Cognitive and Mental Health in Recently Retired Collegiate Football Players: Findings from the CARE Consortium.

BACKGROUND: While long-term psychosocial health in football players has been extensively studied, little is known about cognitive and mental health during early sport retirement. This study examined the association between football participation factors and self-reported cognitive and mental health among recently retired collegiate players. METHODS: Participants in the Concussion Assessment, Research, and Education (CARE) Consortium (n = 627; mean age = 25.0 ± 1.7) completed surveys across 26 United States universities (2014-2021) within 5 years of collegiate exit. Measures included Quality o

Symptoms, Sensorimotor Function, and Recovery Time Following Law Enforcement Combatives.

INTRODUCTION: Law enforcement cadets (LECs) complete training that prepares them for the hardest parts of their job. Subsequently, this training can involve possible head impacts (i.e., head acceleration events [HAEs]). There is limited information regarding the effect of these HAEs on acute sensorimotor function or methods that can attenuate the negative consequences of HAEs sustained in training. To fill these gaps, we conducted 2 sequential experiments. Experiment 1 examined the effects of HAEs on symptoms and sensorimotor function in LECs undergoing defensive tactics training. Experiment 2

Glass intraocular foreign body removal assisted by biological amniotic membrane: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The extraction of large, sharp-edged nonmagnetic intraocular foreign bodies carries risks of iatrogenic retinal injury with conventional instruments. Biological amniotic membrane is known to be safe for intraocular use, but its application as a protective wrap to remove a foreign body has not been reported to our knowledge. We describe this novel approach. CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his forties presented with blurred vision and a retained intraocular glass fragment (5 × 3 × 1 mm) in the left eye, with visual acuity of 20/32. During vitrectomy, attempts to mobilize the sharp fragm

Self-Subcutaneous Injection of Elemental Mercury: A Report of a Rare Case From Pakistan.

Deliberate subcutaneous injection of mercury by a mentally healthy individual is rare. It has been frequently reported in individuals with severe depressive disorders during suicide attempts, as well as among athletes seeking performance enhancement and in certain contexts related to sexual gratification. Here, we present the case of a 28-year-old male patient who deliberately self-injected mercury subcutaneously into his abdomen that led to the formation of a painful induration/abscess in the midline of the abdomen. X-ray of the abdomen showed multiple subcutaneous radio-opaque deposits. A su

Silicone Oil-Assisted Removal of Large Intraocular Foreign Bodies.

PURPOSE: To describe a silicone oil-assisted technique for removal of large intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) through an enlarged sclerotomy. METHODS: Description of the surgical technique in two pediatric patients with large posterior-segment IOFBs. RESULTS: Two pediatric patients had large IOFBs, one involving the macular area and the other in the subretinal space. Because of the size of the IOFBs, an air/silicone oil (SO) exchange was performed before extraction. An enlarged sclerotomy was created, and the IOFB was removed with retinal forceps in one case and an external magnet in the ot

Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy Evaluation of a Retinal Explant Model of Iron Intraocular Foreign Body Injury.

Iron intraocular foreign body (IOFB) can cause retinal damage, which may be related to the release, transfer, and tissue infiltration of iron particles. Sustained retinal impairment may occur after surgical removal of an iron IOFB, while direct in situ evidence of residual retinal iron deposition remains limited. A retinal explant model combined with regional scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to examine retinal morphology and elemental distribution after iron foreign body exposure and removal. SEM analysis showed that, in the Fe group, the retinal

Behavioral hyperactivity and hippocampal mitochondrial dysfunction following recurrent concussions in young mice.

Although traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly recurrent concussions during adolescence, is strongly associated with post-traumatic hyperactivity, the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in driving this behavioral alteration remains poorly understood and insufficiently characterized. In this context, we investigated the effects of varying frequencies of recurrent concussions on exploratory behavior, hippocampal mitochondrial bioenergetics, and nitrosative stress in adolescent male Swiss mice (32 days old) subjected to a weight-drop model over 10 days and allocated to Control, 4, 7, and 10-c

Zwitterionic Topological Hydrogel Coatings for Robust Mitigation of the Foreign Body Response.

Implantable medical devices are prone to foreign body response (FBR) during long-term use. Zwitterionic materials have attracted significant attention for their excellent antifouling properties and have been applied to implantable devices to enhance immunocompatibility. However, in vivo studies have yielded inconsistent results regarding their effectiveness as anti-FBR surface coatings. In this study, three types of zwitterionic poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) coatings, including PMB30 copolymers, polymer brushes constructed via ATRP (atom transfer radical polymerization)

18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT in Tuberculosis and Other Granulomatous Diseases (except Sarcoidosis and Fungal Disease).

Granulomatous inflammation consists mainly of activated macrophages, epithelioid cells, and lymphocytes, which have high glucose metabolism and therefore show increased 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) uptake on PET/computed tomography (CT). This makes FDG PET/CT useful in detecting and mapping granulomatous disease, including clinically silent or extrapulmonary involvement. It is particularly crucial in tuberculosis, where it can help identify active disease, guide biopsy, assess treatment response, and detect dissemination. FDG PET/CT also has applications in granulomatous vasculitis such as

Pediatric abusive head trauma: A nursing call to action.

Pediatric abusive head trauma (AHT) is the leading cause of death from physical child abuse in the United States. The term "pediatric AHT" replaced the former descriptor, "shaken baby syndrome," to include all nonaccidental head injuries. AHT can present with a wide range of symptoms that are often vague, including lethargy, vomiting, and irritability, leading to missed diagnoses. Various clinical decision tools assist in the efficient and accurate detection of AHT. Nurses play a pivotal and opportune role in the prevention, screening, and education. This article discusses the risk factors, cl

Reattach-Informed Integrated Occupational Therapy In Persistent Post-Concussion Syndrome: A Pilot Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: Persistent post-concussion syndrome (PCS) affects a substantial proportion of individuals after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Persistent symptoms may reflect functional dysregulation - including altered autonomic and sensory processing - rather than irreversible structural damage. This pilot case series explored the feasibility and preliminary outcomes of a ReAttach-informed integrated occupational therapy protocol on symptom severity, perceived stress, and functional participation. METHOD: Ten adults with post-concussion symptoms persisting more than six weeks post-injury re

Non-invasive neuromodulation after repetitive head impacts: current evidence and a precision framework for circuit-based rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive head impacts (RHIs) are associated with heterogeneous cognitive, behavioral, psychiatric, sleep-related, pain, and neurological symptoms. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) remains a postmortem neuropathological diagnosis, whereas traumatic encephalopathy syndrome (TES) is a clinical research syndrome assessed during life. No intervention has been shown to modify CTE pathology, but neuromodulation may support the surviving neural circuits. AREAS COVERED: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar were searched from database inception to August 2026

Electrophysiological Monitoring of Multifurcated Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve With Motor Multibranches.

Extralaryngeal bifurcation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is common anatomical variation, but the multifurcation of the RLN with more than three branches is quite rare. Intraoperative neuromonitoring evaluating functional status of the nerve branches shows that the branched RLN may have functional variation. Identification and electrophysiological monitoring of the RLN can localize motor fibers within nerve branches and help preserve motor function.
