Sensory-Strength Training Improves Postural Balance and Working Memory in Children With Dyslexia.

This randomized controlled trial examined the effects of combined sensory and strength training (SST) on postural balance and working memory in children with dyslexia. Twenty-nine dyslexic children (six females/23 males; mean age: 9.79 ± 1.44 years) were assigned to three groups: a SST group, a strength training group, and a control group. The intervention lasted 6 weeks, comprising three sessions per week, with each session lasting 45-60 min. Preassessment and postassessments included measures of postural balance and working memory, with muscle strength evaluated as a secondary outcome. After

GRAPHOS re-examined: graph-theoretic features do not improve dyslexia screening, and a demographic confound in the Dytective dataset.

INTRODUCTION: Most machine learning methods for dyslexia screening treat the performance measurements of cognitive tasks as independent feature vectors. It has been hypothesised that this discards information carried by the interdependence among tasks probing shared cognitive processes. This paper tests that hypothesis and does not find support for it. METHODS: We evaluate GRAPHOS, a graph-theoretic framework that builds task correlation networks from gamified cognitive assessment data, on the Dytective dataset of 3,644 participants (392 dyslexic). Model, aggregation strategy and decision thr

Pediatric Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice Part I: Voice Stimuli for Children.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop and test standardized stimuli for the Pediatric Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice protocol. The use of these stimuli for cepstral/spectral voice measures was also considered. METHOD: Three sets of standardized sentences and four prompts designed to elicit connected speech were developed and tested in order to identify the most effective stimuli for use with children. One hundred forty children with (n = 50) and without (n = 90) benign vocal fold lesions recorded all potential stimuli, as well as the sentences developed for the adult Cons

Voice-Related Outcomes Among Patients With Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) may influence voice through effects on mandibular movement and vocal tract configuration. This review synthesized subjective and objective voice-related outcomes among patients with TMD. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE via Ovid, PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar was completed, with no date restrictions. Observational studies were eligible if they included patients with TMD and reported at least one voice-related outcome. Methodological quality was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. D

Cross-Validation of Acoustic Roughness Index in Korean.

OBJECTIVES: The Acoustic Roughness Index (ARI) is a multivariate acoustic measure specifically developed to objectively quantify vocal roughness by integrating multiple acoustic features, including subharmonic phenomena that are difficult to capture using conventional acoustic measures. Because the ARI analyzes concatenated voice samples that include connected speech, its performance may be influenced by language-specific phonetic and prosodic characteristics. Although its clinical utility has been demonstrated in Japanese and German populations, it has not been validated in Korean speakers. T

Laryngology Patient-Reported Outcome Measures and Demographics as Predictors of Dysphonia-Related Procedures.

OBJECTIVES: Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are popular in laryngology clinics. We hypothesized that certain PROMs and demographic data might identify which dysphonic patients are more likely to require a procedure by a laryngologist prior to initial examination. METHODS: This study took place at one academic medical center laryngology clinic from September 2021 to October 2023. A prospectively collected new laryngology patient database was queried for a chief complaint inclusive of dysphonia; Vocal Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10), Reflux Symptom Index, and Glottal Function Index (GFI) s

Cross-Cultural Adaptation, Validity, and Reliability of the Dysphonia Risk Screening Protocol-General for Turkish-Speaking Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Screening is a critical first step in the early identification and prevention of voice disorders, particularly among at-risk populations. The Dysphonia Risk Screening Protocol-General (DRSP-G) is a comprehensive screening tool that also functions as a standardized patient history; however, no equivalent instrument has previously been available for Turkish-speaking individuals. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the DRSP-G into Turkish (DRTP-TR) and to examine its validity and reliability. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: The DRSP-G was translated following the Scientific Ad

Clinical Utility of Aerodynamic Measures in Vocal Fold Augmentation Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Glottic insufficiency can result in respiratory-laryngeal dysfunction that contributes to dysphonia. Instrumental assessments complement patient- and clinician-reported evaluations. Aerodynamic measurements provide quantitative data to characterize phonatory function. This study aimed to determine whether preoperative phonatory aerodynamic measures are associated with outcomes following vocal fold medialization for glottic insufficiency. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent injection laryngoplasty or type 1 thyroplasty at the Emory Voice Center from 2022 to 202

Effortful Eyelid Opening With Enhanced Mechanoreceptor Stretch in the Superior Tarsal Muscle Accelerates Inferred Microsaccade Frequency and Velocity, Exacerbating Reflexive Frequent Blinking: A Report of Two Cases.

To maintain eyelid opening and arousal without proprioceptive or visual fading, microsaccades of fast-twitch fibers (FTFs) in the levator palpebrae superioris muscle (LPSM) and the global layer of the superior rectus muscle (GLSRM) continually stretch mechanoreceptors in the superior tarsal muscle (STM). This stretch generates proprioceptive signals that induce reflex contractions of LPSM slow-twitch fibers (STFs) and regulate arousal via the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MTN) and locus coeruleus (LC). Concurrently, counteracting microsaccades of FTFs in the global layer of the inferior re

Postoperative Voice Changes Over Time Following Endoscopic or Robotic Hemithyroidectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative voice impairment is a common concern after thyroidectomy. However, postoperative voice recovery and its association with clinicopathologic factors remain unclear in robotic and endoscopic approaches. This study evaluated postoperative changes over time in perceptual, acoustic, aerodynamic, and patient-reported voice outcomes and identified recovery patterns according to clinicopathologic factors in both surgical approaches. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 1106 patients who underwent minimally invasive thyroidectomy for thyroid malignancy between 2018 and 2025. Am

Primary Epstein-Barr virus-negative lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx mimicking nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a case report.

Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) of the larynx is exceptionally rare and can closely mimic undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. A 78-year-old man presented with progressive dysphonia and dysphagia. Endoscopy and computed tomography showed a supraglottic lesion with bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy (cT2N2M0). Biopsy demonstrated poorly differentiated non-keratinizing carcinoma with dense lymphoid stroma and a Schmincke-type pattern. Tumor cells were positive for p40, p63, and pancytokeratins; Epstein-Barr virus testing was negative. After exclusion of a nasopharyngeal primary, th

Primary thyroid hydatid cyst: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic infection caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus, with the liver and lungs being the most frequently involved organs. Thyroid gland involvement is exceptionally rare, accounting for approximately 1% of all human hydatid cases and posing significant diagnostic challenges, particularly in endemic regions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old woman from a rural area presented with a 5-year history of a slowly enlarging anterior neck mass, with recent progression to dysphagia and dysphonia. She reported regular consumption of raw v

What does it take to grasp a tool? A fine-grained multiple-case analysis of hand-tool and tool-object interaction errors in apraxia.

Apraxia of tool use is a neuropsychological syndrome characterized by difficulties in selecting or using familiar tools that cannot be better explained by primary motor, sensory, attentional, or language deficits. The neuropsychological literature indicates that tool use is a complex, multifaceted ability relying on heterogeneous cognitive processes and neural substrates. Patients may commit errors at different stages of the grasp-to-use sequence, including hand-tool interaction errors (e.g., holding tools upside-down), tool-object association errors (i.e., incorrect matching of the functional

Towards a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) for Improving Phonological Processing in Developmental Dyslexia: An Exploratory Study.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have immense potential regarding the provision of therapies for disorders of development, but to date have typically been created for non-linguistic disorders such as ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Here, we present a BCI designed to improve linguistic phonological processing during natural speech listening, aimed at participants with developmental dyslexia. Phonological 'deficits' are considered a core feature of dyslexia across languages and are present from infancy in those later diagnosed with dyslexia. Here, a non-invasive EEG-BCI relying

Investigating the Effects of Amateur Singing on Speaking Voice Quality, Function, and Motor Control Across Adulthood.

OBJECTIVES: Singing is an accessible activity that may promote vocal health, including vocal function, quality, and motor control. However, evidence remains limited and heterogeneous, as some studies have shown an association between singing practice and dysphonia-related complaints in certain populations. This study investigated whether amateur singing practice influences adult speaking voice outcomes related to function, quality, and motor control, and whether it may moderate age-related vocal changes. METHODS: Participants were 143 French-speaking adults (20-98 years; 72 singers, 71 non-si

Efficacy of Systemic Bevacizumab in Juvenile-Onset Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis: An Individual Patient Data Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (joRRP) is a benign but often aggressive HPV-related disease of the pediatric airway, frequently requiring repeated surgical debulking. These repeated interventions are associated with substantial morbidity and impaired quality of life, particularly due to persistent dysphonia. Systemic bevacizumab, an anti-VEGF monoclonal antibody, has emerged as a promising adjuvant therapy, but individual patient-level evidence synthesizing its efficacy across studies is lacking. METHODS: We performed an individual patient data meta-analysis to
