Polydactyly and other minor stigmata associated with 46,XX-47,XX,D+ mosaicism.

Mosaicism for normal and D-trisomic cells was found in a female child whose presenting abnormalities at birth were polydactyly of the left hand and foot, hemangiomata on the forehead and lumbosacral region, slightly peculiar facies and unusual dermal patterns. Her course during the first 27 months of life was characterized by normal growth, absence of clinical evidence of congenital heart disease, moderate developmental retardation, tonguetie and toe-walking. Trisomic cells were more numerous than normal cells in skin cultures, whereas the reverse was true for peripheral leukocytes.

Rubinstein-Taybi syndromes: broad thumbs and great toes, facial abnormalities and mental retardation. aA presentation of three cases.

In 1963 Rubinstein and Taybi described, in seven children, a new symptom-complex characterized by broad thumbs and great toes, facial abnormalities, mental retardation and a cluster of congenital malformations. Since then 14 additional cases have been reported. In this paper three more such children are described. Chromosome studies were normal. The etiology of this disorder is unknown but it is probably genetic.

Pitted keratolysis.

Pitted keratolysis is a superficial infection of the skin confined to the stratum corneum. The causative organism has not been identified. The clinical syndrome is distinct and is characterized by pits and superficial erosions in the pressure areas of the soles and in the lateral surfaces of the toes. The histopathology of the lesions is presented and world literature is reviewed. It is concluded that this disease is not limited to the tropical climates, although cases tend to be more severe in these areas.

Supracondylar amputation in the aged.

Of 105 consecutive supracondylar amputations done at the San Diego County General Hospital during the five-year period, 1953-58, 88 were in patients more than 60 years of age. Occlusive arterial disease was the reason for operation in 85 of the 88 cases. Presenting complaints at the time of amputation were gangrene in 45 cases, pre-gangrene associated with severe pain in 34. Acute arterial occlusion as a cause of thigh amputation was infrequent. The average age of patients requiring thigh amputation from complications of arteriosclerosis obliterans was 78.3 years; for those with diabetic arter

STUDIES ON HERPETIC INFECTION IN MICE : IV. THE EFFECT OF SPECIFIC ANTIBODIES ON THE PROGRESSION OF THE VIRUS WITHIN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM OF YOUNG MICE.

Two-week-old mice inoculated with herpes virus on the pad of a hind foot regularly developed paralysis of the infected limb followed by paraplegia and encephalitis terminating fatally 5 or 6 days after inoculation. Hyperimmune rabbit serum given intraperitoneally at the time virus was inoculated on the foot pad prevented the formation of an herpetic lesion of the foot pad. When the antiserum was given 12 hours after inoculation of the virus, a typical infection of the epithelium of the foot pad developed, but the virus was prevented from causing obvious signs of infection of the nervous system

The Treatment of Pes Cavus: (Section of Orthopædics).

(A) REVIEW OF EARLIER METHODS: Manipulations; fasciotomy; Phelps' operation; Steindler's operation; anterior arch-plates.(B) Reasons for their relative failure.-(1) Correction of the deformity is imperfect, and (2) as they deal with the existing deformity only, and not with its cause, the result is not permanent; relapse occurs.(C) Evolution of the modern operation.-Two facts in connexion with the ordinary "idiopathic" type of pes cavus are constant, and therefore noteworthy, viz.: (a) the deformity is entirely a fore-foot deformity, consisting of dropping-down of the fore-foot, and (b) paraly
