Workplace Violence and Turnover Intention Among Rural General Practitioners in China's National Compulsory Services Program: The Mediating Role of Psychosocial Factors.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence (WPV) against general practitioners (GPs) is a global issue, especially in rural regions. The National Compulsory Services Program (NCSP) was launched to address the primary care shortage in China. This study examines WPV prevalence and associated factors among NCSP GPs, its impact on turnover intention, and the mediating role of psychosocial factors. METHODS: 3,615 GPs from township health centers (THCs) across nine provinces were recruited between 2021 and 2022. Logistic regression identified socio-demographic and occupational characteristics associated with W

Post-Traumatic Growth and Depreciation Among Women Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence: The Predictive Role of Core Beliefs and Resilience.

Traumatic experiences can lead to negative changes in an individual's evaluations of themselves, others, and the world by disrupting their belief systems. The purpose of this study is to examine post-traumatic depreciation (PTD) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) in women exposed to physical violence by an intimate partner, as well as the psychological factors potentially associated with these variables. The research was conducted with 72 female participants aged 19 to 63 reached through purposeful sampling. Findings indicated that psychological resilience has a strong protective effect on PTD, w

Partner-inflicted brain injury may cognitively age survivors by over a decade.

More than a third of women in the United States are estimated to experience abuse from an intimate partner, in which blows to the head, strangulation, and therefore brain injuries are common. Among 207 survivors of such physical violence, two-thirds reported a partner-inflicted brain injury. These women performed substantially worse than the general population across most cognitive measures, including memory and reaction time. Cognitive performance declined as injury count increased. Translated into cognitive age, survivors with the most partner-inflicted brain injuries performed over two deca

Understanding Violence Toward Canadian Nurses From Patients' Family and Visitors as a Potentially Psychologically Traumatic Event.

AIM: In this study, we explore qualitatively the types and extent of violence perpetrated against Canadian nurses. BACKGROUND: With the growing shortage of professional nurses globally, prioritizing the safety and well-being of nurses is essential. Workplace violence is a critical factor that may aggravate exposure to potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs) and negatively affect nurses' mental health and well-being. Research has found that patients' family members and other visitors are the second highest perpetrators of health care violence against nurses. METHOD: Using a groun

What Is the Impact of Coercive Control on Children Exposed to Domestic Violence?

Moving beyond traditional frameworks focused on physical violence, the article adopts a comprehensive definition of coercive control as encompassing psychological abuse, isolation, stalking, and the systematic denial of autonomy, and argues that its effects on children are distinct and deeply harmful, often persisting long after direct exposure ends. Three key mechanisms of harm are identified: (1) credible threats, which compel children and mothers to constantly modify their behavior to avoid punishment, creating a chronically stressful environment akin to "walking on eggshells"; (2) hypervig

Gender-Specific Effects of Different Forms of Intimate Partner Violence on Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

There is an ongoing debate about gender differences in the direction, magnitude, forms, and consequences of intimate partner violence. The findings of studies reporting gender symmetry in intimate partner violence (IPV) are challenged on the basis that they do not consider such forms of IPV as coercive control and physical violence. The present study is from a large-scale ongoing birth cohort study. At 21 years of age, respondents completed a questionnaire assessing their social and economic circumstances, experiences of IPV, and their mental health. At 30 years of age, respondents completed t

Epidemiology of violence and suicide risk in Senegal: A nationwide survey in 2023.

Assessing violence and suicide risk at the population level is essential to inform public health policies and guide prevention efforts for mental health. In Senegal, as in much of sub-Saharan Africa, such data remain scarce. This study aims to fill that gap by estimating the prevalence of violence and suicide risk, and identifying associated factors in the Senegalese population. This nationwide, observational, cross-sectional, population-based analytical survey received ethical approval from Senegal's National Ethics Committee for Health Research. Conducted between July and August 2023, it cov

Intimate partner violence experience, support seeking and coping strategies among pregnant women in Southwestern Uganda.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy remains a global health challenge. This study aimed to explore pregnant women's experiences of IPV, support seeking, and coping strategies in Southwestern Uganda. Pregnant women who had experienced IPV during pregnancy were purposively selected and completed in-depth interviews, with data saturation reached after 25 participants. Guided by the feminist theory, data were analyzed deductively and inductively using thematic analysis. Participating pregnant women were exposed to physical violence (e.g., the gravid abdomen being stepped on), psycholo

Violence and abuse towards staff by patients and the public in general practice since COVID-19: findings from an online survey.

BACKGROUND: Professionals in general practice (family medicine) experience more violence and abuse by patients and the public than in other healthcare settings. There is limited research on such experiences among non-clinical staff, and no direct comparisons between staff groups in general practice. AIM: To explore the following: the extent of violence and abuse from patients or the public towards general practice staff between 2020 and 2023; staff correlates and environmental correlates for violence and abuse; and potential impacts of violence and abuse regarding staff feeling of safety and

Longitudinal assessment of changes in hair cortisol levels and associations with violence, poor mental health and harmful substance use among female sex workers in Nairobi, Kenya.

Female sex workers (FSWs) in sub-Saharan Africa commonly experience violence, mental health problems, and harmful substance use. Stressful life events can harm the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, serving as a pathway to increased poor health, including HIV susceptibility through cortisol levels. In this paper, we examine changes in hair cortisol concentration (HCC) levels and associations with experiences of violence, mental health problems and harmful substance use among FSWs in Nairobi, Kenya. We used baseline and endline data from the Maisha Fiti study of FSWs

When economic hardship meets chronic parental distress: Inequalities in harsh discipline toward children in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Empirical evidence has well-established that parental psychological distress is associated with an increased risk of using physical violence and verbal aggression against children. However, less is known about the associations between long-term parental distress and the use of scolding and spanking, and how these associations differ across income levels. Addressing these gaps is crucial for deepening our understanding of social inequalities in physical violence and verbal aggression against children, a key to clarifying the needs of children whose parents have chronic mental health

Somatization and experience of physical, psychological, and sexual violence among women consulting gynecological clinics: a waiting room survey.

INTRODUCTION: Somatization disorders belong to a category of psychiatric conditions in which psychological distress and impairment are manifested as physical symptoms. Affected patients tend to utilize specialist healthcare services more frequently and have more emergency visits than those without somatization. From a gynecological perspective, it is of relevance to investigate whether any specific somatic symptoms are linked to previous experience of physical, psychological, or sexual violence. The study aimed to explore whether any specific symptoms could be associated with level of somatiza

Prevalence of Violence Perpetration by Men Aged 18-24 Years in Low- and Middle-Income Countries Who Were Exposed to Violence During Childhood - Eight Countries, 2018-2023.

Violence is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among young adults in low- and middle-income countries. Men aged 18-24 years (young men) account for the majority of victims and perpetrators of many types of interpersonal violence. Childhood experiences, such as exposure to emotional, physical, or sexual violence or witnessing violence in their homes or communities, might increase risk for perpetration of violence in adulthood. Data from eight Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys conducted in low- and middle-income countries during 2018-2023 were analyzed to assess prevalence of phy

Rediscovery of animality in the concept of sport: a posthuman perspective.

The concept of sport functions as an implicit premise in almost all sport-related research and practice, yet its definition itself is seldom subjected to critical scrutiny. Traditionally, sport has been characterized by elements such as playfulness, competitiveness, physicality, and organization. However, the concept is not universal; rather, it undergoes continual transformation in response to historical and social conditions, and many studies and practices have tended to overlook this aspect. This study, therefore, seeks to critically reassess the traditional concept of sport through the len
