Maggot infestation leading to Ignatzschineria larvae bacteremia and bladder outlet obstruction.

We report a case of a 61-year-old man with a history of alcoholic cirrhosis and impaired mobility who presented to the Emergency Department (ED) with hepatic encephalopathy, cellulitis, sepsis, and extensive maggot infestation (myiasis). Maggots were recovered from the patient's skin, urethra, and rectum, and the burden of maggots in the urethra had led to bladder outlet obstruction. Blood cultures revealed polymicrobial bacteremia, including Ignatzschineria larvae. Ignatzschineria larvae is a commensal bacterium that resides in the digestive tract of maggots. The organism is rarely pathogenic

Unusually Extensive Furuncular Myiasis in a Returning Traveller from Rural Ethiopia Complicated by Streptococcus Pyogenes Secondary Infection Following Albendazole Therapy.

Background and Clinical Significance: Furuncular myiasis is a tropical parasitic skin infestation caused by dipterous fly larvae, most commonly affecting travellers to endemic regions. While returning travellers typically present with one or few lesions, extensive parasitism is rare. Increased global mobility and expanding ecological range of myiasis-causing species underscores the need for clinicians in endemic and non-endemic regions to recognise, diagnose, and manage this condition promptly. Awareness of exposure risks-including soil contact, infested clothing, and poor living conditions-is

Risk of Oral Myiasis in Intensive Care Unit: A Case Report Caused by Calliphoridae.

Myiasis is a rare ectoparasitic infestation characterized by the invasion of living tissue by fly larvae of the order Diptera. While larvae typically target wounded skin, ocular, nasopharyngeal, and gastrointestinal regions, oral myiasis is a less frequently reported but clinically significant site of infestation. Herein, we report a case of oral myiasis in a 68-year-old male patient who was intubated and managed in the intensive care unit following a high-altitude fall resulting in a Type III odontoid fracture. A tracheostomy was subsequently performed and during routine replacement of a naso

Fatal cerebral myiasis secondary to squamous cell carcinoma: case report and scoping review.

Cerebral myiasis is an exceptionally rare condition caused by infestation with dipteran larvae, with only 20 cases reported in the literature to date. A 78-year-old man presented with anorexia, vomiting, and fever. Physical examination revealed a 7 × 8 cm ulcerated scalp lesion with a necrotic base, purulent discharge, a foul odor, and numerous larvae. Computed tomography demonstrated an osteolytic frontal bone defect accompanied by pneumocephalus and subcutaneous emphysema. The larvae were manually removed, an iodoform dressing was applied, and intravenous ceftriaxone therapy was initiated. P

Nasal Rhinomyiasis Caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax Complicated by a Parapharyngeal Abscess: A Case Report.

Nasopharyngeal myiasis is a rare parasitic disease caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax larvae that affects the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. A 12-year-old adolescent presented with a lesion caused by a fly entering the left nostril, characterised by the emergence of larvae. Sinus tomography documented inflammatory changes consistent with ethmoid-maxillary sinusitis in the left nasal cavity and parapharyngeal abscess. Treatment included ivermectin for myiasis, clindamycin and cefotaxime for the abscess, and functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) for cleaning and debridement. The patient

A comparison of traditional visual scoring and a digital object counting approach to assess buffalo fly burden on cattle.

Buffalo fly (Haematobia irritans exigua) is recognised for its impact on cattle health, welfare, and production. It is ranked the number one endemic pest for the Australian beef cattle industry by Meat and Livestock Australia. An accurate estimation of fly numbers is essential to evaluate treatment efficacy, phenotyping of susceptible animals for genetic improvement and determining threshold levels to guide integrated pest management strategies. Traditionally, fly numbers are estimated through visual scoring which is inherently challenging as it involves estimating moving flies on a restless h

Trap shape affects efficacy of sticky traps for New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), is an obligate parasite of warm-blooded animals and a serious threat to livestock, wild animals, and humans. The sterile insect technique (SIT) was used to eradicate screwworm from North and Central America during the mid-1900s to the early-2000s. Traps are an important tool for screwworm control programs, where they are used for surveillance, evaluation of production strains, and to estimate the ratio of wild to sterile flies following aerial and ground releases. Here, we tested two trap designs for capturing New World screwworm. The ve

Management Practices for the Control of Haematobia irritans, Dermatobia hominis, and Cochliomyia hominivorax in Cattle Across Latin America: A Sustainable, Collective Approach.

Bovines are suitable hosts and can be affected by fly infestations. Flies pose a significant threat to cattle livestock in Latin America (LA), causing substantial economic repercussions to animal production (reduced productivity, veterinary expenses, and decreased animal welfare) and damage to human health. The most important flies affecting cattle in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Uruguay are Haematobia irritans, Dermatobia hominis, and Cochliomyia hominivorax. Due to production losses and the consequent economic costs associated with these flies, control measures must be implemente

Umbilical cord myiasis in a preterm neonate: a rare sepsis aetiology uncovered by root cause analysis - case report.

Myiasis is the infestation of living human or animal tissue by fly larvae and is most common in wounds, body orifices or necrotic tissue in tropical and subtropical regions where hygiene is poor. Of the various forms of human myiasis, umbilical cord myiasis is exceedingly rare, with most reported cases occurring after the 5th day of life in infants cared for at home. A preterm neonate born at 30 weeks gestation developed umbilical cord myiasis with early-onset sepsis by 36 hours of life in a neonatal intensive care unit. This is one of the earliest and rarest presentations to be reported. Live

A rare case of oral myiasis in a non-tropical region: the role of systemic vulnerability.

Myiasis is a rare parasitic infection caused by the larvae of Diptera flies, which infest the tissues of humans or animals and are typically found in warm, humid climates. Oral myiasis is uncommon in healthy individuals and typically occurs when adult flies lay eggs or larvae near the mouth or on open wounds. Malnutrition, immunodeficiency, poor oral hygiene, dental problems, neurological or psychiatric conditions, and alcoholism are the main risk factors. In this report, we present a case of oral myiasis that occurred in a patient with multiple comorbidities, including malnutrition, immunolog

Ocular myiasis due to Oestrus ovis in young patients from urban settings in the Himalayan region: An indicator of human-environment conflict?

Ocular myiasis is a relatively rare clinical entity that mainly affects the old and debilitated people with poor hygiene in rural settings and has a strong occupational predisposition. Presented here are two unusual cases of ocular myiasis caused by O. ovis after exposure to dust in young individuals with no history of contact with animals in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. Although early presentation meant a mild illness and early resolution, the reporting of the cases from this region may be an indicator of human-environment conflicts.

Palliative Management of Advanced Breast Carcinoma Complicated by Myiasis: First Case Report From Bangladesh.

Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is the most common subtype of breast cancer. While malignant wounds are known to predispose patients to secondary infections, the co-occurrence of cutaneous myiasis in breast carcinoma remains rare. We report the first documented case of wound myiasis in a patient with advanced breast carcinoma in Bangladesh. A 52-year-old woman with HER2-positive IDC of the right breast, previously treated with mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy in a tertiary care hospital of Dhaka, presented to the Department of Palliative Medicine at Bangladesh Medical University with

Prevalence and seasonal dynamics of botfly (Metacuterebra infulata) parasitism in the rodent Hylaeamys megacephalus in a remnant of Brazilian Cerrado.

Parasitism is mediated by environmental factors and intrinsic host attributes, leading to spatio-temporal dynamics of host-parasite infestation. Mammals are the main hosts of larvae of Cuterebrinae flies, which have been observed in the neotropical rodent Hylaeamys megacephalus (Fischer) (Rodentia, Cricetidae) within the Brazilian Cerrado. Besides describing seasonal dynamics of botfly parasitism in this rodent, we also tested the hypothesis that the prevalence of botfly parasitism varies seasonally, with larvae being more prevalent in the warm-wet season, due to favorable climatic conditions

Severe Oral Myiasis in an Elderly Man with Epilepsy Caused by the New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in Subtropical Ecuador.

Oral myiasis is a rare medical condition in which soft tissues of the oral cavity are invaded by the larvae (maggots) of several flies. We report a fatal case in a 75-year-old man from a subtropical rural region of Ecuador who presented to a public health center with respiratory distress, peripheral cyanosis, dyspnea, and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 9 of 15. The oral cavity emitted a fetid odor and contained bloody secretions with extensive larval invasion affecting the gingiva, lower lip, tongue, and soft palate. More than 300 larvae were manually extracted and morphologically identified as

Ophthalmomyiasis externa by Oestrus ovis in a farmer: A rare case report from rural eastern India.

The infestation of ocular tissue by dipterous fly larvae is known as ophthalmomyiasis. External ophthalmomyiasis primarily affects the conjunctiva and adnexa and is the most frequent manifestation in humans. Oestrus ovis (sheep nasal botfly) is the commonest causative agent. We describe a case of a 42-year-old farmer presenting with the abrupt onset of a foreign body sensation, redness, and watering in the left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed conjunctival congestion and multiple translucent motile larvae in the fornices exhibiting photophobic and burrowing behavior. Five larvae were mechan
