Laryngeal Manifestations of Rheumatic Disease.

Rheumatologic diseases are systemic, immune-mediated disorders that frequently involve the larynx, producing manifestations that range from subtle dysphonia to life-threatening airway obstruction. Laryngeal involvement may precede systemic disease, progress despite adequate systemic control, or be the sole presenting feature of active disease. Diagnosis relies on flexible laryngoscopy with disease-specific serology and biopsy when indicated. Corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and biologics such as rituximab form the foundation of medical therapy, while surgery ranges from serial endoscopic d

Central auditory processing skills in stuttering school-age children with and without dyslexia: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) has been linked separately to developmental stuttering (DS) and developmental dyslexia (DD), with limited information available when both disorders are present. Our study aimed to evaluate central auditory processing (CAP) in children with both disorders. METHODS: The study included 39 children distributed into three groups: two stuttering groups, with dyslexia (n= 13: 9 males, 4 females), and without dyslexia (n= 13: 10 males, 3 females), and a typically developing group (n= 13: 8 males, 5 females). The three groups were aged 6-12

Effects of Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) in Cultured Human Vocal Fold Fibroblasts.

OBJECTIVE: Human exposures to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a major air pollutant generated by multiple anthropogenic sources, are increasing worldwide. Though its adverse impacts on the lower airway are well-researched, PM2.5 has poorly understood effects on the upper airway. Our previous clinical research revealed increased dysphonia in the setting of elevated PM2.5 levels, though underlying interactions between PM2.5 and the vocal folds are unclear. This study evaluated the effects of PM2.5 on cultured human vocal fold fibroblasts (hVFFs), the primary cell type of the lamina propria. ME

Inhaled Corticosteroid Use and Self-Reported Voice Problems in a Nordic Population-Based Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Voice problems are frequently reported among users of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), but it remains unclear whether these problems reflect pharmacological effects, asthma, or comorbid chronic cough. AIM: This study aimed to examine the association between ICS use and voice problems in a Nordic population-based cohort, accounting for asthma symptoms and chronic cough. Secondary aims included dose-response patterns and differences by inhaler device type. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from adults in Sweden and Norway participating in the Respiratory Health in Northern Europe IV stud

Localized Laryngeal Amyloidosis Treated With Systemic Therapy: Case Series and Literature Review.

Localized laryngeal amyloidosis is a localized plasma cell-mediated process characterized by extracellular amyloid deposition confined to the larynx. Surgical excision has traditionally been the mainstay of treatment; however, complete resection may be anatomically difficult, and some patients experience persistent or progressive disease. Evidence supporting systemic therapy in localized disease remains limited. We report two adult female patients with biopsy-proven localized laryngeal amyloidosis without evidence of systemic involvement who were treated with plasma cell-directed immunochemoth

What counts as an error in nonword reading? A methods study of acquired phonological dyslexia.

Acquired phonological dyslexia (PD) is typically characterised by impaired nonword reading, but defining what constitutes a nonword reading "error" is challenging due to variability in how even healthy readers pronounce nonwords. This study examined different methods for classifying such errors using data from younger adults (n = 41), older adults (n = 25), and a case series of individuals with suspected acquired PD (n = 6). Three scoring approaches were compared: (1) a mode-response accuracy method, which matches responses to the most common pronunciation; (2) an average response-overlap meth

Neural Cell Models of Specific Reading Disabilities: Identification of Cellular and Transcriptome Alterations.

Based on post-mortem studies, a long-standing hypothesis on the biological bases of specific reading disabilities (RD) has been that alterations in neuronal migration alter language neural circuits. However, there are questions concerning the original studies (small sample size, comorbidities). Further, this idea has not been strongly supported by current genetic studies. In this study, we test altered neural cell phenotypes using cells derived from two pairs of siblings strongly discordant for reading-probands with severe RD and their strong-reader siblings. We observed significant difference

Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors and Laryngological Outcomes in Patients with Non-Head and Neck Cancer.

OBJECTIVES: As immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) utilization increases in cancer treatment, immune-related adverse events continue to be recognized. Voice, swallowing, and oral dysfunction substantially impair quality of life and treatment tolerance in cancer patients, but the laryngological risks of ICI therapy remain unclear. We compared outcomes for these functions after ICI versus non-ICI antineoplastic therapies. METHODS: Using the TriNetX research network, we identified adults with non-head and neck malignancies treated with ICIs versus non-ICI systemic antineoplastics. To isolate off-t

Decodification for dyslexia and broader reading difficulties.

UNLABELLED: Dyslexia is often addressed through specialised intervention, yet growing scholarship in literacy and educational psychology also underscores the importance of contextualised and meaningful literacy experiences for students with reading difficulties. In this article, I argue the relevance of Paulo Freire's concept of decodification for reading instruction for students with dyslexia and broader reading difficulties. Drawing on the literature on dyslexia, background knowledge, culturally relevant text selection and experiences of emergent bilingual learners, I argue that decodified t

Short-Term Voice Outcomes of Eclectic Voice Therapy for Vocal Nodules.

OBJECTIVES: The treatment of vocal nodules includes microsurgery, voice therapy, or a combination. Research studies have reported the benefits of voice therapy in vocal nodules; however, there is less evidence on systematic voice therapy approaches specific to vocal nodules. Hence, the current study aims to establish the short-term outcome of a systematic Eclectic Voice Therapy Program named Comprehensive Voice Habilitation Program (CVHP), modified in the treatment of vocal nodules. METHOD: Fifteen individuals with vocal nodules in the age range of 20-55 years received the modified CVHP for 1

Progressive Cognitive Decline and Pyramidal Signs in a Patient With a Novel Homozygous c.395A>T; p.Lys132Met Mutation in CHCHD2.

Biallelic CHCHD2 variants are rare. We report a consanguineous man with a novel homozygous CHCHD2 c.395A>T (p.Lys132Met) variant who developed progressive cognitive decline, apraxia, oculomotor impairment, and pyramidal signs without parkinsonism. Clinicians should consider CHCHD2 in familial dementia with pyramidal signs, even when motor parkinsonism is absent.

Heidenhain Disease: Challenging Diagnosis of a Creutzfeldt-Jakob Variant.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare disorder caused by prions, characterized by rapid deterioration of cognitive and neurological functions. The Heidenhain variant is an uncommon form in which visual symptoms are prominent at onset due to involvement of the occipital cortex, leading to a delayed diagnosis. We present the case of a 67-year-old woman who initially exhibited decreased visual acuity, followed by difficulties in reaching for and identifying objects, experiencing optic apraxia, psychomotor slowing, perseverative behavior, and impaired judgment. Brain magnetic resonance imaging

Phonological Skills Mediate the Association Between Left Beta/Gamma Oscillation and Reading Ability in Chinese Children.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate whether Chinese children with dyslexia exhibit atypical left-hemispheric beta/gamma oscillatory patterns during nonverbal auditory processing and to examine whether phonological skills mediate the relationship between these oscillations and reading ability. METHOD: Forty-two Chinese children with dyslexia and 47 typically developing controls underwent electroencephalography recording while listening to amplitude-modulated white noise (1-80 Hz). Event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) was quantified over the left- and right-hemisphere regions of inte

Boder's dyslexia subtypes as a severity continuum with a definitional route axis - A behavioural companion to harmonised qEEG cross-spectra.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dyslexia is classically divided into Boder's dysphonetic (DD), dyseidetic (DYD) and mixed (MD) subtypes, assigned by direct reading-and-spelling testing. Its computerised Italian adaptation, the Direct Test of Reading and Spelling (DTRS), assigns the subtype algorithmically from the reading quotient and the percentage of correctly spelt known and unknown words. AIMS: Using the same source clinical cohort and the same stable and sparse regression classifier (SSRC) as our companion, we asked whether the subtypes form natural clusters or lie on a continuum, and whether
