Current Evidence for the Use of Jugular Vein Compression Collars in Sport: A Systematic Review.

Sport-related concussions are a common type of brain injury, and the best treatment is prevention. Recently, external jugular vein compression collars have been worn by National Football League players, but the current evidence is limited. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first comprehensive, up-to-date systematic review addressing the use of jugular vein compression collars for decreasing concussion incidence in high-impact sports and activities. Overall, when compared to control, the results indicated that jugular vein compression collars resulted in significantly reduced w

A Narrative Review of the Effects of Internal Jugular Vein Compression on Brain Structure and Function During Periods of Head Impact.

Subconcussive impacts are very common in the sports world and can have many negative impacts on human function, including increased risk for cognitive decline and behavioral impairments such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The purpose of this article is to analyze the available literature on the effects of jugular vein compression applied by a cervical collar on cerebral structure and function in the setting of chronic impact exposure. This narrative review analyzed 17 articles on brain structure and function, published between 1992 and 2022. Our review of the 17 studies shows an ov

Percutaneous continuous vagal stimulation provided superior neuromonitoring over the peroral electrode in transoral thyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring (C-IONM) has been developed and used in open thyroidectomy to perceive imminent recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury, but has scarcely been reported in transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) due to technical difficulty. This study aims to report the percutaneous C-IONM technology in TOETVA and compare it with the conventional peroral method to confirm its feasibility, safety, and effectiveness. METHODS: This prospective study included 102 consecutive patients who received TOETVA and standardized continuous vagal

Unusual sequela of neck trauma: External carotid pseudoaneurysm and jugular fistula.

Carotid-jugular fistulas (CJFs) are rare vascular anomalies that typically arise after trauma or iatrogenic injury, such as central venous catheterization. In exceptional cases, they may result from the rupture of a pseudoaneurysm into an adjacent vein. We report a unique case of a 42-year-old man who presented with a right-sided pulsatile neck mass ten years after a knife wound. Imaging revealed a pseudoaneurysm of the external carotid artery communicating directly with the internal jugular vein, forming a CJF. This case highlights the importance of long-term vigilance following cervical trau

Dual Endovascular Approach for Post-traumatic Rupture of Left Iliac Vein in Emergent Setting.

Traumatic venous injuries are associated with high mortality rates. When they involve the inferior vena cava and iliac veins, prompt treatment is necessary in cases of patient instability. Endovascular treatment of a traumatic injury at the iliac confluence extending to the proximal external iliac vein was performed in a 50-year-old patient following a fall. A GORE Excluder PLC141400 endograft was placed at the bleeding site via percutaneous transfemoral access, combined with simultaneous embolization of the internal iliac vein through right percutaneous jugular access. Effective haemostasis w

ISASS Recommendations and Coverage Criteria for Bone-Anchored Annular Defect Closure Following Lumbar Discectomy: Coverage Indications, Limitations, and/or Medical Necessity-An ISASS 2025 Policy Update on the Use of Bone-Anchored Annular Closure to Prevent Reherniation in High-Risk Lumbar Discectomy Patients.

There is a tremendous increase in the demand for converting biomaterials into high-quality industrially manufactured human body parts, also known as medical implants. Drug delivery systems, bone plates, screws, cranial, and dental devices are the popular examples of these implants - the potential alternatives for human life survival. However, the processing techniques of an engineered implant largely determine its preciseness, surface characteristics, and interactive ability with the adjacent tissue(s) in a particular biological environment. Moreover, the high cost-effective manufacturing of a

Unusual case of death by grinder.

Suicides by power tools such as grinders are rare and present significant challenges in forensic investigation. Accurate differentiation between suicidal, homicidal, or accidental injuries is crucial, particularly when the circumstances surrounding the death are ambiguous. We report the case of a 64-year-old man found dead in his workshop. The body was discovered lying near a grinder, with a deep cervical wound. The scene revealed multiple blood droplets scattered across the room, along with two large blood pools located approximately one meter from the body and a stepladder securing the disco

Lethal kite threads: Near-decapitation of a motorcyclist.

Kite flying is a popular recreation in many countries. However, the use of synthetic manja string has led to increased injuries, particularly among motorcyclists and pedestrians. We present the case of a 17-year-old male motorcyclist who sustained a deep cut-throat injury from a manja kite string. Despite emergency surgical intervention, which included vascular reconstruction and tracheostomy, the patient remained unresponsive and died two days later. Autopsy findings revealed extensive damage to the carotid arteries, internal jugular vein, thyroid gland and trachea, with cerebral infarction d

Catheter Misplacement Revealing Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (PAPVR) in an Acute Kidney Injury Patient.

An 84-year-old patient, treated in the ICU for acute kidney injury complicating coronary artery bypass surgery, experienced an unusual event during dialysis catheter placement. First, venous blood was drawn while the catheter was inserted into the left internal jugular vein. Ultrasound confirmed the proper guidewire placement, and the dilator and catheter were inserted without difficulty. However, the blood returned from the catheter was unexpectedly bright, raising concerns for arterial placement. Transduced pressures were pulsatile, but levels were inconsistent with arterial positioning. A s

A 66-Year-Old Man with Intrapleural Leakage of Parenteral Nutrition Fluid Due to a Malpositioned Central Venous Catheter.

BACKGROUND Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) can be indicated when oral and enteral intake are not feasible. TPN requires central venous access. This case describes a 66-year-old man with intrapleural leakage of TPN, due to a malpositioned central venous catheter. CASE REPORT A 66-year-old man was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with septic shock due to cholangitis. On admission to the ICU, a central venous catheter (CVC) was placed in the left internal jugular vein. On day 4, TPN was started because of gastrointestinal intolerance to enteral feeding. On day 5, he developed a bilatera

"It Looks Arterial": The Chest X-Ray of Nightmares.

Central venous access is a common procedure for a variety of indications such as dialysis, plasmapheresis, or difficult venous access. Although a relatively safe procedure that can be done at the bedside, complications can still occur. Recognition and management of central line complications such as vascular injury and bleeding, infection, and misplacement are important when caring for patients with central vascular access and for the proceduralist who places the central line. Here we present an uncommon complication of internal jugular central access where a left internal jugular central line

Straight to the back: Femoral triple lumen catheter misplaced in a lumbar vein.

Central venous catheters are devices inserted into large central veins, usually internal jugular, femoral, or subclavian and serve multiple purposes including administration of vasoactive medications, dialysis, plasmapheresis, total parenteral nutrition, among others. It is considered a relatively safe procedure when performed by experienced clinicians, especially under ultrasound guidance. However, complications are not uncommon and include arterial puncture, injury to nearby structures such as lung puncture leading to pneumothorax, bleeding, infection, and line misplacement. We present a cas

Styloidectomy for Jugular Decompression in Venous Outflow Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Jugular venous stenosis at the level of C1 and the styloid process is increasingly implicated in cerebral venous outflow disorders, often presenting with headache, pulsatile tinnitus, and cognitive complaints. Although small studies suggest benefit from open decompression via styloidectomy, larger series are needed to clarify outcomes and complication profiles. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective review was performed evaluating patients who underwent styloidectomy with or without partial C1 resection for symptomatic jugular stenosis between 2022 and 2024. Inclusion criteria in

Renal Cortical Necrosis Secondary to Idiopathic Acute Pancreatitis in a Young Adult: A Case Report.

Renal cortical necrosis (RCN) is a rare and severe form of acute kidney injury (AKI), often resulting in irreversible kidney failure. We present the case of a 25-year-old male who developed severe acute pancreatitis (AP), leading to dialysis-requiring AKI. Despite remission of the initial AP episode, he remained anuric and dialysis-dependent for four weeks. A renal biopsy revealed diffuse cortical necrosis. He was continued on maintenance hemodialysis via a right internal jugular vein (IJV) tunneled venous catheter. Eight weeks after the initial episode, he presented with acute abdominal pain.
