Machine learning-driven risk screening for Chinese developmental dyslexia in children: Theoretical framework, feature selection, and simulation-based methodological illustration.

Developmental dyslexia affects Chinese children's reading development, and school-based risk screening may help identify children who require further assessment and support. However, interpretable screening-oriented models remain limited by small samples, insufficient standardization, limited longitudinal evidence, and weak cross-school validation. This study proposes a simulation-based methodological framework for organizing and evaluating multidimensional cognitive indicators of Chinese developmental dyslexia. The framework integrates phonological processing, orthographic processing, attenti

Executive function, attention deficit hyperactivity symptoms and theory of mind in young adults with learning disorders.

This study positions ADHD symptoms as a mediating variable to investigate the potential relationships among executive function, ADHD symptoms, and Theory of Mind. The sample included 160 college students (100 men, 60 women) aged 22-25 (M = 24.80, SD = 1.01). All participants with LD were evaluated prior to entering higher education and were diagnosed with dyslexia (n = 60), dysgraphia (n = 60), and difficulties in executive functioning (n = 40). 100 participants stated having been also diagnosed with ADHD. The results indicated that Executive function exerts a negative and statistically signif

Toward early dyslexia screening through handwriting: A trustworthy XAI-enhanced deep learning framework.

Dyslexia, a prevalent learning disorder, significantly impairs children's ability to process written language, often leading to challenges such as letter reversals, inconsistent spacing, and scrambled writing sequences. Early detection is critical for timely intervention, yet traditional diagnostic methods such as behavioral assessments and neuroimaging-are either time-consuming, subjective, or prohibitively expensive. Recent advances in deep learning offer promising alternatives, particularly through handwriting analysis, which is non-invasive and scalable. However, the "black-box" nature of

An explainable machine learning model based on multidimensional task-state electroencephalography for identifying attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder comorbid developmental dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and developmental dyslexia (DD) are highly comorbid, yet objective differentiation from individual disorders remains challenging due to the lack of neurophysiological biomarkers. This study aimed to develop an interpretable machine learning model leveraging multidimensional task-state EEG features to distinguish ADHD-DD comorbidity from ADHD and typical development (TD). METHODS: Ninety children (27 ADHD-DD, 40 ADHD, 23 TD) underwent EEG during a VSWM task. Five feature categories were extracted: event-related potentials, time-freque

Psychometric Properties of the Dyslexia Referral Checklist for English- and Spanish-Speaking Children.

Dyslexia affects 5%-15% of children, yet only 32% of U.S. fourth graders read proficiently. Early intervention is crucial for addressing reading difficulty (RD) risk. While most states require early dyslexia screening, there is a need for better tools and approaches for identifying students who may benefit from further evaluation, especially for students from Spanish language backgrounds. This study investigates the integration of teacher reports and direct assessments to enhance the accuracy of early identification. We evaluated the psychometric properties and concurrent validity of the Dysle

Emotional Competence in Children With Language and Learning Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Children with language and learning disorders (LLDs)-including developmental language disorder (DLD), dyslexia, and dyscalculia-often experience emotional difficulties, yet no previous synthesis has quantified these challenges across all the dimensions of emotional competence. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine whether children with LLDs differ from their typically developing (TD) peers in emotional identification, understanding, regulation, and expression. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, 855 studies

Altered Cortico-cerebellar effective connectivity of the Visuo-attentional system is associated with READ1 deletion in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a heritable neurodevelopmental disorder associated with altered brain connectivity. The influence of genetic risks on cortico-cerebellar effective connectivity (EC) remains unclear. The present study investigates how reading proficiency and the READ1 deletion (READ1d) in the DCDC2 gene modulate visuo-attentional network dynamics. Functional MRI data were acquired in 78 children (DD and typical readers, with/without READ1d) performing a coherent motion detection task. EC within a seven-region visuo-attentional network, including magnocellular, ventral attention, a

Visuospatial and Verbal Abilities in Poor Readers: Cognitive Differences and Strategy Use.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by difficulties in reading and impairments in cognitive functions. It has also been linked to dysfunction of the brain regions involved in verbal and visuospatial processing. Although some research suggests individuals with dyslexia may rely on visuospatial strategies to compensate for their verbal difficulties, other studies have reported contradictory findings on visuospatial abilities. This study compared the cognitive performance of 11 poor readers and 15 typical readers across two verbal and four visuospatial tasks. Additionally, the strategies empl

Revisiting Identification Thresholds of Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) in Gifted Children (GC). A Comparison of Three Groups: Twice-Exceptional (TE) Children, GC Without SLD and Non-GC With SLD.

This study investigates assessment of Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) in Twice-Exceptional (TE) children, gifted children (GC) who also present SLD, in oral and written language domains. Applying the standard threshold for identification (< 7th percentile) to GC often results in the assessment and identification of SLD in the TE population, thereby limiting access to appropriate support. The objective was to determine which language tests effectively identify SLD in TE children and establish optimal threshold values. The prospective study included 301 children 7-16 years, divided into three

Symbolic and non-symbolic geometric abilities across development and in individuals with dyscalculia and dyslexia.

Geometry is fundamental to mathematical thinking, yet its foundations and difficulties in learning disorders remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the development of geometric abilities and their relationship with developmental dyscalculia and dyslexia. Seventy-nine children and adults, including individuals with and without learning difficulties, completed behavioral measures of non-symbolic geometry and a paper-and-pencil assessment of symbolic geometry. Geometric abilities continued to develop from early adolescence into young adulthood and non-symbolic geometry predicted symbolic

Comorbidity patterns and sex differences in late-onset Alzheimer's disease using electronic records.

In this retrospective study, we applied unsupervised learning techniques to electronic medical records from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to characterize Alzheimer's disease (AD) comorbidity patterns. Given the well-known female predominance in AD, we performed sex-stratified analyses to explore differences in comorbidity patterns based on sex. Findings were evaluated using an independent UC-wide dataset. Among 8,363 patients in the UCSF dataset, we observed five data-driven comorbidity clusters related to cardiovascular conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, and frailty-

Linking visual span and reading speed in dyslexia.

This study examines visual processing in dyslexia using a psychophysical measure linked to reading speed, the visual span, defined as the number of letters reliably identified within a single fixation. We asked whether reduced visual span is associated with slower reading in dyslexia. In a laboratory study, adults with dyslexia and typical readers completed standardized assessments, reading speed, and visual span measurements. Individuals with dyslexia showed significantly slower reading speeds and narrower visual span profiles than typical readers. Visual span size was positively correlated w

Technological interventions in dyslexia: a neurobiological perspective of language learning.

OBJECTIVE: Developmental dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental language learning disorder characterised by persistent difficulty in phonological processing and fluent word recognition. To address these challenges, a range of interventions has been developed to support reading acquisition and fluency. These interventions include a promising field of technological aids that cater to a broader audience. However, the limited understanding of the neurobiological effects of technological interventions restricts significant evaluation of their effectiveness. The paper examines the influence of technologic

GRAPHOS re-examined: graph-theoretic features do not improve dyslexia screening, and a demographic confound in the Dytective dataset.

INTRODUCTION: Most machine learning methods for dyslexia screening treat the performance measurements of cognitive tasks as independent feature vectors. It has been hypothesised that this discards information carried by the interdependence among tasks probing shared cognitive processes. This paper tests that hypothesis and does not find support for it. METHODS: We evaluate GRAPHOS, a graph-theoretic framework that builds task correlation networks from gamified cognitive assessment data, on the Dytective dataset of 3,644 participants (392 dyslexic). Model, aggregation strategy and decision thr

Towards a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) for Improving Phonological Processing in Developmental Dyslexia: An Exploratory Study.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have immense potential regarding the provision of therapies for disorders of development, but to date have typically been created for non-linguistic disorders such as ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Here, we present a BCI designed to improve linguistic phonological processing during natural speech listening, aimed at participants with developmental dyslexia. Phonological 'deficits' are considered a core feature of dyslexia across languages and are present from infancy in those later diagnosed with dyslexia. Here, a non-invasive EEG-BCI relying
