Laparoscopic versus open surgery for pediatric hepatic cystic echinococcosis in endemic regions: a meta-analysis supporting minimally invasive management.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic cystic echinococcosis (HCE) imposes a significant health burden on children in endemic regions. This meta-analysis compares perioperative outcomes between laparoscopic (LS) and open surgery (OS) for pediatric HCE to inform surgical management strategies. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP for studies (February 2019-April 2024) comparing LS and OS in children with HCE. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed quality using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Pooled analysis was performed

First molecular identification of Spirometra erinaceieuropaei, Ligula intestinalis, and Taenia hydatigena infecting wildlife canine and avian hosts from the Astrakhan Region, Russia.

Wild animals play a crucial role as maintenance and reservoir hosts for parasitic diseases that can affect both human and animal populations. This study aimed to identify and molecularly characterize three cestodes infecting wild canid and avian hosts in the Astrakhan Region, Russia. Intestinal samples were collected from fifty carcasses, including 11 Nyctereutes procyonoides (N. procyonoides), 23 Canis aureus (C. aureus) as mammal hosts, and 16 Ardea cinerea (A. cinerea) as avian hosts, collected from roadkill or animals culled by predators in forests. The collected cestodes were thoroughly r

Prevalence and molecular genotyping of cystic echinococcosis among Buffalo isolates from South-Punjab, Pakistan.

Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.), the causative agent of cystic echinococcosis (CE) cause enormous health, production, and economic impacts on livestock and human population. Buffaloes play a central role in Pakistan's livestock economy, and often serve as key intermediate hosts in the transmission of E. granulosus s.l. However, little is known about CE in buffaloes and associated productive and financial risks in southern Punjab, Pakistan. Out of 1689 buffaloes (male-678, female-1011), 256 were found infected (95%CI = 13.45-16.87), with a 15.16% prevalence (X2 = 30.30). Samples prima

Molecular characterization and functional effect on canie peripheral blood mononuclear cells of phosphoglycerate kinase from Echinococcus granulosus.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), a major zoonotic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus, poses significant global health challenges. Definitive hosts are crucial for its transmission and control, yet the immune interactions between E. granulosus and these hosts are not well understood. Research indicates that the parasite’s phosphoglycerate kinase might play a role in immune regulation, though the specifics are unclear. To explore this, the gene’s open reading frame was cloned and analyzed with bioinformatics, and the PGK protein was produced using prokaryotic expression technology. The protein

Large Hydatid Cyst in the Cardiac Interventricular Septum: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic disease with a high incidence in pastoral areas in Tibet. The heart is an uncommon location of echinococcosis, and involvement of the interventricular septum is even rarer. This disease can remain asymptomatic for a long time, but may result in cardiac tamponade and sudden death. We report a 58-year-old woman who was diagnosed with a giant cardiac hydatid cyst involving the interventricular septum associated with complete right bundle branch block. However, owing to insufficient treatment, spontaneous rupture of the cardiac hydatid cyst occurred 6 months after di

Changes in gene regulation are associated with the evolution of resistance to a novel parasite.

INTRODUCTION: Host-parasite interactions are ubiquitous and are important drivers of host diversification and evolution. In particular, host immune systems are frequent targets of parasite-driven selection. The resulting rapid evolution of immune genes is usually framed as an ongoing 'arms race' between a co-evolving pair of host and parasite species. However, immune evolution may often be driven by the acquisition of a new and unfamiliar parasite. For instance, when marine populations of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) colonized freshwater lakes approximately 12,000 years ago,

Recent advances in clinical and laboratory diagnosis of hydatid cyst: from imaging to recombinant and nanobiosensor-based approaches.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis is a significant parasitic disease that predominantly affects the liver and lungs in humans. Its diagnosis relies mainly on imaging techniques such as ultrasound and computed tomography, supported byserological tests, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunoblotting, which are commonly used inhuman serodiagnosis. Conventional serological assays frequently show variable sensitivity, particularly in pulmonary, inactive, or calcified cysts, and may yield false-negative or cross-reactive results. METHODS: Recent advances in recombinant antigen-based

Small particles of Echinococcus granulosus (spegs) and Echinococcus multilocularis (spems) promote follicular T helper cell expansion and are associated with IgE and IgG4 class switching in human lymph nodes.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) and alveolar echinococcosis (AE) are zoonotic diseases caused by the larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis. Prior studies have identified small particles from the outer layer of parasitic lesions termed spegs (from E. granulosus) and spems (from E. multilocularis), which appear to interact with the human immune system, leading to lymph node enlargement. METHODS: We analyzed lymph nodes from CE (n = 3) and AE (n = 3) patients by immunohistochemical staining for spegs/spems and CD57. Automated image analysis revealed a significantl
