Free access to medications for scabies treatment in Italy: a call to action and the need to evaluate its clinical and epidemiological impact.

Dear Editor, The escalating spread of scabies, caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, is a pressing and worrisome public health concern, with increasing worldwide incidence every year and frequent outbreaks, making it not only an Italian problem but a global one. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified several key actions to control scabies, the most significant being the provision of funded therapies and their integration into universal health coverage programs. Genetic diversity of Streptomyces species causing potato common scab in northern China.

Potato common scab (PCS) is caused by various Streptomyces spp., which seriously affect the quality and economic value of potatoes. Different species of pathogens may affect disease control strategies due to their biological characteristics. To determine pathogen composition in the major potato production area, northern China, potato tubers with various types of PCS symptoms were collected from 18 counties. From 57 collected samples, 159 bacterial isolates of Streptomyces spp. were obtained on oatmeal agar. Pathogenicity of these isolates was examined on tuber disks and potted plants of potato

Magistral Galenic Preparations in Modern Dermatology: Our Top 10 Picks for Bridging Therapeutic Gaps.

Background/Objectives: Topical treatment efficacy is fundamentally dependent on effective delivery of the active pharmaceutical ingredient and its compatibility with the compromised skin barrier. Many commercially available industrial formulations contain poorly tolerated excipients or lack essential therapeutic combinations, frequently leading to complex polypharmacy and reduced patient adherence. In contrast, magistral galenic preparations offer a degree of therapeutic personalization unmatched by standardized products, positioning the compounding laboratory as a strategic resource in dermat

Recent Developments, Challenges in Bitter Gourd Protein and Peptide Extraction Strategies, Techno-Functional Properties, Bioaccessibility, and Commercial Applications.

Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) has turned out to be a significant source of proteins and bioactive peptides, which have prospects of finding application in functional foods and nutraceuticals. It contains a high level of proteins and phytochemicals, which offer significant health benefits. Leaves, seeds, and stems are also high sources of antioxidants and are good stores of important nutrients. It can help prevent and treat a number of lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cancer, nephrolithiasis, scabies, abdominal pain, and fever. This review critically evaluates the l

Economic impact of a large-scale scabies upsurge on healthcare facilities in Rohingya refugee camps: A retrospective costing study.

Scabies is one of the common infectious skin conditions globally, with a significantly high burden in hot and tropical countries, and resource-poor settings. Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar are one of the most protracted refugee crises in the world, sheltering approximately 1,143,096 refugees. While most existing literature focuses on mass drug administration (MDA) interventions or community-level estimates, the economic burden of scabies on health system is rarely studied. This is a retrospective costing study, where we used financial and epidemiological data from January 2021 to Decemb

Association Between Total Serum Immunoglobulin E Levels and Persistent Pruritus Following Scabies Treatment: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a common parasitic skin infestation associated with significant immune activation. Elevated total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels have been reported in scabies; however, their association with persistent pruritus following treatment remains unclear. METHODS: This observational analytical study with follow-up assessment included 66 subjects (30 scabies, 36 non-scabies) recruited from Sardjito General Hospital, affiliated hospitals (Sleman Regional General Hospital), and boarding schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Scabies was diagnosed using the 2020 International Alli

Multivariate analysis and ADME profiling of Rosmarinus officinalis L. leaf vs. stem extracts: Extraction method-driven bioactivity and pharmacokinetic implications.

This study evaluated the bioactive potential of Rosmarinus officinalis L. extracts obtained separately from leaves and stems, comparing maceration (ME), Soxhlet (SE), and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) techniques. Phytochemical profiling was performed using Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). Analyses quantified total phenols (TPC), flavonoids (TFC), antioxidant capacity (DPPH, FRAP, ABTS assays), and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Streptomyces scabies. Significant differences were observed between plant parts. SE of

Scabies Outbreak in Pediatric Populations of Bangladesh: A Perspective on Therapeutic Management, Risk Factors, and Public Health Implications.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Scabies remains a major cause of morbidity among Bangladeshi children, particularly in overcrowded and resource-limited settings. This perspective synthesizes current evidence to contextualize the surge of pediatric scabies outbreaks reported across Bangladesh in 2025. This perspective aimed to map outbreak hotspots, identify key risk determinants, and highlight health system gaps in surveillance and diagnosis, and therapeutic management of scabies. METHODS: Evidence was compiled from published literature, national health data, WHO reports, media alerts, interviews with 5

Scabicidin from Insect Gut Streptomyces Effectively Controls Potato Scab by Targeting DNA Gyrase.

Potato scab, caused by multiple Streptomyces species, is a major soil-borne disease with no effective chemical control. In this study, we isolated Streptomyces niveus NEAU-TZZ3 from the gut of Diestrammena japonica and identified its principal antibacterial metabolite as scabicidin. This compound exhibited potent inhibitory activity against six Streptomyces pathogens responsible for potato scab, with EC50 values of 0.056-0.84 μg/mL, substantially lower than those of the commercial bactericide zhongshengmycin. In pot and field trials, scabicidin provided dose-dependent control efficacy, reachin

Factors associated with scabies severity and reinfection: A cross-sectional study during recent surges in the Chattogram Division, Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the severity level, reinfection pattern, and associated factors of scabies in the Chattogram Division of Bangladesh. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional household-based study conducted among 349 scabies-affected participants using multi-stage cluster sampling. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. The study considered two primary outcome variables, namely, severity and reinfection rate. Descriptive analyses were conducted to show frequency and percentage, heatmapping for geographical variation, and chi-squar
