Cognitive Underpinnings of Functional Reading Difficulties in Polish Adults.

Background/Objectives. Low functional literacy in adulthood is a growing issue, yet the cognitive profiles of struggling adult readers in transparent orthographies remain under-researched. This study investigated the cognitive and reading-related predictors of reading comprehension in Polish adults using the Simple View of Reading framework. Methods. We analyzed data from 158 adults recruited as typical readers (TRs, n = 76) and low readers (LRs, n = 82) based on functional reading comprehension scores. Participants completed comprehensive behavioral assessments measuring decoding, listening c

Speech Sound Production in Adults with Dyslexia.

Background: Dyslexia is a reading disorder that is associated with phonological processing and awareness difficulties. However, little is known about phonetic production in dyslexia. Whereas individual differences in speech sound perception were linked to native and foreign speech sound production in typical readers, this remains to be explored in dyslexia. Given the phonetic processing deficits frequently encountered in dyslexia, we aimed to pinpoint potential differences in the acoustic realization of native phonemic production in adults with dyslexia. Methods: Ten adults with dyslexia and t

Letter Position Dyslexia in Fingerspelling: Similar Error Patterns in Reading Written and Fingerspelled Words.

Letter position dyslexia is a deficit in letter position encoding in the orthographic-visual analysis stage. We report here the first cases of deaf signers who show letter position dyslexia in both written and fingerspelled words. Their error pattern was identical in the two modes of presentation, written and fingerspelled: in both modes, they had almost only within-word letter transpositions; their transpositions involved middle letters and almost never exterior letters; they had errors of doubled letters; and their errors occurred almost only in migratable words. They showed no transposition

The Cortico-Cortical and Subcortical Circuits of the Human Brain Language Centers Including the Dual Limbic and Language Functioning Fiber Tracts.

Background/Objectives: In recent years, MRI-based diffusion-weighted tractography techniques have uncovered additional white matter pathways that have significant roles in language processing and production. In this review, we aim to outline the major language centers of the brain and major language pathways along with association tracts that serve dual roles in both the language and limbic systems. According to the current dual-stream model of language processing, the brain's language network is organized into a dorsal stream, responsible for mapping sound to articulation, and a ventral strea

Eye-Tracking-Based Interventions for School-Age Specific Learning Disorders: A Narrative Review of Functional Assessment and Gaze-Contingent Training.

Eye tracking (ET) provides process-level indices of how students sample task-relevant information during core academic activities. In school-age learners (6-18 years) with specific learning disorders (SLDs; dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia), ET can complement behavioural assessment by quantifying oculomotor patterns linked to decoding, model-production coordination, and stepwise strategy execution. This narrative review synthesises ET findings in SLD across reading, handwriting/copying, and arithmetic and translates them into an applied framework for school-oriented use. We summarise key

Development and item selection of the language and dyslexia screening questionnaire in primary care settings.

PURPOSE: The study's purpose was to develop and select items for a caregiver-completed screening tool to assess children for dyslexia and developmental language disorder (DLD). METHOD: Participants were recruited from community centers, schools and pediatric offices. Caregivers clicked a QR code on a flyer to access the consent and questionnaire, or contacted the research assistant to access them, and completed the screening measure designed to assess the risk of DLD and dyslexia. Then, children completed a gold-standard battery that included language, reading, phonological awareness, rapid n

AI Chatbots and Dyslexia: How AI Chatbots Empower Students With Dyslexia to Master Arithmetic Word Problems.

This study examined the impacts of an AI chatbot intervention for improving arithmetic word-problem-solving among Chinese primary students with dyslexia and explored how different types of motivation moderated these effects. Eighty-three students diagnosed with dyslexia were recruited and randomly assigned to either an AI chatbot-assisted learning condition or a traditional instruction control group. Over 6 weeks, the experimental AI chatbot group received adaptive, multisensory, and individually tailored support for arithmetic word problems. Results revealed that the Chatbot group witnessed s

Microstructural abnormalities in the ATR and VOF underlie tone awareness deficits in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia: a DTI study.

OBJECTIVE: Tone awareness is crucial for reading in Chinese children, significantly affecting those with developmental dyslexia (DD). This paper identifies microstructural abnormalities in the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF), uncinate fasciculus (UF), anterior thalamic radiation (ATR), and vertical occipital fasciculus (VOF) in Chinese children with DD and evaluates their potential relationships with tone awareness and DD. METHODS: 35 children with DD and 64 typically developing (TD) children were recruited from Guangdong Province, China. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) measured me

An Examination of Task-Evoked fMRI Data Processing in Functional Connectivity.

Although functional connectomics typically relies on resting-state fMRI, its analytical methods have been applied to task fMRI data in the investigation of broader involvements of brain regions even if inactive during a specific task. The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of inferring a true resting-state connectivity from task-fMRI data and to investigate the impact of connectomic-based analysis on behavioral trait studies. To this purpose, subjects underwent two visual fMRI tasks. The Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependent (BOLD) time-series were processed to get both a "task" conditi

The neurodivergent blood donor: Fairness, discrimination, screening, and behavior.

BACKGROUND: We broaden the ongoing drive to diversify blood donor panels by proposing and testing a framework to explore neurodivergence and blood donation. Drawing on a range of theoretical perspectives, we predict that neurodivergent people will be underrepresented in donor panels, donate less frequently, perceive donor selection as less fair and more discriminatory, be more likely to guess when answering screening questions, and find these questions upsetting. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: 4376 members of the UK general-public and 8668 NHSBT blood donors indicated if they had a formal or self-

Identifying dyslexia-consistent reading profiles in mild intellectual disability: cluster-derived severity gradients and severity-calibrated classification rules.

INTRODUCTION: Translating dyslexia constructs to mild intellectual disability (MID) is challenging because population-based cut-offs may label broadly expected low attainment as 'specific'. This study combined person-centered profiling with explicit, ICD-11-guided, severity-calibrated classification rules to quantify when and why over-identification occurs in MID. METHODS: Nationwide diagnostic data from 446 students with MID were analyzed using age-normed sten scores from the SB6/18 battery (decoding, reading fluency, reading comprehension, phonetic coding, rapid automatized naming [RAN]). Primitive reflexes as candidate quantitative readouts of hierarchical inhibitory control across the lifespan.

Primitive reflexes are typically inhibited during normal neurodevelopment as cortical and subcortical inhibitory systems mature. However, persistent or incompletely integrated primitive reflexes have been observed in neurodevelopmental conditions including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, developmental coordination difficulties, sensory-processing-related presentations, and delayed speech and language development. Re-emergence of primitive reflexes has also been reported in aging and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Based on

Eye movement measures of word-level and text-level fluency in disordered reading: A comparison of schizophrenia and dyslexia.

Deficits in language processing, executive functioning, and oculomotor control have been extensively reported in schizophrenia, all of which are crucial for skilled reading. However, only recently have studies identified reading impairments in schizophrenia, including more effortful eye movement reading behaviour relative to controls. Notably, similar deficits across these domains have also been reported in dyslexia (reviewed in Whitford et al., 2018). Given this overlap in reading-related systems, a recent eye-tracking study from our group directly compared global (sentence-level) reading beh

Beyond phonology: Independent and moderating effects of visual-spatial skills on dyslexia classification in a transparent orthography.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is primarily attributed to phonological processing deficits, but visual-spatial processing may also shape individual variability. Relatively few studies have examined whether discrete CHC-based visual-spatial indicators provide incremental and conditional information for dyslexia classification beyond phonological and RAN-based predictors, particularly in transparent orthographies. This study tested whether visual-spatial indicators have independent and moderating effects on dyslexia classification in a transparent orthography, within a moderation (risk × protection

Are teachers' knowledge of dyslexia, perceived teaching ability and warmth during teaching related to Chinese students' reading development?

BACKGROUND: Teachers' characteristics have been linked to their students' reading development. However, previous research has primarily focused on the early phase of reading development in Western societies. AIMS: We examined the associations between teachers' knowledge of dyslexia, perceived ability to teach reading and warmth during teaching and Chinese students' reading development across primary grades. SAMPLE: Fifty-four Chinese language arts teachers and their 1517 students in Grades 1 to 5 (mean age = 8.63 years, SD = 1.39, 51.2% female) participated in the study. METHOD: The teacher

Reading and Writing Profiles in Twice-Exceptional Adolescents with Intellectual Giftedness and Dyslexia.

This study provides empirical evidence on the reading and writing profile of adolescents with twice-exceptionality (2e), specifically those presenting both intellectual giftedness and dyslexia (G-D). Using a quantitative approach, the performance of the G-D group was compared with that of gifted students without dyslexia (G) and students with dyslexia without intellectual giftedness (D) in a sample of Spanish secondary school students. The results indicate that G-D adolescents exhibit a heterogeneous performance pattern across literacy-related measures, characterized by relative weaknesses in

Executive Function Profiles in ADHD and Dyslexia: A Mixed-Method Neurocognitive Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Executive function (EF) impairments are common in neurodevelopmental disorders but are often examined using group-level approaches that may overlook clinically meaningful cognitive heterogeneity. This study explored EF heterogeneity in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), developmental dyslexia, and comorbid presentations using a clinically grounded mixed-method approach. Methods: Standardized neuropsychological data from the NEPSY-II, WISC-IV, and Woodcock-Johnson IV batteries were integrated with a case-based thematic synthesis of 11 clinical
