In hemodialysis patients being dialyzed using an arteriovenous fistula, limb pain is a common problem with multifactorial etiologies, including puncture pain, dialysis access-associated ischemic steal syndrome, ischemic monomelic neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, and axillary artery dissection. The common causes of limb pain related to vascular access include direct puncture pain, vascular complications (such as stenosis, thrombosis, aneurysm), and nerve injury. The puncture pain related to dialysis access can be alleviated by local anesthetics (such as lidoca

OBJECTIVE: Triceps motor branch transfer to the anterior division of the axillary nerve (AXN) was originally described for patients with a loss of deltoid function secondary to upper trunk (UT) brachial plexus injuries but has evolved to restore deltoid function in isolated peripheral AXN injuries. The purpose of this study was to compare functional outcomes in patients who had undergone this procedure in the setting of UT brachial plexus injury versus peripheral AXN injury.
METHODS: The records of patients who had undergone triceps branch to anterior division of the AXN transfer at a single

Brachial plexus injuries are rare but highly disabling, with major implications for upper limb function and quality of life. Nerve transfers have emerged as a key reconstructive technique, particularly valuable in cases where primary repair or grafting is unfeasible or delayed. This retrospective study analysed functional outcomes following nerve transfers in 37 patients with brachial plexus injury. Motor recovery was assessed using the Medical Research Council scale. Patients were stratified by age, timing of surgery, injury severity, and type of nerve transfer performed. The majority of our

BACKGROUND: Spinal accessory nerve (SAN) transfer is commonly used to reanimate the suprascapular nerve (SSN) in traumatic brachial plexus injuries (BPI). Despite its technical simplicity and satisfactory results, this transfer has two disadvantages: the inadequacy of the number of nerve fibers between donor and recipient and the weakening of the trapezius muscle. To avoid this, we transferred a fascicle from the C7 root for the pectoralis major muscle to the suprascapular nerve for shoulder abduction.
METHODS: Patients with traumatic upper trunk brachial plexus injury presenting within 6 mon

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brachial plexus injuries can significantly impair shoulder function, particularly abduction and external rotation. Various nerve transfer techniques are available to restore these functions. This meta-analysis evaluates the efficacy of different nerve transfers for shoulder abduction and external rotation recovery to identify the most effective surgical approaches.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Mendeley up to June 2025 following PRISMA guidelines. Studies were included if they involved nerve transfers to the suprascapular and/or axillary nerv

Glenoid fractures of the scapula can be treated via anterior deltopectoral, Judet, modified Judet, or posterior minimally invasive approaches; however, these may result in soft tissue injury, hematoma formation, nerve damage, or inadequate internal fixation stability. While arthroscopy minimizes soft tissue dissection, it may pose challenges in visualizing inferior glenoid fragments. To address these potential complications, we designed a new posterior axillary approach, the Tian Yun-Wu Dankai approach (T-W approach), in the treatment of certain glenoid fractures of scapula. We retrospectively

RATIONALE: Glenoid fractures, representing approximately 10% of scapular fractures, are uncommon but clinically significant due to their frequent association with high-energy trauma. Without timely and adequate management, such injuries may lead to complications including nonunion, osteoarthritis, and chronic instability, especially when fracture patterns are complex or extend into the scapular body. This report highlights the unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of managing an Ideberg type Vb glenoid fracture.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 32-year-old male motorcyclist presented with significa

Peripheral motor nerve transfer surgery is a technique that may be used to restore motor function to paralyzed muscles. Motor nerve transfer involves harvesting an expendable motor nerve branch, and transfer to the motor branch of the denervated target muscle, using microsurgical coaptation. To date, a standardized rehabilitation protocol does not exist. The 6 stages of rehabilitation after motor nerve transfer surgery were outlined by colleagues in the Birmingham Peripheral Nerve Injury service in 2019. This article aims to provide a practical therapy perspective on the rehabilitation stages

This study investigated the anatomical details of the axillary and radial nerves in 50 upper limbs from 29 adult formalin-embalmed cadavers, and ten fresh upper limbs. The focus was on understanding the course, division, and ramifications of these nerves to improve treatment of shoulder dysfunction caused by axillary nerve damage. The axillary nerve divided anteriorly and posteriorly before passing the quadrangular space in all specimens, with specific distances to the first ramifications. It was found that the deltoid muscle's clavicular and acromial parts were always innervated by the anteri

CASE: A 60-year-old man sustained a massive irreparable rotator cuff tear and axillary nerve palsy with deltoid dysfunction after an anterior shoulder dislocation. He underwent staged reverse end-to-side radial-to-axillary nerve transfer with return of deltoid function allowing for subsequent reverse shoulder arthroplasty. At 1 year postoperatively, he returned to full activity.
CONCLUSION: Irreparable rotator cuff tears complicated by axillary nerve palsy can be effectively treated with a staged approach of nerve transfer followed by reverse shoulder arthroplasty.
