Prevalence and risk factors of scabies in children and adolescents in Africa: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Scabies has been identified as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to scabies and its complications. Although scabies is estimated to affect approximately 204 million people worldwide, the prevalence of scabies in Africa is uncertain. Risk factors for scabies are also poorly characterized. This study aimed to comprehensively summarize the available data on the prevalence and risk factors of scabies in children and adolescents in Africa. This is necessary to inform future public health strategies aimed a

Delay in Aceria guerreronis infestation may reduce necrosis and fruit drop in coconut trees.

The coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis, colonizes the fruit perianth, a region covered by floral bracts, which hinders its control. Its attack causes epidermal necrosis, fruit deformation, and premature fruit drop, with yield losses ranging from 10% to 70%. Infestations generally begin in fruit up to three months old. Since the age of the fruit at the time of infestation can influence not only the severity of damage but also fruit abortion, these aspects were investigated through field experiments. Fruit aged 2 to 5 months were artificially infested with A. guerreronis, and every 15 days, necrot

Honey bee hygienic selection impacts virus dynamics of both bees and Varroa mites.

The Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) has reshaped the viral landscape of honey bee colonies, significantly contributing to colony mortality. In response, Varroa-resistant honey bee breeding programs have developed as a promising and sustainable long-term strategy to control Varroa mite infestations in managed colonies. These breeding programs drive the coevolution of hygienic bees and Varroa mites, however the impact of such coevolution on bee and mite viral dynamics remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we investigated how Varroa-resistant traits influence the tripartite interaction

Darwin's solution: Honeybees survive mite vectors and viruses through natural selection.

Complex host-vector-virus interfaces can impose serious health challenges. Western honeybees have experienced high colony losses globally, mainly driven by the host-shifted, virus-vectoring ectoparasitic mites Varroa destructor and Tropilaelaps mercedesae. Host populations can survive mite infestations through natural selection, offering a long-term strategy for colony health. However, host-vector-virus coevolution requires local adaptations of this triad, which is poorly understood. We propose harnessing natural selection through a global approach focused on standardized monitoring of colony

Saving a species, one mite at a time: efficacy of afoxolaner (NexGard®) against Macronyssidae mites in the critically endangered Aeolian wall lizard (Podarcis raffonei).

The Aeolian wall lizard (Podarcis raffonei) is an endangered lacertid species endemic to the Aeolian Archipelago (Sicily, Italy). Its populations are threatened by several factors, including habitat fragmentation and reduction, competition with the invasive Podarcis siculus, and potential health risks associated with disease dynamics. To prevent the extinction of this unique species an ex-situ captive breeding program was established in the Reptile House at the Bioparco of Rome within the LIFE project EOLIZARD. Most animals were housed in outdoor enclosures, favoring the exposure of these naïv

Synthesis and acaricidal activity against Varroa destructor of α- and γ-costic acid dimers.

α-Costic acid is a natural sesquiterpene possessing diverse biological activities. Among these, the most promising property for practical application is its acaricidal activity against Varroa destructor, considered the most important and dangerous parasite of the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.). Infestations of V. destructor can decimate bee populations in just a few years, resulting in substantial environmental and economic losses. This study reports the synthesis of α- and γ-costic acid diesters with ethylene glycol and evaluates their acaricidal efficacy against V. destructor in comparison wit

Scabies and other ectoparasitoses.

Ectoparasitoses are caused by organisms that parasitize their host's skin. They affect a considerable proportion of the global population, with a disproportionately greater burden in disadvantaged individuals and communities, although any human is susceptible. They are more prevalent in tropical climates. They can have a major impact on infected individuals' quality of life and on affected populations, and they can result in severe complications. Despite their contribution to the global burden of disease, ectoparasitoses remain largely neglected. Making their characteristics visible and unders

From urticaria to mites: a diagnostic turnaround in atypical nodular scabies -a case report.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a contagious skin infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, presenting with a wide range of clinical manifestations. Nodular scabies is an uncommon variant that typically affects the genital region. When nodules appear in atypical locations, they may resemble other dermatoses and complicate diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old woman presented with persistent, pruritic nodules on the chest, buttocks, and thighs that clinically resembled papular urticaria. She had previously been treated with topical corticosteroids and antihistamines without improvemen

Single oral-dose fluralaner treatment against Ophionyssus natricis infestation - a large scale study demostrating long-term efficacy in captive snakes.

The hematophagous mite Ophionyssus natricis, vector of several viral and bacterial diseases in snakes, is one of the most challenging pathogens for snake breeders. The high environmental resistance of its larval stage makes repeated treatment of the animals unavoidable, while eradication of the mites from enclosures requires extensive cleansing and disinfection, often involving chemical products with known toxicity. The use of ectoparasiticides of the family of isoxazoline have recently proved effective against both adult and larvae of O. natricis, nevertheless data for fluralaner remains limi
