We analysed clinical features and outcome in 850 patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO), based on the 1993 Nationwide Survey of Vasculitis database collected from 3722 clinical sites in Japan. The survey was designed to assess clinical manifestation categorized by Fontaine's classification, distribution of lesions (arterial involvement and migratory superficial phlebitis), response to medical and surgical treatment, and outcome. Mutations in the Gli3 gene are associated with a preaxial polydactyly in several mouse mutants such as extra-toes (Xt). The semidominant mouse mutant Pdn (Polydactyly Nagoya) is characterized by a mild polydactyly on the anterior side of the hind limbs. Homozygous Pdn mice show a more severe polydactyly, additional skeletal malformations, and abnormal brain development. Herein, we report the molecular basis of Pdn, being the integration of an Early Transposon (ETn) into the Gli3 gene. As a consequence, several novel Gli3 mRNAs are generated by alternatively spliced transcripts.

The aim of the study was to monitor the course of digital dermatitis after local antibiotic treatment in an experimental group (treated on diagnosis) and a control group (treated 5 days later). Three cases of complete amputation of the thumb are reported in which the amputated distal parts were not suitable for replantation. In all cases there were either complete or incomplete amputations of other digits. Two different techniques were used for thumb reconstruction: 1) pollicization of a partially amputated digit with transposition microsurgery in case 1; and 2) replantation of a less important amputated digit to the thumb stump for cases 2 and 3. These microsurgical efforts successfully restored thumb function in all three patients.

There is little information on the progression of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) over time. A series of 508 patients with a prior examination for PAD were contacted and brought in for follow-up to evaluate the natural history of PAD. A total of 85 patients were excluded because they had interventions in both limbs prior to their return visit. The deeper tumors can be either benign or malignant and must be treated with caution until a histologic diagnosis has been made. However, malignant soft-tissue tumors of the toes are fairly rare.
