BACKGROUND: Foreign bodies are a common cause of eye pain and tears; however, the majority of cases involve small foreign bodies. Herein, we report a rare case of a large plant-derived foreign body covered with thorns penetrating the conjunctiva into the subconjunctival plica semilunaris following vigorous eye rubbing.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old woman from rural Leshan presented with persistent redness and swelling on the nasal side of her left eye lasting 10 days. The plica semilunaris appeared elevated, congested, and edematous. A sharp plant-derived tip, approximately 1-mm in length,

This case highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of managing pediatric penetrating orbital trauma, especially when the injury is not observed. An 8-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with a laceration of the right upper eyelid after a fall involving a pencil. The initial wound closure was followed by worsening symptoms, including orbital swelling, fever, and vomiting, leading to a suspicion of preseptal cellulitis. Despite intravenous antibiotics and surgical exploration, the condition deteriorated, prompting further investigation. A CT-scan revealed a metallic f

We report a case of a man in his 40s who presented with a swollen optic disc and a metallic intraocular foreign body (IOFB) impacted on the retinal surface of the same eye. The IOFB was removed by vitrectomy and the swelling of the optic nerve slowly resolved. Literature search revealed one previous report of a retained IOFB associated with optic disc swelling as part of an ocular siderosis case series. The possibility that the optic disc swelling in our patient was as a result of a local toxic reaction to the metallic foreign body is discussed.

A 69-year-old man presented to eye casualty for increasing binocular diplopia and a superonasal orbital mass. In 2006, he had an accidental injury to the right eye with a pool cue under the right upper lid. Facial X-ray showed no fractures, and the patient was discharged. Five years later, he developed a cystic lesion at the site of the injury which was excised. In 2023, the mass reappeared causing double vision but was initially ignored. On examination, there was a solid lesion under the right upper lid causing hypoglobus and restriction to elevation. Intraoperatively, the mass was firmly att

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on safety of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with preseptal ferromagnetic foreign bodies.
METHODS: We describe 3 cases of MRI in patients with preseptal ferromagnetic foreign bodies (FFBs) from our institution.
RESULTS: The FFBs were all preseptal, adjacent to the medial canthus (n = 2) and lateral canthus (n = 1). None of the patients had any ocular complications post-MRI. The literature review identified an additional 7 cases with intraocular and preseptal FFBs that underwent MRI. The FFBs ranged in size from 1.0 mm to 3.5 mm. The FFBs were

A male in his early 40s presented with a penetrating orbital injury after a nine-centimetre lead sinker was propelled into his right orbit while fishing. He reported pain, ptosis and visual acuity reduced to light perception. X-rays, preferred over CT due to metallic artefacts, revealed the sinker in the inferior orbital fissure with an intact eyeball. Initial surgical extraction attempts triggered a severe vagal response, necessitating endoscopic navigation for safe removal. Postoperatively, despite an intact globe, he developed vitreous haemorrhage and retinal detachment, requiring vitrectom

PURPOSE: We describe three different approaches for lens management in cases of metallic intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) involving the posterior segment.
METHODS: All consecutive posterior segment metallic IOFB cases from 2012 to 2023 at a single institution were included in this retrospective case series. Surgical outcomes and surgical videos are presented.
RESULTS: A total of 25 metallic IOFB cases were included. In 9 cases, there was no significant lens involvement, therefore, not requiring lens extraction at the time of IOFB removal. In 8 cases with traumatic cataract, lens extraction

This report describes the longest case of a retained metallic intraorbital foreign body with no complications and development of delayed sensory exotropia following traumatic sclopetaria in childhood. A 9-year-old girl suffered a BB gun injury to the left eye, leading to chorioretinitis sclopetaria and loss of vision. The visual acuity was 20/800 with a relative afferent pupillary defect and choroidal rupture with subretinal hemorrhage that evolved to sclopetaria over time. Computed tomography of the orbit demonstrated the BB foreign body. A sensory exotropia of 30 prism diopters developed ove

BACKGROUND: Several previous animal and human studies have found a strong association between asthma and spermatozoa quality, but whether these associations are causal or due to bias remains to be elucidated.
METHODS: We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to assess the causal effect of genetically predicted asthma on the risk of abnormal spermatozoa. Asthma, childhood-onset asthma (COA), and adult-onset asthma (AOA) (sample sizes ranging from 327,670 to 408,442) were included as the exposures. Genetic information for abnormal spermatozoa was obtained from a genome-wi

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the use of urology retractable three-pronged grasping forceps in the removal of a large, round, and nonmagnetic intraocular foreign body (IOFB) that was difficult to remove with other surgical instruments.
METHODS: Extraction of a 3.0 mm lead shot pellet embedded in vitreous hemorrhage was attempted with multiple surgical instruments including an intraocular magnet, IOFB forceps, and two tools designed for urology stone removal: a three-pronged grasping forceps and a nitinol basket extractor.
RESULTS: Owing to the round and smooth surface, large size, and nonmagnetic

PURPOSE: The intraocular lens blocking technique described for the removal of intraocular foreign bodies emerged as a result of an effort to prevent the foreign body from being retracted into the posterior segment because of the resistance encountered while removing it from the corneal incision. However, in the technique described, in addition to the difficulty of the surgical procedure, the new concern is to create a posterior capsulorhexis according to the size of the foreign body and to pass the foreign body through the capsulorhexis.
METHODS: Here, the authors describe a new approach to t

The incidence of penetrating orbital injuries from writing instruments continues to rise in the pediatric population. Such injuries can cause significant visual morbidity and have a lifelong psychosocial impact. While the description of graphite pencil-related orbital trauma management is well demonstrated with over 40 reported cases, a lack of consistent management protocol for colored pencil-related injuries. Here, we report an inadvertent penetrating orbital colored pencil injury with progressive mechanical ptosis and pre-septal cellulitis necessitating urgent orbitotomy, debridement, and w

Transorbital penetrating brain injuries (TOPI) are rare. We report a case of industrial injury that resulted in perforating eye injury and intracranial foreign body by a nail gun. A 30-year-old man accidentally fired a nail gun onto his left eye at his construction workplace while handling the malfunctioned equipment and sustained a perforating injury of the left eye with intracranial foreign body. The misfired nail was lodged in his frontal lobe of the brain. He also suffered laceration wounds of the lateral canthus of the left eye and fractures of the left orbital floor and roof. He underwen

INTRODUCTION: Open globe injuries are a major cause of visual impairment in children, related to the severity of the trauma or secondary to induced amblyopia. Intraocular foreign bodies (IOFB) have been reported in approximately one third of cases of open globe injuries. As clinical presentation and management may differ between adults and children, data is lacking about IOFBs in children under 18years of age. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical characteristics and visual prognosis of ocular trauma associated with intraocular foreign bodies in children.
