Retrograde horseradish peroxidase transport after oculomotor nerve injury.

We studied the distribution of somatic motor neurons innervating the cat superior rectus 3-6 months after oculomotor nerve injury using intramuscular horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In normal cats, 98% or more of the labelled superior rectus motoneurons were in the contralateral oculomotor subnucleus. Two experimental cats who exhibited little or no evidence of recovery showed few labelled cells (4% of controls) which were distributed in both the ipsilateral and contralateral oculomotor nucleus. The other three experimental cats demonstrated definite signs of recovery, and HRP injections labelle

Qualitative and quantitative ultrastructural observations on retinal ganglion cell layer of rat after intraorbital optic nerve crush.

Rat retinal ganglion cell layer (GCL) was examined ultrastructurally 1-180 days after intraorbital crushing of one optic nerve. It was confirmed quantitatively that axotomized ganglion cells lost cisternal membranes of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and showed disintegration of Nissl bodies and ribosomal rosettes 3 days postoperatively. Between 60 and 180 days after neurotomy there was partial reversion of the RER towards normal. At postoperative intervals of 14-60 days, chromatin aggregation became conspicuous and some nuclei were prominently furrowed and contained electron-dense inclu

Severe visual disturbance after exposure of the optic canal during intranasal ethmosphenoidectomy.

The cause of disturbed visual acuity associated with intranasal ethmosphenoidectomy is, on the one hand, a direct injury to the optic nerve. In this case, the disturbance in visual acuity develops immediately after the operation, and severe visual complications with a poor prognosis are found. On the other hand, in the two cases presented in this paper, the disturbed visual acuity develops postoperatively. In this case, it is necessary to take various possibilities into consideration, such as indirect effects of intraorbital bleeding, and damage to the lamina papyracea due to indirect and dire

Central trochlear palsy.

Historically, the trochlear (IV) nerve has been "neglected" by neurologists and ophthalmologists. However, the reported incidence of trochlear palsy in two large series has more than doubled in the past two decades, indicating increasing awareness of this nerve. Trauma is the most common cause of trochlear palsy, as the trochlear nerve is anatomically more vulnerable to trauma than the other ocular motor nerves. Trochlear palsy can also be caused by vascular and inflammatory diseases, congenital factors, toxic substances and tumors. Diplopia secondary to vertical and horizontal deviation is th

[Importance of intraoperative monitoring of ABR and compound action potential of the eighth cranial nerve during microvascular decompression surgery].

An intraoperative recording of a direct compound action potential of the 8th cranial nerve with pre, intra and postoperative monitorings of auditory brainstem evoked response (ABR) was carried out for the purpose of clarifying mechanism and prevention of postoperative hearing dysfunction following microvascular decompression surgery as a treatment for hyperdysfunction syndrome of cranial nerves. In 221 patients with hemifacial spasm and tic douloureux out of 510 patients operated on by microvascular decompression surgery, ABR was monitored before, during and after surgery and furthermore, in t

[Hypothalamic syndromes after the administration of toxic doses of drugs for terminating pregnancy].

Twenty-five women presented with primary injuries of the hypothalamic area and the hypothalamic syndrome that resulted from the intake of toxic doses of drugs (TDD) for inducing an abortion. The situation was simulated in mature rats. Experiments evidenced a predominant involvement of the hypothalamic area, vs. other portions of the brain. All the patients developed the vegetovascular form of the hypothalamic syndrome, combined with neuroendocrine and thermoregulation disturbances. TDD-induced increase of the vulnerability of the hypothalamus during pregnancy may be explained by structural and

Retrolabyrinthine surgery: anatomy and pathology.

Retrolabyrinthine surgery is done to expose the cerebellopontine angle directly through the ear. It is indicated when the hearing in the ear to be operated upon is useful. The surgical technique entails four steps: complete mastoidectomy, extended posterior exposure of the sigmoid sinus, exposure of the posterior fossa dura, and exposure of the cerebellopontine angle. Retrolabyrinthine exposure of the cerebellopontine angle is indicated in tic douloureux, atypical facial pain, and hemifacial spasm. Recently, this approach has been used for sectioning the vestibular nerve, exploration of the po

Thy-1 in developing nervous tissue.

Thy-1 is a developmentally regulated cell surface glycoprotein, found at high levels in nerve and certain other tissues. In brain its level rises nearly 100-fold during early postnatal development, but until recently the cellular basis of this, or even the distribution of Thy-1 in adult nervous tissue, has been unclear. On the other hand considerable progress has been made in elucidating the gene, and protein and carbohydrate structure of this molecule, so that the basis for its developmental regulation, and possibly its function, is beginning to emerge. In adult nervous tissues Thy-1 appears

[Vestibular neurectomy in Ménière's disease. Results and comments apropos of 77 cases].

The authors report 77 cases of vestibular neurectomy performed between 1972 and 1984 (40 male and 37 female) for incapacitating Meniere's vertigo. Neurectomy was via a sub-petrous (S.P.) approach in 55 cases, by posterior trans-labyrinthine (P.T.L.) approach in 9 and anterior trans-labyrinthine (A.T.L.) in 13 cases. A.T.L. was abandoned because of the frequency of leaks of CSF and of meningitis. The P.T.L. approach did not result in any facial paralysis, even transient. There were 2 CSF leaks, without meningitis and one of which required reoperation. For the 55 S.P. cases, hearing worsened in

Perivascular demyelinization of cochlear neurons in two neonates.

Localized perivascular demyelinization of the peripheral processes of cochlear neurons was observed in surface preparations of the osseous spiral lamina in two neonates, one a premature infant with erythroblastosis fetalis, the other a full-term infant with cyanotic congenital heart disease. In both cases the cause of the demyelinization was unknown. Both infants had severe edema as a result of congestive heart failure and anoxia. The serum bilirubin level in the erythroblastotic child appeared too low to have caused injury to the nerve fibers. The demyelinization was most striking in the lowe

Trismus in postoperative, posttraumatic and other brain stem lesions caused by paradoxical activity of masticatory muscles.

In fifteen cases of brain stem lesions caused by basal tumours, operations, injuries, arteriosclerosis or multiple sclerosis, a paradoxical activity of jaw closing muscles during jaw opening was observed. This inverse activity was the cause of severe trismus in 8 cases. It is the manifestation of a faulty programming of jaw movements in the trigeminal motor area in brain stem. This distinct new brain stem syndrome can only be detected by EMG investigation. EMG findings, pathological background, outcome and treatment possibilities are discussed in this paper.

Afferent influences on brain stem auditory nuclei of the chicken: neuron number and size following cochlea removal.

The consequences of cochlea removal on neuron number and soma cross-sectional area were examined in the second order auditory nucleus (n. magnocellularis) of chickens. Both the age of the subjects at the time of cochlea (basilar papilla) removal (1-66 weeks) and the survival period (1-45 days) were varied. Neuron number and soma cross-sectional area were determined from Nissl stained sections. Additional material was processed to examine the relationship of ganglion cell loss to changes in n. magnocellularis. Neuron number decreased by 25-30% and soma cross-sectional area decreased by 10-20% i

Trigeminal antidromic vasodilatation and plasma extravasation in the rat: effects of acetylcholine antagonists and cholinesterase inhibitors.

Antidromic stimulation of sensory peripheral branches of the trigeminal system (mental nerve) leads to cutaneous vasodilatation and increases vascular permeability in the rat. Antidromic vasodilatation is observed only at high intensity stimulation (10 V, 15 Hz, 0.2 or 5 ms) supporting the participation of afferent C-fibres in cutaneous dilator responses. Both antidromic vasodilatation and neurogenic plasma extravasation are significantly reduced by muscarinic antagonists suggesting that a cholinergic component may be involved in these trigeminal neurogenic responses. Neurogenic plasma extrava

Peripheral nerve grafts to the frog optic tectum: a morphological study of foreign axon regeneration in the central nervous system.

The proximal stump of a transected mandibular nerve was grafted onto the rostrodorsal surface of the optic tectum in adult Rana pipiens to investigate the morphologic characteristics of nonspecific axonal regeneration in a highly organized region of central nervous system (CNS). Within the first 3 weeks postgraft surgery (WPS), the nerve-tectum interface became firmly established. Concomitant with this was an invasion of the host tectum by a small number of fine "pioneerlike" axons from the nerve. By 6 WPS there developed a concerted instreaming of a large number of peripheral fibers. Once wit

Nerve fiber planimetry in acute and chronic nerve lesions and in nerve lesions in continuity.

The level of resection of damaged nerve tissue in acute and chronic nerve lesions was determined on the basis of the vascular structure, the consistency of the nerve during palpation, the amount of interfascicular connective tissue, and the mushroom formation of the fascicles. Intraoperative electrophysiologic recordings were performed on the cut nerve ends to determine the function of the axons. Postoperative planimetric analyses of cross sections made through the resected nerve stumps were performed to measure axonal and endoneural tube diameters and to correlate these results with the clini

Clinical study of the pattern electroretinogram in patients with optic nerve damage.

We have recorded both pattern and flash electroretinograms (ERG) in two patients with unilateral optic nerve damage due to optic canal fracture over one year. The pattern ERG from the affected eye was reduced in amplitude by approximately 40% in one patient, 60% in the other, compared with that from their other, normal eyes, while the flash ERG was normal in all eyes. Reduced pattern ERG responses may depend on retrograde degeneration following damage to the optic nerve. The pattern ERG, however, was not totally lost in the eyes with marked optic atrophy. There is a possibility that the patter

The anatomical consequences of acoustic injury: A review and tutorial.

The anatomic consequences of acoustic overstimulation are explored in this presentation, and attention is directed toward issues where improvements in technology and empirical observation are needed before further advances in our understanding can be achieved. Gains have been made in the last decade in appreciating sound-induced cochlear injury, but there is now a need to evaluate not only cochlear pathology but also the functional state of the surviving structures. There is a wealth of information about the susceptibility of inner or outer hair cells to acoustic injury; however, the etiology

Neurofilament immunoreactivity in developing rat autonomic and sensory ganglia.

Immunoreactivity to neurofilament (NF) antiserum appears early in the development of both the central and peripheral nervous systems of the rat fetus. In 10 somite embryos, positive cell bodies are present in the ventromedial part of anterior rhombencephalic and mesencephalic neural tube. From there the appearance of immunoreactivity spreads cranially to the prosencephalic anlage before closure of the anterior neuropore and caudally following the sequence of neural tube closure. Immunoreactivity increases rapidly in axon bundles of central and peripheral systems, but in immature cell bodies of

The morphology of growth cones of regenerating optic nerve axons.

The morphology of growth cones of regenerating optic nerve axons was examined by light and electron microscopy in adult frogs (Rana pipiens), using a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) fiber-filling method, during early and later phases of regeneration. Optic nerve regeneration was initiated unilaterally by crushing the optic nerve in mid-orbit. Fiber filling was accomplished by severing the affected nerve closer to the eye 24-48 hrs. prior to sacrifice and applying HRP to the central stump. Regenerating axons and their growth cones were observed in the optic nerves, chiasma, tract, pretectal neurop

[Meningopolyneuritis (Garin-Bujadoux, Bannwarth) erythema chronicum migrans disease of the nervous system transmitted by ticks].

The clinical spectrum of this remarkable non-syphilitic spirochaetosis (spirochaeta infection) of the nervous system is described in light of 53 further cases with reference to our earlier description of 47 cases. As the etiological diagnosis is not possible in all cases the knowledge of clinical courses is especially important. Males are affected almost twice as often as women. The disease is especially prevalent in the sixth decade. Usually, the syndrome begins in the warm season with exquisite pain and other sensory irritations in combination with marked malaise.
