INTRODUCTION: Achilles tendon is the most frequently ruptured tendon, but its optimal treatment is increasingly controversial. The mechanical properties of the healing tendon should be studied further. Shear waves elastography (SWE) measures the shear modulus, which is proven to be correlated to elastic modulus in animal tendons. The aim of our study was to study whether the shear moduli of human cadaveric Achilles tendon, given by SWE, were correlated with the apparent elastic moduli of those tendons given by tensile tests.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen cadaveric lower-limbs were studied.

Distal triceps ruptures are rare injuries due to the special anatomical features of the muscle and tendon-bone junction. This injury typically occurs at the tendon-bone junction due to an eccentric contraction of the muscle. The treatment is controversial, especially in partial ruptures; surgical repair is indicated for complete ruptures of the distal triceps tendon.Several repair techniques have been described for acute complete ruptures.Chronic ruptures often require reconstruction rather than direct repair. INTRODUCTION: Upper brachial plexus injury in adults causes loss of elbow fl exion; when the primary nerve surgery has failed or the patient seeks treatment after 12 months of injury and pedicled muscle transfers are required. Most commonly, the latissimus dorsi or the Steindler flexorplasty is used.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have transferred one of the heads of triceps muscle to restore the elbow flexion in such cases. In addition to return of elbow flexion, extension of elbow following surgery is retained. Ten patients suffering from upper brachial plexus injuries underwent transfer of one h

Rupture of the distal biceps brachii tendon typically occur in a contraction against resistance with the elbow in 90° of flexion. Chronic ruptures are uncommon and are complicated by tendon and muscle retraction and poor quality. Some reconstruction techniques have been described in the literature, with variations on the surgical exposures, type of graft (allo or autograft), graft donor site, and type of attachment to the radial tuberosity. The authors report the case of a patient presented a rupture of the distal biceps brachii tendon that took place five weeks earlier and, therefore, underwe

Achilles tendon (AT) compliance can affect the generation and transmission of triceps surae muscle forces, and thus has important biomechanical consequences for walking performance. However, the uniarticular soleus (SOL) and the biarticular (GAS) function differently during walking, with in vivo evidence suggesting that their associated fascicles and tendinous structures exhibit unique kinematics during walking. Given the strong association between muscle fiber length, velocity and force production, we conjectured that SOL and GAS mechanics and energetic behavior would respond differently to a

INTRODUCTION: Tension band wiring (TBW) used for olecranon fractures is afflicted with a high rate of complications. The aim of this study was to compare the stability of the TBW versus an alternative, novel low-profile olecranon tension plate (OTP) with angular stable screws in a simulated complex fracture model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine fresh-frozen pairs of cadaver proximal ulnae with an oblique osteotomy and an additional wedge fragment simulating an unstable fracture were tested. The TBW and OTP were implanted pairwise. The elbow motion was simulated in a single-muscle model and range

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine whether physical findings reflecting triceps surae strength recovery could predict return to activities such as jogging and sports and whether patients' age and sex would influence recovery of triceps surae strength postoperatively.
METHODS: Between 2009 and 2013, 96 consecutive cases of postoperative acute Achilles tendon rupture were reviewed. The postoperative triceps surae strength recovery rate was investigated in all patients by using half body weight 1-time heel rise, full body weight (FBW) 1-time heel rise, FBW 20-time heel rise, jogging, and

BACKGROUND: Injury to distal portion of posterior cord of brachial plexus leads to palsy of radial and axillary nerves. Symptoms are usually motor deficits of the deltoid muscle; triceps brachii muscle; and extensor muscles of the wrist, thumb, and fingers. Tendon transfers, nerve grafts, and nerve transfers are options for surgical treatment of proximal radial nerve palsy to restore some motor functions. Tendon transfer is painful, requires a long immobilization, and decreases donor muscle strength; nevertheless, nerve transfer produces promising outcomes. We present a patient with proximal r

Injuries of the triceps brachii muscle are a rare entity and mostly concern its distal tendon. These represent the least common of all muscle and tendons injuries. The most common reported causes are repeated strong physical efforts, a fall on an outstretched forearm when a sudden deceleration is put on contract triceps, or a direct trauma. High-dosed and prolonged corticosteroid therapies, repeated local steroid injections, chronic renal failure, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hyperparathyroidism, and osteogenesis imperfecta are reported as systemic causes. Even rarer are lesions of muscle f

Healing in continuity with lengthening of the Achilles tendon is a disabling complication after Achilles tendon rupture. This results in weakness of ankle plantarflexion and a non-propulsive gait on the affected side. The elongated tendon may have to be shortened or reconstructed to re-establish the length and the physiologic tension in triceps surae muscle and allow restoration of push off. This technical note describes the details of endoscopic shortening of the Achilles tendon.

Chronic posterior elbow soft tissue defects often require soft tissue reconstruction because of exposure of the underlying triceps tendon and proximal ulna. Current options for soft tissue coverage require sacrifice of a local muscle or microsurgery. The purpose of this study is to evaluate patient and surgical outcomes after reconstruction of small-sized to medium-sized (<50 cm) posterior elbow defects with bipedicle advancement flaps. A retrospective chart review was performed for 3 patients who underwent posterior elbow reconstruction with bipedicle flaps. The etiology of the soft tissue el

BACKGROUND: Massive irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears represent a serious functional disablement for young and active patients in their daily activities. Latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle-tendon transfer can restore elevation and external rotation where supraspinatus and infraspinatus function is lost.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2009 and 2013, 45 consecutive patients underwent arthroscopically assisted LD transfer for an irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tear. Thirty-three patients agreed to participate in this retrospective study. For 8 patients, we used a standard passage

UNLABELLED: Clinically the sites of Achilles Tendon (AT) overuse conditions can be divided into the tendon mid-portion and osteotendinous attachment.
PURPOSE: We propose an anatomical analysis of the triceps surae musculotendon unit that could provide a possible anatomic explanation for these 2 sites of injury.
METHOD: Twelve cadavers (age 74±7 years) were studied. In both legs, calf muscles (lateral gastrocnemius (LG), medial gastrocnemius (MG) and soleus) were dissected and their volumes measured. Fine saw cuts were made in the sagittal plane, either side of the midline of the calcaneus. E

The Achilles tendon is the widest tendon of the human body. Achilles tendon belongs to the extrasynovial tendons group and this allows it a faster recovery, thanks to local hematoma from the peritenon, necessary for the scarification. We concluded that in Achilles tendon rupture treatment it is essential to maintain the tendon covering skin integrity, the peritendinous integrity, to maintain the local hematoma formed during and after tendon rupture, reattaching the ruptured tendon heads and maintain them in this position by suturing them and by relaxing the sural triceps muscle. The percutaneo

In tetraplegia patients, activities of daily living are highly dependent on the remaining upper limb functions. In other countries, upper limb reconstruction surgery to improve function has been applied to diverse cases, but few cases have been reported in Korea. The current authors experienced a case of posterior deltoid-to-triceps tendon transfer and rehabilitation in a complete spinal cord injury with a C6 neurologic level, and we introduce the case-a 36-year-old man-with a literature review. The patient's muscle strength in C5 C6 muscles were normal, but C7 muscles were trace, and the Spin

The Achilles tendon (AT) is a complex structure, consisting of distinct fascicle bundles arising from each triceps surae muscle that may act as mechanically independent structures. Advances in tissue imaging are rapidly accelerating our understanding of the complexities of functional Achilles tendon behavior, with potentially important implications for musculoskeletal injury and performance. In this overview of our recent contributions to these efforts, we present the results of complementary experimental and computational approaches to investigate AT behavior during walking and its potential
