Tirzepatide attenuates cardiac microvascular injury and ferroptosis-related lipid peroxidation in diabetic mice: endothelial responses in the context of partial PRKN silencing.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic metabolic stress damages the cardiac microvasculature. We evaluated tirzepatide-associated cardiac and endothelial effects, including endpoint patterns after partial silencing of parkin RBR E3 ubiquitin protein ligase (PRKN) and lipidated microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 beta (LC3B-II) accumulation during lysosomal blockade. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice received a normal diet, a high-fat diet (HFD), or HFD/streptozotocin (STZ); HFD and HFD/STZ cohorts received tirzepatide or vehicle for 8 weeks. Metabolic, cardiac, microvascular, lipid-peroxidation, iron, and

Image-Guided Cervicotomy and Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Reinnervation in Zone II Glass Neck Trauma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Hemodynamically stable penetrating neck trauma with retained deep foreign bodies can conceal functionally significant neural injury despite absence of major vascular findings on computed tomography angiography. In selected cases, early laryngoscopy may provide decisive functional evidence and help identify occult recurrent laryngeal nerve injury requiring timely surgical exploration. CASE REPORT A 45-year-old woman presented with penetrating neck trauma caused by multiple glass fragments, with Zone II entry wounds and a deep transcervical trajectory across zones. She was hemodynamic

Traumatic external jugular vein aneurysm after a kendo thrust (tsuki).

Aneurysm of the external jugular vein is rare, and a traumatic case with a documented mechanism and pathological findings is exceptional. A woman in her 50s sustained a blunt injury to the left anterior neck from a kendo thrust (tsuki). One month later she developed a left cervical swelling. Ultrasound study and computed tomography showed a 2-cm saccular dilatation with a cranial filling defect, indicating partial thrombosis. After 4 months of observation, the aneurysm was resected at the patient's request. Histopathology showed segmental loss of elastic fibers and adventitial rupture without

Preliminary Transcriptomic Effects of Lateralized RLN Denervation in Rat Vocal Fold.

OBJECTIVES: To test whether unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) transection elicits side specific transcriptomic responses in rat vocal fold compartments. We compared the medial thyroarytenoid (MTA) muscle and mucosa on the left versus right, accounting for baseline laterality. METHODS: Unilateral RLN transection was performed in five adult rats (Left RLN: 2-males, 1-female; Right RLN: 1-male, 1-female). 5-weeks post-injury, the medial thyroarytenoid (MTA) muscle and vocal fold mucosa were harvested for RNA sequencing. Differential expression analysis compared Left-denervated versus Ri

Development and internal validation of a nomogram for predicting lymph node metastasis posterior to the right recurrent laryngeal nerve in papillary thyroid carcinoma: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The lymph nodes posterior to the right recurrent laryngeal nerve (LN-prRLN) lie deep in the right central compartment. Clearing them is technically demanding and adds to the risk of injury to the nerve and parathyroid glands, whereas occult metastases left behind may cause persistent or recurrent disease. Knowing in advance which patients are likely to have LN-prRLN metastasis would help tailor the extent of central neck dissection. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 320 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) treated at a single tertiary center between August 2021 and F

Cell-inspired dual-tandem catalytic nanoreactors drive targeted hearing protection.

Sensorineural hearing loss is driven by disruption of cochlear homeostasis, where dysregulated redox, ionic, and metabolic factors lead to hair cell degeneration and synaptic injury. Current strategies lack the capacity to restore the enzymatic clearance of reactive oxygen species or penetrate the blood-labyrinth barrier. Here, we report a cell-inspired dual-tandem catalytic nanoreactor (HSC@Se) integrating GPx-mimetic diselenide with superoxide dismutase and catalase to reconstruct the detoxification cascade. We show that the albumin scaffold stabilizes the nanoarchitecture and enables active

Exploring risk groups for concomitant injuries in facial fracture patients: a data-driven analysis.

PURPOSE: Patients with facial fractures are a diverse group with varying injury mechanisms and extent of injury. These patients often suffer from concomitant injuries (CIs) of different severity outside the facial region, some of which are life-threatening and may require urgent care. Therefore, early identification of patients at risk for CI is important. This study aimed to investigate exploratory risk groups for concomitant injuries in patients with facial fractures, focusing on the impact of injury energy, sex and age on the prevalence and type of concomitant injury. METHODS: In this retr

Morphological Study of the Foramen Transversarium of the Typical Cervical Vertebrae with Clinical Correlation.

BACKGROUND: The foramen transversarium (FT) is a distinctive anatomical structure in the cervical vertebrae for the passage of the vertebral artery, vein, and sympathetic plexus. The FT is a feature in all cervical vertebrae and is important for normal vertebral physiology. In this article, the anatomy of the FT is presented and discussed with respect to the variability of this foramen, its structural dimensions, and its clinical applications. The relevance for the contents of the FT are important because they contain nerves and blood vessels, and given its intimate relation with the neurovasc

Single-Cell Mapping Identifies Aging-Associated Neutrophil Remodeling Across Multiple Organs.

Aging is accompanied by progressive immune remodeling and functional decline across multiple organs. However, the role of neutrophils and their heterogeneous states in these processes remains incompletely understood. Here we integrated single-cell RNA sequencing datasets from multiple organs of young and aged mice to characterize aging-associated neutrophil remodeling. We identified organ-dependent changes in neutrophil abundance and state composition, together with neutrophil subsets enriched for inflammatory, oxidative stress, complement, and IL-6-related transcriptional programs. In vitro,

Injuries of the upper cervical spine represent 1/3 of all cervical spine injuries and approximately 40 % result by the death. Every level of the cervical spine can be injured - fractures of condyles of the occipital bone (CO), atlantooccipital dislocation (AOD), fractures of the Atlas (C1), atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) and fractures of the axis (C2). Most of cases in younger patients are caused by high-energy trauma, while by elderly people, because of the osteoporosis, is needed much less energy and even simple falls can cause the injury of the cervical spine. That´s why the etiology of inj

Efficacy of Z-shaped supine position in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men worldwide and is frequently managed with robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). Standard patient positioning during RARP, specifically the lithotomy and steep Trendelenburg positions with a head-down angle of 25°-45°, can lead to complications such as peripheral nerve injury, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. This study introduces an alternative "Z-shaped supine position," aimed at reducing postoperative position-related complications and improving patient comfort. METHODS: This si

Is arthroscopically-assisted reduction and internal fixation (ARIF) superior to percutaneous fixation in talar neck fractures? A proportional meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Arthroscopically assisted Reduction and Internal Fixation (ARIF) to fix talar neck fractures is progressively gaining popularity. Our aim was to determine if ARIF in this setting might increase the healing rate and reduce the number of complications as compared to percutaneous fixation (PF) alone. METHODS: As per PRISMA guidelines, multiple databases (Scopus, Pubmed, Web of Science and Cochrane) were used to retrieve studies reporting on patients diagnosed with a fracture of the talar neck undergone minimally invasive surgery using screws as exclusive fixation method. Data were
