Assessment of the underlying causes of adult deaths using a short version of verbal autopsy in Xaiyabouli Province, Lao People's Democratic Republic.

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, it is difficult to collect the data of the underlying cause of death (UCOD), especially when a death does not occur in a health facility. This study aimed to develop a short version of verbal autopsy (VA) and identify the UCOD of adults in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). METHODS: A short version of VA for deaths outside health facilities was developed. This study included all deaths of people aged 15 years old or older in Xaiyabouli Province in 2020. Socio-demographic factors, place of death, and UCOD of the deceased were collected from health

Major Causes of Death among Older Adults after the Great East Japan Earthquake: A Retrospective Study.

This retrospective study investigated the 3-year impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) of 2011 on deaths due to neoplasm, heart disease, stroke, pneumonia, and senility among older adults in the primarily affected prefectures compared with other prefectures, previous investigations having been more limited as regards mortality causes and geographic areas. Using death certificates issued between 2006 and 2015 (n = 7,383,253), mortality rates (MRs) and risk ratios (RRs) were calculated using a linear mixed model with the log-transformed MR as the response variable. The model included

Epigenetics of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases are multifactorial, chronic, continuous, relapsing, and immune-mediated diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. It has been believed that mechanisms underlying inflammatory bowel diseases include genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and altered immune response to the gut microbiome. The epigenetic modulation takes place via chromatin modifications, including phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation, sumoylation, and ubiquitination. The methylation levels of colonic tissue were found well correlated to blood samples in inflammatory bowel diseases. Moreover

The Olfactory Bulb in Companion Animals-Anatomy, Physiology, and Clinical Importance.

The Olfactory Bulb is a component of the Olfactory System, in which it plays an essential role as an interface between the peripheral components and the cerebral cortex responsible for olfactory interpretation and discrimination. It is in this element that the first selective integration of olfactory stimuli occurs through a complex cell interaction that forwards the received olfactory information to higher cortical centers. Considering its position in the organizational hierarchy of the olfactory system, it is now known that changes in the Olfactory Bulb can lead to olfactory abnormalities. T

Attributed causes of excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic in a south Indian city.

Globally, excess deaths during 2020-21 outnumbered documented COVID-19 deaths by 9.5 million, primarily driven by deaths in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with limited vital surveillance. Here we unravel the contributions of probable COVID-19 deaths from other changes in mortality related to pandemic control measures using medically-certified death registrations from Madurai, India-an urban center with well-functioning vital surveillance. Between March, 2020 and July, 2021, all-cause deaths in Madurai exceeded expected levels by 30% (95% confidence interval: 27-33%). Although driven

How proximal femur fracture patients aged 65 and older fare in survival and cause of death 5+ years after surgery: A long-term follow-up.

Although the incidence of proximal femur fractures (PFFs) is increasing, few detailed reports on associated long-term outcomes and causes of death exist. We aimed to evaluate long-term outcomes and causes of death ≥5 years after surgical treatment of PFFs. This retrospective study included 123 patients (18 males, 105 females) with PFFs treated at our hospital between January 2014 and December 2016. Cases (median age: 90 [range, 65-106] years) comprised 38 femoral neck fractures (FNFs) and 85 intertrochanteric fractures (IFs). Surgical procedures included bipolar head arthroplasty (n = 35), scr

Effects of Senility on Disease Burden: Panel Analysis Using 2010 to 2019 OECD Health Data.

BACKGROUND: In this study, the geniatric status of OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries was measured, and the effects of aging status on disease patterns in each country were quantitatively assessed. A theoretical model explaining the effects was suggested, and the implications were discussed. METHODS: Data used in this study were the OECD Health Statistics data and WHO Global Burden of Disease data. The values for each country were paired with disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) presented by the WHO and Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).

Prevalence of Clostridioides difficile in dogs (Canis familiaris) with gastrointestinal disorders in Rio de Janeiro.

UNLABELLED: Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI) have a high morbidity and mortality rate and have always been considered a nosocomial disease. Nonetheless, the number of cases of community-acquired CDI is increasing, and new evidence suggests additional C. difficile reservoirs exist. Pathogenic C. difficile strains have been found in livestock, domestic animals, and meat, so a zoonotic transmission has been proposed. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to isolate C. difficile strains in dogs at a veterinary clinic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and characterize clinical and pathological f

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mortality trends in Japan: a reversal in 2021? A descriptive analysis of national mortality data, 1995-2021.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in mortality in most countries in 2020, deviating from prior decreasing trends. In Japan, however, mortality was suggested to decrease in 2020. This study investigated long-term mortality trends and cause-specific contributions, focusing on the period of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. DESIGN: We analysed Japanese age-standardised mortality rates (ASMRs) from 1995 to 2021 using vital statistics. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The cause-specific annual ASMR changes were calculated in comparison with the previous year over the abovementioned period.

Place of death from dementia as an underlying cause during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan: a cross-sectional study from national death certificates.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has challenged palliative end-of-life care for people with dementia. The site of death can be considered as an end-of-life care quality indicator. Most people with dementia prefer to die at nursing or private homes; however, in Japan, they are often hospitalized in psychiatric hospitals for management of neuropsychiatric symptoms. As palliative end-of-life care for older adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias has been further challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, little is known about its effects on the place of death in pat

A rare case of primary hepatic poorly differentiated leiomyosarcoma in a goat.

A 12-year-old Saanen goat presented with a history of hyporexia and sudden recumbency. Euthanasia was indicated due to suspicion of hepatic neoplasia associated with senility. Necropsy revealed generalized oedema and increased liver size and weight (33 × 38 × 17 cm and 10.6 kg, respectively), with a firm, multilobular mass. Fusiform to polygonal neoplastic cells, with marked pleomorphism, anisocytosis and anisokaryosis, were seen on histopathological examination of the hepatic mass. The neoplastic cells were immunohistochemically positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin and vimentin but immunone

Memantine administration prevented chorea movement in Huntington's disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by personality changes (such as irritability and restlessness) and psychotic symptoms (such as hallucinations and delusions). When the personality changes become noticeable, involuntary movements (chorea) also develop. The disease is caused by the CAG repeat expansion in the coding region of the HTT gene, and the diagnosis is based on the presence of this expansion. However, there is currently no effective treatment for the progression of Huntington's disease and its involuntary motor symptoms. Herein, w

Choking in patients with neurological disorders and role of drug-induced dysphagia.

Choking is a type of asphyxia due to the internal obstruction of airways by foreign material, quite always food. Most choking deaths are accidental and occur so quickly that may mimic a heart attack. This scenario is also known as "Cafè coronary syndrome" or "bolus death". At autopsy, pieces of under-chewed food are commonly lodged at, above, or in the tracheal space adjacent to the laryngeal inlet. In these fatal events mechanisms other than asphyxia can be also involved, such as a vasovagal episode (by stimulation of the autonomic nerve plexus of the laryngeal inlet) or swallowing impairment

National trends in the proportion of in-hospital deaths by cause of death among older adults with long-term care: a nationwide observational study in Japan from 2007 to 2017.

BACKGROUND: Japan has promoted end-of-life care at home and in long-term care facilities, and the total proportion of in-hospital deaths has decreased recently. However, the difference in trends of in-hospital deaths by the cause of death remains unclear. We investigated the variation in trends of in-hospital deaths among older adults with long-term care from 2007 to 2017, by cause of death and place of care. METHODS: Using the national long-term care insurance registry, long-term care claims data, and national death records, we identified people aged 65 years or older who died between 2007 a
