BACKGROUND: Immediate implant placement in the posterior mandible is associated with a risk of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury due to anatomical variations such as lingual concavities and variability in mandibular canal positioning. Accurate three-dimensional assessment of these structures is therefore essential.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the root apex-mandibular canal distance (RAC), prevalence and morphology of lingual concavities, and cross-sectional ridge patterns in the posterior mandible to identify high-risk sites for IAN injury during immediate implant placement.

Trigeminal nerve injury can lead to chronic and difficult-to-treat orofacial neuropathic pain. Here, we uncover a key role for the cation channel TRPM3 in the chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (IoN-CCI) mouse model of trigeminal neuropathic pain. Wild-type (WT) mice develop spontaneous pain and mechanical allodynia for up to 6 weeks following IoN-CCI, whereas Trpm3-/- mice do not develop such symptoms. Using longitudinal RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis, we obtain a detailed time course of transcriptome alterations in trigeminal ganglia during progression of the IoN-CCI mo

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) often causes persistent sensory and motor deficits because of incomplete axonal regeneration and insufficient remyelination. Schwann cells (SCs) are essential for peripheral nerve repair, but effective recovery depends on their timely transition from a repair state to a myelinating phenotype.
OBJECTIVE(S): To investigate whether KDM2B-PP1, a bioactive peptide designed to disrupt the interaction between lysine-specific demethylase 2B (KDM2B) and enhancer of zeste homologue 2 (EZH2), promotes SC redifferentiation, remyelination, and functional recovery

BACKGROUND: Microglia remodel neuronal circuits in pathological conditions; however, the molecular requirements for these responses and their consequences for motoneuron survival remain unclear.
METHODS: Aif1 (Iba1) knockout mice were generated using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated deletion, and baseline phenotypes and responses to unilateral facial nerve axotomy were assessed using immunohistochemistry, transmission electron microscopy, and single-nucleus RNA sequencing of the facial motor nucleus. Motoneuron survival and nuclear γH2AX foci were evaluated 28 days post-axotomy.
FINDINGS: Under baseline

BACKGROUND: Left transcervical extrapleural esophageal mobilization can avoid pleural entry and one-lung ventilation but is limited by challenging exposure of the right paratracheal compartment and a relevant risk of left recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury. Prior bilateral transcervical approaches have been constrained by instrument collisions and limited caudal reach.
METHODS: In a fresh-frozen cadaver, a right-first, bilateral transcervical single-port (SP) robotic strategy was performed with sequential right-then-left cervical docking under low-pressure pneumomediastinum. Feasibility e

Peripheral facial nerve defects resulting from oncological resection necessitate early repair, and underscore the need for accurate intraoperative assessment of their extent. This study proposes a span-based classification system for peripheral facial nerve defects, based on the length and location of the defect. The system delineates specific defect characteristics and provides practical guidance for intraoperative decision-making and personalised repair plans.

BACKGROUND: Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) remains a significant concern in thyroid surgery. The inferior thyroid artery (ITA) is frequently used as a landmark. Yet, the RLN-ITA relationship shows substantial anatomical variability, and the non-recurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) represents a rare but high-risk variant. This systematic review and meta-analysis quantified the prevalence of RLN-ITA topographic patterns and NRLN occurrence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A PRISMA-compliant search was performed across major databases up to May 1, 2025. Eligible studies included intraoperative

Functional restoration of vision in adult mammals remains unattainable following complete transection of the optic nerve. In this study, we address this challenge by heterotopically transplanting human retinal organoids into the transection cavity of the optic nerve in adult rats. One month after transplantation, treated animals exhibited partial recovery of visual function, including a direct pupillary light reflex, visually evoked electrophysiological responses, and visually guided behaviors, which were sustained for at least 3 months. Neuroanatomical tracing and three-dimensional imaging re

Background/Objectives: Carotid body paragangliomas, commonly referred to as Carotid Body Tumors (CBTs), are rare, highly vascular paragangliomas arising at the carotid bifurcation and pose significant surgical challenges due to their proximity to critical neurovascular structures. Optimal management remains debated, particularly for large or complex lesions. This study aims to present a structured neurosurgical operative workflow as an educational and practical resource to help young surgeons understand operative decision-making and technical execution from a neurosurgical perspective. Understanding how the central visual system responds to complete optic nerve transection (ONT) is critical for evaluating the feasibility of whole-eye transplantation (WET), as envisioned by the 2024 ARPA-H THETA program. This study evaluates the dynamitic neuronal and synaptic changes within the posterior visual pathway-the superior colliculus (SC), lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), and primary visual cortex (V1)-after optic nerve crush (ONC) and ONT in mice models. Complementary observations were obtained in non-human primates. Both injury models induced time-dependent alterations, but degen

Neurogenic cough is a diagnosis of exclusion characterized by laryngeal hypersensitivity. More common etiologies of chronic cough should be systematically excluded prior to diagnosis. Although the pathophysiology of neurogenic cough is not fully understood, proposed etiologies typically involve injury to the vagus nerve. Treatment options include neuromodulating medications, behavioral cough suppression therapy, and procedures such as superior laryngeal nerve block. Newer targeted treatments, including P2X3 antagonists, may offer effective treatment alternatives moving forward.

Optic nerve injury, encompassing conditions such as glaucoma, optic neuritis, and traumatic optic neuropathy, is a major cause of irreversible vision loss. Traditional broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory treatments have shown limited efficacy, highlighting the need for precision-based therapeutic approaches grounded in the underlying pathological mechanisms. As the primary immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), microglia play a crucial role in regulating neuroinflammation following optic nerve injury. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms governing microglial
