Ophthalmomyiasis is a rare condition caused by the infestation of ocular or periocular tissues by fly larvae. It is typically reported in tropical regions, rural settings, or among individuals with animal exposure. This report presents a unique case of ophthalmomyiasis externa in a 2-year-old girl from upstate New York. The patient presented with persistent left lower eyelid edema, erythema, and discharge following an insect bite that was unresponsive to antibiotic therapy. A botfly larva was expressed with digital pressure. The case underscores the diagnostic challenges of ophthalmomyiasis in

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Malignant fungating wounds (MFWs) represent a profoundly distressing complication of advanced cancer, affecting an estimated 5-10% of patients with solid tumors and imposing a disproportionate burden on quality of life, caregiver wellbeing, and therapeutic engagement. Despite their clinical significance, MFWs remain a systematically neglected domain within oncology and palliative medicine. Existing literature addresses wound odor, wound myiasis, and dignity-related dimensions as isolated topics; a unified clinical framework integrating these three domains from both biologica

Onchocerca flexuosa is a vector-borne filarial nematode infecting red deer (Cervus elaphus) throughout Europe. Despite numerous reports from Central, Northern, and Southern Europe, its occurrence in South-Eastern Europe has remained largely undocumented. This study provides the first molecularly confirmed report and the first systematic epidemiological assessment of O. flexuosa in red deer in Croatia. During the 2024-2025 hunting season, 110 legally harvested red deer from central Croatia were examined for subcutaneous nodules. Nodules were evaluated morphologically, and adult nematodes were i

Nasal myiasis is an uncommon human parasitic disease affecting the nasal cavity. In otolaryngology, myiasis is mostly encountered as aural myiasis and oral myiasis, but occurs rarely as nasal myiasis. It typically affects individuals with poor hygiene, chronic illness, or immunosuppression. Cases in immunocompetent individuals are exceptional and can present diagnostic challenges. We report the case of a 32-year-old immunocompetent female who presented with the spontaneous expulsion of small larvae through the nostrils. Live larvae were observed in both nasal cavities during endoscopic examina

Cordylobia anthropophaga, commonly known as the tumbu fly, is a leading cause of cutaneous myiasis in sub-Saharan Africa. This condition is characterized by a papulopustular lesion that evolves in a painful boil-like nodule with central ulceration. Human infestations typically occur on covered body parts, due to the fly's habit of laying eggs on damp clothing. This report describes the first cluster of three pediatric cases of furuncular myiasis caused by C. anthropophaga, diagnosed at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital (Rome, Italy) between April 2024 and April 2025. All patients had recent

Accidental myiasis, defined as the infestation of living or necrotic tissue by Diptera larvae, represents a neglected but profoundly distressing complication in patients afflicted with advanced malignancies, particularly head and neck cancers (HNC). HNC constitutes a major global health burden, with an exceptionally high incidence in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), such as India, where delayed presentation often culminates in large, ulcerative malignant fungating wounds (MFWs). These MFWs, coupled with environmental factors, socioeconomic disadvantage, poor hygiene, and patient debil

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of sex on natural infestation by Oestrus ovis in lambs. A total of 26 crossbred lambs (14 males and 12 females), aged between 4 and 5 months at the beginning of the 114-day (D0-D113) trial, were maintained under a semi-intensive system in southeastern Brazil. At 8-9 months of age, animals were slaughtered for larval recovery and quantification from the nasal cavity. A total of 483 larvae were recovered, of wich 321 (66.5%) were first-instar larvae (L1) and 162 (33.5%) were second-instar larvae (L2). All males (n = 14) were parasitized, with b

Aural myiasis is an uncommon parasitic infestation involving the external auditory canal by fly larvae, typically seen in tropical climates, especially among individuals with poor hygiene or immunocompromised status. Though rare, it can lead to serious complications, including tympanic membrane perforation or intracranial invasion. We describe a 55-year-old man with hypertension who had been experiencing pain and bleeding in his right ear for four days. Live maggots were found in the right external auditory canal during otoscopic examination. It was impossible to see the tympanic membrane. Sys

Furuncular myiasis is rarely reported in Southeast/Eastern Europe and may be underrecognized or misdiagnosed in non-endemic settings. We described two imported furuncular myiasis cases diagnosed in Romania following travel to Peru and confirmed the etiologic agent by larval morphology and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequencing. We also conducted a narrative review of published case reports/series from Southeast/Eastern Europe (1900-2025) and summarized case characteristics. A previously healthy 31-year-old woman and 32-year-old man presented with painful furuncle-like le

Myiasis is a rare parasitic disease caused by infestation of dipterous fly larvae into living human or animal tissues. Although nosocomial myiasis has been occasionally reported in critically ill patients, cases of oral myiasis in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) coma undergoing tracheal intubation remain rarely reported in South China. Herein, we report a clinical case of a 77-year-old male with type 2 diabetes mellitus who developed oral myiasis after emergency tracheal intubation for DKA coma. Comprehensive therapeutic strategies were implemented, including manual removal of larvae

Myiasis, the infestation of living vertebrate tissue by dipteran larvae, is commonly reported in humans and domestic animals but rarely documented in wild reptiles. Information on its occurrence in the endangered Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis Ouwens, 1912) is lacking, despite the species' conservation importance. In April 2025, during routine population monitoring in Komodo National Park, an adult male Komodo dragon was captured with a shoulder wound infested by fly larvae. The animal was in good physical condition, and the wound was cleaned and treated before release. A subset of larvae

Infestations of Cochliomyia hominivorax, the New World Screwworm (NWS), has become a reemerging veterinary concern in the United States due to the recent northward expansion of fly detections as far as northern Mexico. Rapid, accurate and validated detection pipelines need to be developed in the case of an incursion into the United States. Confirmatory cases are evaluated by morphological identification with no paired test to verify identifications. With the frequency of submissions of non-ideal samples, particularly from fly traps, a molecular tool would be necessary for species identificatio

Myiasis is an uncommon parasitic infestation caused by Diptera larvae that can affect both humans and animals and spread to various body areas. The rarest form of the disease, oral myiasis, is occasionally found in impoverished third-world nations due to poor sanitation facilities and poor hygiene. Having a thorough understanding of this uncommon illness helps with early detection, which reduces morbidity and death. Hereby, we present a case report of a 17-year-old male patient with poor socioeconomic status and neurological impairment who developed oral myiasis because of poor oral hygiene wh

A case of orbital myiasis caused by Chrysomya bezziana arising from a long-standing, untreated basal cell carcinoma of the medial canthus in a 52-year-old woman is reported. The patient presented with periocular swelling, foul-smelling discharge, bleeding, and visible larvae emerging from the ulcerated lesion. Computed tomography showed orbital soft-tissue involvement with extension into the ipsilateral nasal cavity and ethmoid sinus, and focal bony erosion. Management included prompt mechanical removal of larvae, local wound care, systemic antibiotics, and adjunctive oral and topical ivermect

The New World screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax, is an obligate ectoparasite whose larvae cause severe myiasis, leading to extensive tissue damage and potentially fatal outcomes in dogs if not promptly treated. Dogs play an important epidemiological role in maintaining and disseminating infestations, requiring rapid and effective therapeutic options. Fipronil (FIP) is an insecticide widely used for ectoparasite control with systemic efficacy after oral administration to different species, representing a promising alternative for treating canine myiasis. This study describes the developm

BACKGROUND: Myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax larvae is a reemerging challenge in the Americas due to the recent reappearance of this species in areas where it had been eradicated and reports of doramectin inefficacy, despite its recognition as the most effective avermectin for prevention in cattle. As an alternative, 5% fluralaner administered via pour-on has shown 100% efficacy in the treatment and prevention of myiasis. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of three antiparasitic treatments, namely 1% doramectin administered subcutaneously, 5% fluralaner pour-on, and

The New World Screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax, is an obligate myiasis-causing dipteran native to the Americas. Its larval stages voraciously feed on living tissues of a broad range of warm-blooded hosts, including domestic animals, wildlife, and humans. NWS is a parasite of substantial economic importance due to its deleterious effects on livestock health, productivity, and welfare. This led to highly successful eradication efforts from the United States (U.S.), Mexico, and throughout Central America via mass release of sterile males. Nevertheless, the resurgence of cases in Central A
