction time. Cognitive performance declined as injury count increased. Translated into cognitive age, survivors with the most partner-inflicted brain injuries performed over two deca

Understanding Violence Toward Canadian Nurses From Patients' Family and Visitors as a Potentially Psychologically Traumatic Event.

AIM: In this study, we explore qualitatively the types and extent of violence perpetrated against Canadian nurses. BACKGROUND: With the growing shortage of professional nurses globally, prioritizing the safety and well-being of nurses is essential. Workplace violence is a critical factor that may aggravate exposure to potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs) and negatively affect nurses' mental health and well-being. Research has found that patients' family members and other visitors are the second highest perpetrators of health care violence against nurses. METHOD: Using a groun

What Is the Impact of Coercive Control on Children Exposed to Domestic Violence?

Moving beyond traditional frameworks focused on physical violence, the article adopts a comprehensive definition of coercive control as encompassing psychological abuse, isolation, stalking, and the systematic denial of autonomy, and argues that its effects on children are distinct and deeply harmful, often persisting long after direct exposure ends. Three key mechanisms of harm are identified: (1) credible threats, which compel children and mothers to constantly modify their behavior to avoid punishment, creating a chronically stressful environment akin to "walking on eggshells"; (2) hypervig

Gender-Specific Effects of Different Forms of Intimate Partner Violence on Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

There is an ongoing debate about gender differences in the direction, magnitude, forms, and consequences of intimate partner violence. The findings of studies reporting gender symmetry in intimate partner violence (IPV) are challenged on the basis that they do not consider such forms of IPV as coercive control and physical violence. The present study is from a large-scale ongoing birth cohort study. At 21 years of age, respondents completed a questionnaire assessing their social and economic circumstances, experiences of IPV, and their mental health. At 30 years of age, respondents completed t
