The Effect of Group Voice Therapy via Telepractice on Voice Fatigue in Preschool Teachers.

BACKGROUND: Although in-person and face-to-face voice therapies have been used for years in professional voice users with voice fatigue, limited research examining the outcomes of group voice therapy via telepractice is available. AIMS: This study investigated the effectiveness of group voice therapy via telepractice among preschool teachers with voice fatigue. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Forty women preschool teachers with voice fatigue were recruited and randomly assigned to eight groups of five participants each in this prospective longitudinal design. The 45-min group voice therapy sessions

Comorbidity patterns and sex differences in late-onset Alzheimer's disease using electronic records.

In this retrospective study, we applied unsupervised learning techniques to electronic medical records from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to characterize Alzheimer's disease (AD) comorbidity patterns. Given the well-known female predominance in AD, we performed sex-stratified analyses to explore differences in comorbidity patterns based on sex. Findings were evaluated using an independent UC-wide dataset. Among 8,363 patients in the UCSF dataset, we observed five data-driven comorbidity clusters related to cardiovascular conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, and frailty-

Endoscopic Management of Laryngopyoceles: A Report of Two Cases.

Laryngoceles are rare pathological air-filled dilatations of the laryngeal saccule. Rarely, laryngoceles can become infected and pus-filled, forming laryngopyoceles. If untreated, they can lead to life-threatening complications including airway obstruction and deep neck space sepsis. The generally accepted management of laryngopyoceles is surgical, but there are no consensus guidelines available. We present two cases of elderly patients (89- and 90-year-old) with laryngopyoceles who were successfully managed with endoscopic laryngeal surgery. Both presented with worsening airway symptoms on th

Ruptured vertebral artery-origin aneurysm causing mediastinal compression and massive hemothorax in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1-associated vasculopathy is uncommon but may result in catastrophic arterial rupture. We report a life-threatening presentation successfully managed with emergency endovascular exclusion. A 44-year-old woman with known neurofibromatosis type 1 presented with acute chest pain, dyspnea, and dysphonia. Computed tomography angiography revealed a 23-mm ruptured aneurysm arising from the ostium of the left vertebral artery that was associated with hemomediastinum, airway displacement, and massive hemothorax. Emergency endovascular repair using covered stent-grafts achieved co

Understanding Teachers' Perspectives on Voice Relative to their Occupation.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to characterize a large teacher population's vocal health-related practices, voice use requirements and patterns, prevalence of previous voice-related training(s), and their desire for future (voice-related) training. Another aim was to assess the interest in a future study centered on developing a voice protocol specific to the teacher population. METHODS: A total of 164 teachers (preschool through 12th grade) in the United States completed an anonymous 28-item online questionnaire addressing voice care, voice use, vocal demands, vocal difficulties, health-

Laryngeal vs. Esophageal Acid-Mediated Injury in Bulimia Nervosa: A Systematic Review.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a psychiatric eating disorder that can potentially be life-threatening and is characterized by recurrent binging and/or purging. During purging episodes that involve self-induced vomiting, laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) can occur as gastric acid is forcefully pushed through the esophageal sphincter and anteriorly to the acid-sensitive laryngopharyngeal tissue. While the esophageal mucosal lining can tolerate repeated exposure to acid before sustaining significant erosion, the laryngeal mucosa exhibits greater sensitivity, reacting to even mild exposure with inflammation

Linking visual span and reading speed in dyslexia.

This study examines visual processing in dyslexia using a psychophysical measure linked to reading speed, the visual span, defined as the number of letters reliably identified within a single fixation. We asked whether reduced visual span is associated with slower reading in dyslexia. In a laboratory study, adults with dyslexia and typical readers completed standardized assessments, reading speed, and visual span measurements. Individuals with dyslexia showed significantly slower reading speeds and narrower visual span profiles than typical readers. Visual span size was positively correlated w

Massive Warfarin-Induced Lingual Hematoma: A Case Report.

Vitamin K antagonist (VKA) therapy can cause major bleeding, most commonly GI or intracranial. Airway hematomas, though rare, are potentially life-threatening. Spontaneous lingual hematoma is an exceptionally uncommon presentation, insidious in onset and potentially rapidly fatal if overlooked. We report an elderly woman on warfarin for atrial fibrillation (AF) who developed progressive tongue swelling, dysphonia, and dyspnea over 24 hours, without trauma, a dental procedure, or fever. Examination revealed cervical and lingual swelling with gingival bleeding. Despite a clinically threatened ai

Selective impairment in musical chord Reading in posterior cortical atrophy: A case study of integrative visual agnosia.

BACKGROUND: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by visuospatial and/or visuoperceptual deficits, resulting from atrophy in the occipitoparietal and/or occipitotemporal cortices. Among reported cases, visuoperceptual deficits are less commonly described compared to visuospatial impairments. OBJECTIVE: To address this gap, we present a qualitative behavioral observation of an individual with PCA in which visuoperceptual deficits manifested as symbolically intuitive symptoms. METHODS: This case study examines a 58-year-old female with PCA whose pr

Brain-computer interfaces and neuroprostheses for severe speech impairment in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a relentlessly progressive neurodegenerative disorder that frequently culminates in severe dysarthria and anarthria, profoundly isolating patients and diminishing their quality of life. Traditional speech therapy and conventional augmentative and alternative communication devices rely on residual motor control and become ineffective in late-stage ALS. In response, brain-computer interfaces and speech neuroprostheses have emerged as transformative solutions. By decoding neural signals directly from the motor cortex and translating them into synthesized spe

Technological interventions in dyslexia: a neurobiological perspective of language learning.

OBJECTIVE: Developmental dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental language learning disorder characterised by persistent difficulty in phonological processing and fluent word recognition. To address these challenges, a range of interventions has been developed to support reading acquisition and fluency. These interventions include a promising field of technological aids that cater to a broader audience. However, the limited understanding of the neurobiological effects of technological interventions restricts significant evaluation of their effectiveness. The paper examines the influence of technologic

Hemi-see-saw nystagmus with superimposed pendular oculopalatal tremor: case report and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Hemi-see-saw nystagmus (HSSN) is an uncommon subtype, characterized by elevation and intorsion of one eye with contralateral depression and extorsion, typically in a jerk pattern. It is associated with unilateral lesions of the interstitial nucleus of Cajal and the medial longitudinal fasciculus, both of which are involved in the ocular tilt reaction (OTR). Although its association with oculopalatal tremor (OPT) has been described, it is rare. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of seven databases on HSSN, extracting data on demographics, etiology, lesion location, oculomoto

Policy and Systemic Barriers to Accurate Diagnosis of Childhood Apraxia of Speech in Iran: A Policy Brief.

Accurate diagnosis of Childhood Apraxia of Speech presents a significant clinical challenge in Iran, where the lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate assessment tools frequently leads to misdiagnosis, delayed intervention, and increased healthcare costs. The effective implementation of these tools necessitates sufficient knowledge resources, financial support, and specialized human capital to conduct experimental research and provide equitable, evidence-based clinical services.

GRAPHOS re-examined: graph-theoretic features do not improve dyslexia screening, and a demographic confound in the Dytective dataset.

INTRODUCTION: Most machine learning methods for dyslexia screening treat the performance measurements of cognitive tasks as independent feature vectors. It has been hypothesised that this discards information carried by the interdependence among tasks probing shared cognitive processes. This paper tests that hypothesis and does not find support for it. METHODS: We evaluate GRAPHOS, a graph-theoretic framework that builds task correlation networks from gamified cognitive assessment data, on the Dytective dataset of 3,644 participants (392 dyslexic). Model, aggregation strategy and decision thr

Cross-Validation of Acoustic Roughness Index in Korean.

OBJECTIVES: The Acoustic Roughness Index (ARI) is a multivariate acoustic measure specifically developed to objectively quantify vocal roughness by integrating multiple acoustic features, including subharmonic phenomena that are difficult to capture using conventional acoustic measures. Because the ARI analyzes concatenated voice samples that include connected speech, its performance may be influenced by language-specific phonetic and prosodic characteristics. Although its clinical utility has been demonstrated in Japanese and German populations, it has not been validated in Korean speakers. T

Laryngology Patient-Reported Outcome Measures and Demographics as Predictors of Dysphonia-Related Procedures.

OBJECTIVES: Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are popular in laryngology clinics. We hypothesized that certain PROMs and demographic data might identify which dysphonic patients are more likely to require a procedure by a laryngologist prior to initial examination. METHODS: This study took place at one academic medical center laryngology clinic from September 2021 to October 2023. A prospectively collected new laryngology patient database was queried for a chief complaint inclusive of dysphonia; Vocal Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10), Reflux Symptom Index, and Glottal Function Index (GFI) s
