Cerebral malaria (CM), a life-threatening complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection, is characterized by dysregulated immune responses and blood-brain barrier (BBB) damage. In this study, we found that iron metabolic disorders occurred in the spleen and brain tissues in response to Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbA) infection in a murine CM model. PbA infection promoted lipid peroxidation and induced ferroptosis, manifested as the accumulation of iron ion, elevation of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxide, upregulated expression of the ferroptosis-related protein TFRC and ACSL4, and dow

L-amino acid oxidase (laao) is a key immune factor capable of producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and has been demonstrated to possess significant antibacterial and immunomodulatory functions in a variety of organisms. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the role of laao in the immune defense of fish against Cryptocaryon irritans infection. In this study, the laao of large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) was successfully cloned, and its structural and functional characteristics were systematically analyzed. The full-length ORF of large yellow croaker was 1578 bp, en

An early-adolescent girl from a hydatid-endemic region presented with 3 months of intermittent fever, cough with two episodes of haemoptysis, abdominal pain and fatigue. Examination was non-specific apart from right-upper-quadrant tenderness. Serology for Echinococcus granulosus was positive. Chest radiography and cross-sectional imaging demonstrated multiple hydatid cysts within both lungs, both hepatic lobes and the left kidney, with internal membranes and the pathognomonic 'serpent sign' in one pulmonary cyst. Given multiplicity and distribution across three organs, percutaneous drainage an

BACKGROUND: One of the alternatives for controlling malaria is using mosquito symbiotic bacteria to reduce Plasmodium transmission. Species of Serratia, a genus of the Enterobacteriaceae family, have been isolated from the midgut of mosquitoes and are commonly found in water, soil and plant surfaces. These bacteria have shown great promise in blocking the transmission of Plasmodium in mosquitoes. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize the genus Serratia within the Anopheles gambiae complex from Burkina Faso.
METHODS: Mosquitoes were collected in three field sites located in Hou

Sarcocystis calchasi is the causative agent of Pigeon Protozoal Encephalitis, a neurological disease in pigeons. The biphasic disease is characterized by neurological signs in the chronic phase. Parasite stages are generally not associated with inflammatory brain lesions and the parasite has been suggested to modulate the host’s immune system. To test this hypothesis, pigeons experimentally infected with S. calchasi were T-cell immunosuppressed beginning from 14 days post infection (dpi) until the end of the experiment (59/60 dpi) and compared with immunocompetent animals. When scored histolog

Plasmodium vivax malaria remains a significant global health challenge, complicated by the parasite's ability to form dormant liver stages (hypnozoites) that cause relapses. Radical cure of P. vivax malaria requires administration of a hypnozoitocidal drug, such as primaquine or tafenoquine. However, these drugs can cause severe haemolysis in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. G6PD deficiency is caused by more than 230 different variants at the gene level that confer different degrees of deficiency phenotypically. Understanding the distribution of different G

Cylicospirura is a genus of spirocercid nematodes infecting felids around the globe. Eleven species have been characterised, with C. felineus and C. subaequalis being reported in jaguarundis, Herpailurus yagouaroundi, from Brazil. Herein, we described spirocercid reddish worms collected from three jaguarundis from Costa Rica by using hierarchical clustering and dendrogram plots of morphological characters reported from our specimens and compared to other Cylicospirura spp., histopathological observations of associated lesions, and phylogenetic analyses of both mitochondrial and ribosomal loci.

Intensification of fish aquaculture worldwide has led to severe problems of diseases caused by parasitic dactylogyrideans. In this study, the anti-dactylogyridean efficacy of treating Colossoma macropomum with baths of emamectin benzoate (EMB) was investigated for the first time, along with the effects of this treatment on the haematology and histology of its gills. Thirty-nine fish (three replicates of 13 each) received four consecutive daily baths with EMB at a concentration of 0.5 g L-1 and one control group of 39 fish (three replicates of 13 each) only received water from the cultivation t

INTRODUCTION: Malaria, a life-threatening mosquito-borne disease caused by Plasmodium falciparum, poses a substantial health burden on tropical and subtropical regions. Artemisinin, a sesquiterpene lactone isolated from Artemisia annua L., and its derivatives were initially used as monotherapies for malaria treatment. However, limitations such as short pharmacokinetic half-life and emerging drug resistance have driven the widespread adoption of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) as first-line interventions. A. annua contains other bioactive compounds such as arteannuin B, artemisin

A 19-year-old man with chest pain underwent cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which identified a multilobulated cyst with internal septations located in the lateral left ventricular myocardium, consistent with a hydatid cyst. High-resolution cine and late gadolinium enhancement imaging demonstrated its structure and myocardial involvement. This case shows the capability of cardiac MRI in diagnosing rare cardiopericardial hydatid disease.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is the most common protozoal skin infection worldwide. Multiple treatments for CL have been developed to address issues related to resistance, availability, and safety. Topical treatments have shown promise by reducing unnecessary systemic exposure and providing a viable local therapeutic option. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted of all literature published before 28 February 2025 through PubMed/MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, and EBSCO, comparing topical paromomycin-gentamicin (PG) with topical paromomycin alone (PR). BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a life-threatening parasitic infection transmitted by sand flies. Its clinical manifestations can overlap with those of autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Traditional diagnostic approaches, like bone marrow aspiration, have limited sensitivity for detecting the parasite in peripheral blood. Immunosuppressed patients often present atypically, further complicating diagnosis. Rarely, Leishmania amastigotes (Leishman-Donovan bodies) can be found within neutrophils, which challenges the conventional view that the parasite prim

Otomyiasis, or aural myiasis, is a parasitic disease caused by the infestation of the external and/or middle ear by maggots, the larval stage of flies. It is a rare condition that is most often seen in developing countries, particularly in tropical and rural areas. In this report, we describe a rare case of otomyiasis in an urban setting in the United States in a patient with alcohol use disorder. This case report highlights the importance of vigilance in individuals with predisposing factors who present with ear symptoms.

Dermatophagoides farinae (DFA), the most prevalent aeroallergen in allergic asthma, releases extracellular vesicles (EVs) containing dfa-miR-276-3p, which plays an important role in DFA sensitization. In this study, we utilized AAV-dfa-miR-276-3p to create a mouse model with dfa-miR-276-3p overexpression in lungs. Using this model, we demonstrated that dfa-miR-276-3p acted as a priming factor that exacerbated DFA extract (DFE)-induced airway inflammation in mice. We also confirmed that dfa-miR-276-3p functioned as a priming pro-inflammatory factor in human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells, e

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) relies on host cells for energy and nutrition. Our previous studies showed that T. gondii regulates host cell apoptosis via the mitochondrial pathway, highlighting the essential role of mitochondria in its parasitism. In this study, T. gondii infection was found to significantly affect mitochondrial morphology and dynamic homeostasis in porcine kidney-15 (PK-15) cells, characterized by aggregated, swollen, fragmented, and oval-shaped mitochondria with disappearing cristae, accompanied by increased fusion and decreased fission. Additionally, the energy metabolic re

Toxoplasma gondii is a globally prevalent zoonotic parasite responsible for toxoplasmosis. Accurate serological diagnosis remains challenging due to the lack of standardized, high-performance antigens. In this study, we designed a recombinant multi-epitope protein (ME-TG) by selecting B-cell epitopes from four immunodominant antigens: SAG1, GRA7, GRA4, and GRA14. The ME-TG construct was expressed in E. coli, purified, and evaluated using ELISA across 189 serum samples, including acute (n = 45), chronic (n = 38), healthy controls (n = 62), and individuals with other parasitic or bacterial infec

BACKGROUND: Trichinella spiralis is an intestine- and tissue-dwelled parasitic nematode, the adult worms (AW) and muscle larvae parasitize in intracellular niche of intestinal epithelium and skeletal muscles of the same host, respectively. Intestinal infective larvae (IIL) and AW are two important enteral stages in T. spiralis infection. Their excretory-secretory proteins (ESP) disrupted host's intestinal epithelial barrier and mediated worm invasion. Meanwhile, T. spiralis could induce autophagy of murine intestinal epithelial cells. Autophagy usually plays a role in maintaining the structura

BACKGROUND: The control of onchocerciasis currently relies on yearly distribution of ivermectin to at-risk populations. To tackle onchocerciasis in areas of high transmission (so-called hotspots) and achieve elimination of transmission, several complementary/alternative strategies (biannual ivermectin, doxycycline-based test-and-treat and vector control) were implemented in Massangam Health District (HD) in Cameroon, following World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. A short-term impact evaluation revealed significant reductions in the endemicity levels in three focal hotspot communities (M
