OBJECTIVE: Radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy (RHL) is the preferred treatment for early-stage cervical cancer. Although oncological outcome is good with regard to recurrence and survival rates, it is well known that RHL might result in postoperative bladder impairments due to autonomic nerve disruption. The pelvic autonomic network has been extensively studied, but the anatomy of nerve fibers branching off the inferior hypogastric plexus to innervate the bladder is less known. Besides, the pathogenesis of bladder dysfunction after RHL is multifactorial but remains unclear. We st

Previous studies showed that the upregulation of the P2X7 receptor in cervical sympathetic ganglia was involved in myocardial ischemic (MI) injury. The dysregulated expression of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) participates in the onset and progression of many pathological conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a small interfering RNA (siRNA) against the NONRATT021972 lncRNA on the abnormal changes of cardiac function mediated by the up-regulation of the P2X7 receptor in the superior cervical ganglia (SCG) after myocardial ischemia. When the MI rats were treated with

Five elderly women complicated with severe aortic stenosis were admitted to our hospital due to femoral neck fracture. Maximum aortic jet velocity was above 5.0 m · s(-1) and aortic valve pressure gradient was above 100 mmHg. Every family wanted to have the fractured femoral neck repaired, despite a high mortality during periop- erative period. We anesthetized the patients with com- bined lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve block and mild sedation. The operation was performed uneventfully. Although one of them sometimes complained chest pain during postoperative period, all five patients could be

UNLABELLED: Sympathetic nervous system activity is increased after cardiopulmonary arrest, resulting in vasoconstrictor release from the perivascular sympathetic nerves of cerebral arteries. However, the pathophysiological function of the perivascular sympathetic nerves in the ischemic brain remains unclear. A rat model of global cerebral ischemia (asphyxial cardiac arrest, ACA) was used to investigate perivascular sympathetic nerves of cerebral arteries via bilateral decentralization (preganglionic lesion) of the superior cervical ganglion (SCG). Decentralization of the SCG 5 days before ACA

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have shown the importance of the sympathetic nervous system in bone metabolism. There is an evidence of sympathetic skin response (SSR) impairment in electrical burn patients up to 2 years after their injuries. The acute phase of burn is accompanied by increased bone resorption. Whether the prolonged dysfunction of sympathetic nervous system may result in bone metabolism derangement even after the acute phase of electrical burn is the inspiring question for this study. And we tried to find correlation between SSR abnormality and areal bone mineral density (BMD) in

Orofacial pain is a common complaint of patients that causes distress and compromises the quality of life. It has many etiologies including trauma, interventional procedures, nerve injury, varicella-zoster (shingles), tumor, and vascular and idiopathic factors. It has been demonstrated that the sympathetic nervous system is usually involved in various orofacial pain disorders such as postherpetic neuralgia, complex regional pain syndromes, and atypical facial pain. The stellate sympathetic ganglion innervates the head, neck, and upper extremity. In this review article, the effect of stellate g

Horner's syndrome (HS) is caused by an interruption of the cervical sympathetic pathway to the eye and the face. Acquired HS is mainly caused by benign or malignant neoplasms, and in patients with a history of cancer, it is almost always the result of tumor infiltration into the periphery or the central region of the cervical sympathetic chain. We present the case of a 52-year-old patient with long-term disease-free survival (6 years) after a radical mastectomy for breast cancer who presented with cervicobrachialgia and typical HS due to a left lateral-cervical and supraclavicular lymph nodal m

Schwannomas and neurofibromas are benign tumors of the peripheral neural sheath tumors (PNST), representing 5% of soft tissue tumors. Cervical PNST are mainly located on the vagus nerve or in the sympathetic nervous system. The treatment is based on a tumor resection with preservation of nerve function. Classical surgery consists in total tumor removal after dissection of the nerve and is frequently complicated by nerve paralysis. The authors describe a simpler surgical technique consisting in a resection of the intracapsular enucleation of PNST that can limit the risk of nerve injury without

Horner syndrome (HS) results from the interruption of sympathic pathway, and the patients have a group of signs including miosis, ptosis, enophthalmos, and anhydrosis. While HS is mainly caused by cervical sympathetic nerve injury such as sympathetic chain tumor, we report here a HS case caused by a thoracolumbar arachnoid cyst. Imageological examination showed the cyst existed in spinal canal from the T11 to L3 level, which was further confirmed by operation. The tumor attacked the lateral margin of intervertebral foramen at certain stages. In MRI scan, no abnormality was found in the patient

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) following injury or nerve damage, as its name signifies, is a challenging entity, and its successful management requires a multidisciplinary approach. It not only manifests as severe pain, but also gives rise to functional disability, lack of sleep, lack of enjoyment of life and poor quality of life. Various pain interventional techniques have been described in the literature for the management of CRPS ranging from sympathetic blocks to spinal cord stimulator. A 34-year-old liver transplant donor, who developed position-induced right upper limb neuropathic

Myocardial ischemia elicits a sympathoexcitatory response characterized by increase in blood pressure and sympathetic nerve activity. Puerarin, a major active ingredient extracted from the traditional Chinese plant medicine Ge-gen, has been widely used in treatment of myocardial and cerebral ischemia. However, little is known about the mechanism. Our study was aimed to explore the effect of puerarin on sympathoexcitatory response induced by myocardial ischemic injury and possible relationship with P2X3 receptor. Our results showed that puerarin alleviated systolic blood pressure and heart rate

Cervical sympathetic and stellate ganglion blocks (SGB) provide a valuable diagnostic and therapeutic benefit to sympathetically maintained pain syndromes in the head, neck, and upper extremity. With the ongoing efforts to improve the safety of the procedure, the techniques for SGB have evolved over time, from the use of the standard blind technique, to fluoroscopy, and recently to the ultrasound (US)-guided approach. Over the past few years, there has been a growing interest in the ultrasound-guided technique and the many advantages that it might offer. Fluoroscopy is a reliable method for id
