Facial structures and fracture patterns change with aging; however, the relationship between midfacial skeletal aging and fracture distribution remains unclear. We retrospectively analyzed clinical records and computed tomography scans of 186 patients with facial trauma (aged 1-90 years). Among patients with fractures (n = 117), nasal fractures were significantly and independently associated with younger age ( P = 0.023), whereas zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures were significantly and independently associated with older age ( P = 0.039). In patients without facial fractures (n = 69), the

Studies on long-term outcomes of biodegradable versus titanium osteosynthesis in maxillofacial surgery are lacking. This multicentre randomized controlled trial was performed to compare the long-term clinical performance of titanium versus biodegradable osteosynthesis systems at ≥15 years of follow-up. Patients undergoing bilateral sagittal split and/or Le Fort I osteotomies, or treatment for mandible, maxilla, or zygoma fractures at four hospitals were included. Eligible participants (n = 230) were randomly assigned to receive titanium (KLS Martin) or biodegradable (Inion CPS) plates and scre

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. 'The isolation and genetic analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans… X-chromosome balancer' by András Fodor and Péter Deak, of the Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary. This retrospective study evaluates the survival rates, complications, and patient satisfaction associated with zygomatic implants in severe maxillary atrophy, focusing on 2 approaches: Quad Zygoma (4 zygomatic implants) and Hybrid Zygoma (2 zygomatic and 2 standard implants). A total of 76 patients classified as Cawood Grade VI, treated between 2007 and 2021, were included in this study. The primary outcome measure assessed was implant survival rate, while secondary outcomes included complications, patient satisfaction, and willingness to undergo the procedure again. The study included 69 pati

Panfacial trauma involves concurrent injuries to the upper (frontal), mid-face (maxilla, zygoma, nose), and lower (mandible) thirds of the face. This creates a significant threat to airway patency due to anatomical distortion, bleeding, edema, and the risk of aspiration. Airway management in panfacial trauma is complex and requires a strategic, individualized approach. Any error in this process may lead to considerable morbidity and mortality in both prehospital and hospital settings and can also complicate subsequent fracture reconstruction. Rapid and appropriate airway control is crucial to

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Because of the wide anatomic variations among individuals, the differences between procedures for placing zygomatic implants (ZIs) and between zygomatic and regular implants, the biomechanics of ZI in the restoration of an atrophic maxilla are not yet well known.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this finite element analysis (FEA) study was to critically review and clarify the biomechanical principles of the ZIs based on clinical reality.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two FEA models were created representing the most frequent anatomic situations for the posterior atrophic maxilla: zygoma

Background Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma is a significant problem in the United States, with estimated costs of nearly one billion dollars annually. Facial fractures occur based on factors such as facial structure, the direction and intensity of the impact, and the mechanism of injury. The most frequent facial fractures include the nose, orbits, zygomatic complex, mandible, maxilla, and frontal bone. Additionally, demographic, social, cultural, and environmental factors can contribute to particular trauma mechanisms like falls and motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), leading to different CMF inj

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to develop effective treatment strategies for zygomatic-orbital-maxillary complex (ZOMC) fractures using finite element analysis (FEA) and investigate the mechanical properties and stress distribution of different internal fixators.
METHODS: A three-dimensional (3D) model was created from CT images of a patient with a unilateral ZOMC fracture, and the preinjury craniofacial structure was reconstructed. A cylindrical impactor was used to simulate facial impact. Biomechanical analysis was performed to assess the stability of internal fixation of the fracture li

BACKGROUND: To provide an objective means of outcome assessment, we developed an innovative methodology to evaluate facial symmetry without defining an anatomical midsagittal plane. This study aimed to assess this novel methodology for evaluating zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) symmetry.
METHODS: Patients who underwent ZMC fracture reduction with available postoperative facial computerized tomography (CT) images were included in the study group. The control group comprised patients who underwent facial surgeries unrelated to ZMC fractures and had either pre- or postoperative facial CT image

BACKGROUND: The consequences of maxillofacial injuries are functionals and aesthetics. The initial treatment must lead to consolidation without any sequelae (complete healing with no clinical symptoms). 3D printing is increasingly used in maxillofacial surgery, but data on its use in the initial phase of trauma is scarce. METHOD: We conducted a bibliographic search in PubMed’s electronic database with the following terms: maxillofacial traumatology, maxillofacial fracture, mandible fracture, maxillary fracture, zygoma fracture, LeFort fracture, fracture of the naso-ethmoido-maxillo-fronto-orbi

The zygomatic bone is one of the most prominent bones in the facial region. It forms the most anterolateral projection on each side of the middle face and is articulated with the maxilla, frontal, and temporal bones. Isolated zygomatic arch fractures can occur when a direct force is applied to the zygoma. A variety of intraoral and extraoral techniques have been used as closed reduction techniques for isolated fractures of the zygomatic arch. In this case report, we aim to present our approach for the treatment of a 40-year-old patient with an isolated right zygomatic arch fracture. We used th

This study investigates the impact of helmet use on the incidence of facial fractures in bicycle accidents. Analyzing data from hospitalized bicyclists between 2005 and 2016, the research focused on the correlation between helmet usage and various facial fractures. The study included 1256 bicyclists with known helmet use, among whom 277 individuals (22%) were identified with a total of 521 facial fractures. The findings revealed a significant reduction in the likelihood of facial fractures among helmeted cyclists compared with those without helmets (odds ratio, 0.65; confidence interval, 0.50-

BACKGROUND: Airbags have significantly decreased fatalities in frontal vehicle accidents, but their deployment can lead to more severe injuries and rarely death. The authors present a case of a penetrating injury causing tissue loss in the left cheek, an "explosion" of the zygomatic arch, and facial nerve damage, discussing the management in the contest of literature examining similar injuries in the head and neck region.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reviewing English literature from 1995 to 2023, 9 patients experienced severe airbag-related penetrating head and neck injuries, in 3 cases resulting
