BACKGROUND: Forearm shaft fractures are common among children. Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) is generally considered the gold standard operative procedure. This study aimed to assess functional outcomes, axial alignment, bone healing, and complication rates in pediatric population.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study reviewed pediatric forearm fracture cases from January 2016 to December 2020 at Mouwasat Dammam Hospital, Saudi Arabia. The study included children aged 16 years and younger who were treated with elastic intramedullary nailing. Both clinical and radiological o

CASE: A 41-year old man fell from height sustaining displaced radial shaft and ulnar styloid fractures underwent open reduction internal fixation of the radius with early recognition of a radiocapitellar dislocation and longitudinal forearm instability in the early postoperative period. Revision surgery was performed 13 days postoperatively involving annular ligament reconstruction, elbow spanning external fixation, and distal radioulnar joint stabilization. Favorable functional and radiographic outcomes are shown at 1-year follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Longitudinal forearm instability is associated

Fractures involving multiple levels of the radius are rare and often associated with ulnar involvement or distal radius injury. We report a previously undocumented injury pattern: a comminuted ipsilateral fracture of the radial head, neck, and shaft, with an intact ulna, in a 28-year-old male following road traffic trauma. The classification system of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen (AO), also known as the Working Group for Osteosynthesis Questions, does not include this type of fracture configuration. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation using a headless

Forearm diaphyseal fractures are common orthopedic injuries that typically require surgical intervention using various implants and approaches. Maintaining reduction while simultaneously achieving compression in radial and/or ulnar shaft fractures during compression plate application can be challenging, particularly with unstable segmental and/or transverse fracture patterns. Nitinol compression staples have become increasingly used as a reduction aid because of their ability to provide continuous compression between the staple legs at the fracture site, low profile, and ease of application. BACKGROUND: Radius and ulna fractures are very common in the pediatric population. Despite the use of pinning through the growth plate, which was proposed in the past and is still being used to treat these fractures, an instrumental validation to define this procedure as safe has not yet been done. Because of this, in the absence of reliable data regarding the passage of fixation devices through the growth plate, most surgical techniques used for treating radius and ulna fractures are based on absolute respect for the growth cartilage. We conducted an MRI pilot study to evaluate the presence o

PURPOSE: Plate fixation of radius and ulna shaft fractures has evolved due to a more complete understanding of the biology and mechanics. Screw fixation across six cortices has been adopted as the standard, purported to provide the optimal biological and mechanical environment for healing; however, recent investigations have proposed that four cortices of fixation may be sufficient. These recommendations are intended for segments of optimal length; however, it is less clear how these options perform in short segment fixation. Our objective was the determine the biomechanical behavior of fixati

Fractures of the forearm shaft are common injuries in everyday clinical practice. Surgical stabilization is usually performed to ensure smooth interaction between the radius and ulna. Compression plate osteosynthesis is used to enable early functional follow-up treatment. Concomitant injuries of the DRUG or PRUG must be reliably excluded or treated accordingly. In the postoperative course, nerve lesions, infections or pseudarthrosis can significantly impair the outcome, especially after open, multi-fragmentary fractures. Early metal removal carries the risk of refractures of the forearm shaft.

Forearm shaft fractures are the most common fractures of the upper extremity in young adults. By definition, these fractures are diaphyseal fractures; however, due to the complex functional unity formed by the forearm shaft during motion both bone forearm fractures are treated as intra-articular fractures [1, 3]. This is why the gold standard of treatment in adults is osteosynthesis. The aim of the surgical intervention is the anatomical reduction with exact reconstruction of length, shaft axis and rotation. This particularly concerns Monteggia and Galeazzi fractures where the adjacent joint n

BACKGROUND: Dynamic compression plate (DCP) osteosynthesis is the gold standard for treating forearm diaphyseal fractures, providing stability and promoting healing. Locking plates (LPs) are increasingly used in modern fracture management but may increase the risk of nonunion if applied with excessive rigidity and without proper fracture site compression. The purpose of this study is to compare the nonunion rate between LPs and DCPs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study by reviewing the medical records and radiographs of 515 patients diagnosed with radial and/or ulnar sha

INTRODUCTION: Femoral condyle osteonecrosis of the knee leading to osteoarthritis is a rare entity, which is noticed more commonly in elderly women. Usually, the medial condyle is involved; lateral condyle involvement is extremely rare. Cases like these with occurrence in young individuals are even more rare and need thorough pre-operative evaluation, patient counseling, and intraoperative correlation for proper line of management. Based on the size and stage of the lesion, treatment options vary from medical management to biological therapies to arthroplasty in advanced cases.

BACKGROUND: Fractures represent a significant global public health concern, particularly affecting younger and older populations; however, there is a notable lack of comprehensive epidemiological research focusing on fracture among adolescents and young adults (AYAs).
METHODS: We assessed the fracture burden in AYAs using GBD 2021 data. Concentration curves and indices were used to evaluate socioeconomic inequalities. Trends and projections were estimated using Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) models.
RESULTS: In 2021, the global incidence of fractures among AYAs reached 40.77 million cases

INTRODUCTION: Chronic osteomyelitis is a debilitating bone infection that can lead to significant morbidity and functional impairment. This condition is often challenging to treat due to its complex nature and the ability of bacteria to form biofilms, which make them resistant to antibiotics. Early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach are crucial for successful management. Orthopedic surgeons often encounter chronic osteomyelitis as a difficult and persistent problem. The key to effective treatment lies in prompt diagnosis and a combination of surgical intervention and antimicrobial ther

Distal ulna and radius fractures are the most frequent upper extremity fractures seen in emergency rooms. The axis of rotation for forearm pronation and supination runs through the radial head (proximal) and the ulnar fovea (distal). Throughout pronation and supination, the radius can rotate relative to the ulna, thanks to the way its head articulates with it. The ulna remains relatively stable during these movements. However, in cases of fractures of these bones, surgery to repair the radius is usually the best course of action for a distal ulna fracture. Most distal ulna fractures heal succe

Successful management of radial and ulnar shaft fractures is an essential skill for all orthopaedic surgeons. The frequent presentation of these injuries coupled with the nuanced anatomic considerations that must be observed for successful outcomes dictate that these injuries require a thorough understanding by the treating surgeon. Intraoperative care to restore the anatomic radial bow and rotation is essential for the resumption of functional forearm rotation postinjury. Often, problems arising during the operative treatment of radial and ulnar shaft fractures come in predictable patterns th

Paediatric tibial shaft fractures are commonly treated nonoperatively and followed-up in the clinic setting. Loss of position has traditionally been managed with wedging of the cast or admission and manipulation in the operaing theatre. The authors present a technique to aid in the wedging of plasters for paediatric tibia and forearm fractures that reduces time requirement, hospital costs and emotional distress on the part of the patient and family.
