Phytochemical analysis and antihyperglycemic activity of Carissa grandiflora leaves extract on streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice.

Diabetes mellitus (DM), a prevalent metabolic condition that impairs glucose metabolism, causes morbidity and hospitalization. Thus, there is need to establish novel therapeutics against DM. The current study examined the phytochemical analysis and antidiabetic effects of Carissa grandiflora leave extracts (CGLE) on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced DM in mice. CGLE (n-hexane, chloroform, ethanol) was extracted and phytochemically examined for primary and secondary metabolites. Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) detected functional groups, while 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) te

Autoimmune gastritis as an unexpected cause of diarrhea in a young adult with type I diabetes: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a lifelong diagnosis that involves immune-mediated damage of pancreatic beta cells and subsequent hyperglycemia, manifesting as: polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, and weight loss. Treatment of type 1 diabetes centers on insulin administration to replace or supplement the body's own insulin with the goal of achieving euglycemia and preventing or minimizing complications. Patients with T1DM are at risk for developing other autoimmune conditions, most commonly thyroid or celiac disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old African American female with T

Investigation of side effects to treatment and cause of death in 63 Scandinavian dogs suffering from meningoencephalitis of unknown origin: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Meningoencephalitis of unknown origin is a common cause of severe neurological disease in dogs. The term covers a heterogeneous group of noninfectious inflammatory diseases, with immune dysregulation widely accepted as the underlying disease mechanism. Current treatment consists of immunosuppression, with corticosteroids being the mainstay of virtually all treatment regimens. However, side effects of corticosteroids can be severe, and might be the cause of death in some patients. This retrospective, multi-centric study aimed at describing a population of Scandinavian dogs with meni

Clinical-demographic markers for improving diabetes mellitus diagnosis in people with tuberculosis in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) control is threatened by an increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), particularly in endemic countries. Screening for DM is not routinely implemented in Tanzania; therefore, we aimed to screen for DM at TB diagnosis using clinical-demographic markers. METHODS: Our cross-sectional study recruited TB patients who received anti-TB treatment between October 2019 and September 2020 at health care facilities in three regions from Tanzania. Patients were screened for DM using DM symptoms (polydipsia, polyphagia and polyuria) and random blood glucose (RBG) testin

Type 1 diabetes mellitus in pediatric age group: A rising endemic.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is the most common endocrinological abnormality found in children. The incidence of T1DM has steadily increased in nearly all parts of the world. Both genetic susceptibility and environmental factors contribute to the pathogenesis. It is caused due to either decreased or absent insulin production in the body due to multiple etiologies. We have done a literature review of type 1 DM in children and a clinical audit of point prevalence of type 1 DM cases & its clinical correlates of patients presenting at the tertiary level hospital, AIIMS Rishikesh, over two years six mo

Insulin Resistance in Experimental Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Experimental type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) was induced in rats by daily intraperitoneal injections of alloxan in a dose of 90 mg/kg for 4 days. For verification of insulin resistance, insulin tolerance test was performed in 2 weeks and the glucose utilization rate constant (KITT) was calculated. The rats demonstrated the main symptoms of T1DM: hypoinsulinemia, hyperglycemia, ketonemia, glucosuria, ketonuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, weight loss, and insulin resistance, as evidenced by a decrease in KITT. The serum content of free fatty acids and triacylglycerols significantly increased. The c

Investigation of antidiabetic properties of shikonin by targeting aldose reductase enzyme: In silico and in vitro studies.

Diabetes is a complicated multifactorial disorder in which the patient generally observes polyphagia, polydipsia, and polyuria due to uncontrolled growth in blood sugar levels. For its management, the pharmaceutical industry is working day and night to find a better drug with no or least toxicity. That's why nowadays a more focused branch is to use herbal phytoconstituents for its prevention. Shikonin is a naphthoquinone natural dye that is isolated from the plants of the Boraginaceae family and has proven its role as an anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-gonadotrophic agent. Successful medical management of diabetic ketoacidosis at first presentation in a child with type 1 diabetes: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is considered to be a common presentation of type 1 diabetes mellitus in children. It occurs when absolute or relative insulin insufficiency prevents glucose from entering the cells for use as metabolic fuel, causing the liver to quickly break down fat into ketones for use as fuel source. As a result, ketones are overproduced, accumulating in the blood and urine making the blood acidic. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4 years and 8 months old child presented with the complaint of abdominal pain and vomiting along with polyurea, polydipsia and poly
