Sensory-Strength Training Improves Postural Balance and Working Memory in Children With Dyslexia.

This randomized controlled trial examined the effects of combined sensory and strength training (SST) on postural balance and working memory in children with dyslexia. Twenty-nine dyslexic children (six females/23 males; mean age: 9.79 ± 1.44 years) were assigned to three groups: a SST group, a strength training group, and a control group. The intervention lasted 6 weeks, comprising three sessions per week, with each session lasting 45-60 min. Preassessment and postassessments included measures of postural balance and working memory, with muscle strength evaluated as a secondary outcome. After

GRAPHOS re-examined: graph-theoretic features do not improve dyslexia screening, and a demographic confound in the Dytective dataset.

INTRODUCTION: Most machine learning methods for dyslexia screening treat the performance measurements of cognitive tasks as independent feature vectors. It has been hypothesised that this discards information carried by the interdependence among tasks probing shared cognitive processes. This paper tests that hypothesis and does not find support for it. METHODS: We evaluate GRAPHOS, a graph-theoretic framework that builds task correlation networks from gamified cognitive assessment data, on the Dytective dataset of 3,644 participants (392 dyslexic). Model, aggregation strategy and decision thr

Phonological Awareness of Dyslexic Jordanian Arabic-Speaking Children: The Role of Diglossia.

PURPOSE: This study examines the impact of diglossia on the phonological awareness of dyslexic Jordanian Arabic-speaking children, focusing on deletion, segmentation, and reading tasks in both Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and Colloquial Arabic (CA). METHOD: Forty dyslexic and 40 typically developing (TD) children from special education resource rooms in four private schools in Amman, Jordan, participated. RESULTS: Statistical analysis revealed that both groups performed better in MSA than in CA across all tasks, with TD children outperforming dyslexic children and task difficulty decreasing

Towards a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) for Improving Phonological Processing in Developmental Dyslexia: An Exploratory Study.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have immense potential regarding the provision of therapies for disorders of development, but to date have typically been created for non-linguistic disorders such as ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Here, we present a BCI designed to improve linguistic phonological processing during natural speech listening, aimed at participants with developmental dyslexia. Phonological 'deficits' are considered a core feature of dyslexia across languages and are present from infancy in those later diagnosed with dyslexia. Here, a non-invasive EEG-BCI relying

Socioeconomic Status and Fine-Grained Literacy Outcomes in Heritage Bilingual and Monolingual Children With and Without Specific Learning Disorders.

This study investigated the sociolinguistic background and the cognitive and literacy profiles of heritage bilingual (HB) children with specific learning disorders (SLD) in reading and spelling or typical development (TD) in comparison with their monolingual peers. About 454 primary school children were included and divided into four groups: HBs with SLD (n = 108) or TD (n = 70), and monolinguals with SLD (n = 106) or TD (n = 170). Children completed tasks assessing nonverbal IQ, working memory, processing speed, nonword repetition, listening comprehension, and literacy skills, including word,

Dyslexia screening? As easy as a game. The Starlex project: evidence from an Italian pilot study.

In recent years, serious games have gained increasing attention as effective tools for supporting learning and assessing emerging cognitive skills in early educational settings. Within this perspective, the present study introduces Starlex, a serious game designed to screen pre-literacy skills in children aged 5-7 years, a critical stage for the development of foundational reading and writing abilities. Developed within a PNRR-funded project, the game comprises four mini-games aimed at assessing key predictors of reading acquisition, including visual discrimination and working memory. Followin

ADHD symptoms and learning difficulties: co-occurrence and directionality from Grades 1 to 9.

BACKGROUND: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk of learning difficulties. This association may reflect shared risk factors, ADHD symptoms hindering learning, or learning difficulties increasing ADHD symptoms. We aimed to map rates of co-occurrence among ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and reading comprehension difficulties and to investigate directional influences between ADHD symptoms and reading fluency, arithmetic, and reading comprehension. METHODS: Reading fluency, arithmetic, and reading comprehension were assessed longitudinally in approxima

Central auditory processing skills in stuttering school-age children with and without dyslexia: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) has been linked separately to developmental stuttering (DS) and developmental dyslexia (DD), with limited information available when both disorders are present. Our study aimed to evaluate central auditory processing (CAP) in children with both disorders. METHODS: The study included 39 children distributed into three groups: two stuttering groups, with dyslexia (n= 13: 9 males, 4 females), and without dyslexia (n= 13: 10 males, 3 females), and a typically developing group (n= 13: 8 males, 5 females). The three groups were aged 6-12

What counts as an error in nonword reading? A methods study of acquired phonological dyslexia.

Acquired phonological dyslexia (PD) is typically characterised by impaired nonword reading, but defining what constitutes a nonword reading "error" is challenging due to variability in how even healthy readers pronounce nonwords. This study examined different methods for classifying such errors using data from younger adults (n = 41), older adults (n = 25), and a case series of individuals with suspected acquired PD (n = 6). Three scoring approaches were compared: (1) a mode-response accuracy method, which matches responses to the most common pronunciation; (2) an average response-overlap meth

Neural Cell Models of Specific Reading Disabilities: Identification of Cellular and Transcriptome Alterations.

Based on post-mortem studies, a long-standing hypothesis on the biological bases of specific reading disabilities (RD) has been that alterations in neuronal migration alter language neural circuits. However, there are questions concerning the original studies (small sample size, comorbidities). Further, this idea has not been strongly supported by current genetic studies. In this study, we test altered neural cell phenotypes using cells derived from two pairs of siblings strongly discordant for reading-probands with severe RD and their strong-reader siblings. We observed significant difference

Decodification for dyslexia and broader reading difficulties.

UNLABELLED: Dyslexia is often addressed through specialised intervention, yet growing scholarship in literacy and educational psychology also underscores the importance of contextualised and meaningful literacy experiences for students with reading difficulties. In this article, I argue the relevance of Paulo Freire's concept of decodification for reading instruction for students with dyslexia and broader reading difficulties. Drawing on the literature on dyslexia, background knowledge, culturally relevant text selection and experiences of emergent bilingual learners, I argue that decodified t

Phonological Skills Mediate the Association Between Left Beta/Gamma Oscillation and Reading Ability in Chinese Children.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate whether Chinese children with dyslexia exhibit atypical left-hemispheric beta/gamma oscillatory patterns during nonverbal auditory processing and to examine whether phonological skills mediate the relationship between these oscillations and reading ability. METHOD: Forty-two Chinese children with dyslexia and 47 typically developing controls underwent electroencephalography recording while listening to amplitude-modulated white noise (1-80 Hz). Event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) was quantified over the left- and right-hemisphere regions of inte

Boder's dyslexia subtypes as a severity continuum with a definitional route axis - A behavioural companion to harmonised qEEG cross-spectra.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dyslexia is classically divided into Boder's dysphonetic (DD), dyseidetic (DYD) and mixed (MD) subtypes, assigned by direct reading-and-spelling testing. Its computerised Italian adaptation, the Direct Test of Reading and Spelling (DTRS), assigns the subtype algorithmically from the reading quotient and the percentage of correctly spelt known and unknown words. AIMS: Using the same source clinical cohort and the same stable and sparse regression classifier (SSRC) as our companion, we asked whether the subtypes form natural clusters or lie on a continuum, and whether

The influence of script type on handwriting in children with dyslexia: a comparison across Cyrillic and Latin scripts.

The present study investigated whether script type (Latin vs. Cyrillic) differentially influences the temporal characteristics of handwriting in children with dyslexia, chronological age-matched controls (CA), and spelling-level matched controls (SL). Four tasks varying in cognitive and linguistic demands were administered: name and surname writing, an alphabet task, a dictation task including real words, pseudowords, and nonwords, and a text composition task. Temporal handwriting measures were obtained using Eye and Pen software. Writing in Cyrillic generally required longer total task durati

MZI-switched dual-input SOI-AWG interrogator for neural-network-assisted FBG interrogation.

A dual-input silicon-on-insulator (SOI) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogator, enabled by an on-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) switch, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The device integrates a polarization beam splitter (PBS), a thermo-optic MZI, and an asymmetric dual-input AWG. The MZI enables on-chip selection of two AWG input ports, generating complementary spectral responses without increasing the number of output channels. Due to fabrication-induced non-idealities in SOI-AWG responses, conventional fitting-based interrogation methods su

Spatial-temporal representation of cortical neural activity evoked by acupuncture stimulation.

UNLABELLED: Acupuncture modulates cognitive functions through acupoint stimulation and demonstrates significant regulatory effects on brain disorders. However, the underlying neurodynamic mechanisms of acupuncture remain unclear due to a lack of effective measures of brain activity. In this study, we developed an acupuncture-related potential (ARP) method based on Electroencephalogram (EEG) to elucidate the dynamic representation mechanisms underlying acupuncture stimulation. By analyzing ARP signal features and functional networks to capture stimulus-evoked brain activity, we derived spatiote

Shared and Unique Connectivity Signatures of Reading and Language Deficits.

Reading ability depends on multiple cognitive skills, including decoding and language comprehension, which can vary widely across individuals-even among those with similarly low reading performance. To better understand the brain basis of this variability, we used connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) to identify large-scale functional connectivity patterns associated with reading and language skills in a population-based sample. Cross-sectional CPM models were trained using functional connectivity data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development study (n = 6894) and tested in two
