The burden of malaria and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in Mozambique: a nationwide cross‑sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children under five years of age in Mozambique despite ongoing prevention and control interventions. Understanding the sociodemographic and household factors associated with malaria is essential for designing targeted public health strategies. This study aimed to determine the burden of malaria and identify its associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in Mozambique. METHODS: This study used secondary data from the nationally representative 2022-23 Mozambique Demographic and Health Survey. A weighted sample of

High-resolution prediction and risk mapping of Haemaphysalis longicornis habitat suitability in the Jiaodong Peninsula, China.

Ticks are vectors of numerous human pathogens, and accurate predictions of their spatial distribution are essential for the effective prevention and control of tick-borne diseases. High-resolution predictions remain scarce in China. To address this gap, a tick survey was conducted across the Jiaodong Peninsula at 2,647 points during the summer of 2024, integrating high-resolution environmental variables. Seven machine-learning algorithms were used, and ensemble learning was applied, resulting in a habitat-suitability map for Haemaphysalis longicornis at a 10-meter resolution. The ensemble mode

Status of parasitic infections in migratory birds in selected areas of Bangladesh.

Migratory birds are a source of natural beauty and help in maintaining ecosystems, pest control and pollination. However, as with other pathogens, gastrointestinal (GI) parasites residing within migratory birds consequently contaminate the environment through their droppings. The study was aimed at identifying and estimating the prevalence and spatial distribution of GI parasites in migratory birds. To do this, 265 fecal samples were collected, (Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) Lake, Dhaka: 203), (Tanguar Haor, Sunamganj: 62), from October 2022 to March 2023. Samples were process

Phosphatidylserine Blockade Limits Systemic Dissemination of Leishmania Amazonensis Amastigotes.

Leishmania amazonensis is associated with cases of cutaneous, disseminated, diffuse, mucosal, and visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The mechanisms underlying its ability to persist and spread after the initial clinical cure are unclear, although intrinsic characteristics of the parasite and the host may be involved. Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a pathogenic factor in both experimental models and in patients. It is related to macrophage infection, regulation of inflammatory and immune responses, and the extent and severity of the clinical outcomes of the disease. In a murine model of systemic infectio

Epidemiology of malaria in the Torres Strait Islands, Australia, 2000-2025 and the public health response to three recent outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Australia was declared malaria free in 1981. However, the proximity of Australia's Torres Strait region to malaria-endemic Papua New Guinea (PNG), and the presence of the Anopheles mosquito across Northern Australia, means there is an ongoing risk of malaria for many Australian residents. This paper describes the epidemiology of malaria in the Torres Strait region between 2000 and 2025 and reports the public health response to three malaria outbreaks between 2023 and 2025. METHODS: Case data from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2025 were extracted from the Queensland Notifiable Cond

MicroRNAs during Echinococcus spp. infection: a comprehensive systematic review and implications for diagnosis and therapy.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a subclass of small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression and play important roles in infectious diseases. Echinococcosis is a globally distributed disease caused by various species of Echinococcus. The disease can be asymptomatic in the early stages, but if left untreated, it can lead to severe complications. Like other helminths, Echinococcus spp. exhibit immunomodulatory capacities that favour infection establishment and progression. Currently, there is no fully accurate, non-invasive method for early detection of echinococcosis. This systematic re

Health system readiness-the neglected catalyst in Malaria elimination.

BACKGROUND: While strong political commitment and robust technical strategies are essential to drive malaria elimination, the readiness of national health systems ultimately determines whether these commitments can be successfully translated into action. MAIN TEXT: Without adequate preparation, gaps in the health system can undermine the transition from malaria burden reduction to elimination policies, reduce the effectiveness of interventions, and jeopardise progress toward achieving zero local transmission of malaria. Despite its critical importance, there is currently no systematic and com

Ectoparasitic prevention compliance in dogs based on prescription records from veterinary practices in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Fleas and ticks are common and harmful ectoparasites in dogs. They feed on blood, cause irritation, and transmit various pathogens. In Poland, the primary species Ctenocephalides felis (fleas), Ixodes ricinus, and Dermacentor reticulatus (ticks) pose a year-round threat. Veterinary organizations recommend continuous year-round protection against ectoparasites. However, actual owner compliance with this recommendation remains unknown. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed medical records from 2021 to 2023 across 45 veterinary practices in Poland. A total of 44,140 ectoparasiti

Immunosuppression is associated with loss of airway microbiome resilience in severe COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The role of the lower airway microbiome in COVID-19-associated mortality remains poorly understood despite evidence implicating secondary pathogens and non-airway commensals. The influence of prior immunosuppression on the lower airway microbiome and its contribution to mortality in mechanically ventilated patients has been largely unexplored. Given that host-microbiome interactions are dynamic, we assessed longitudinal patterns in the respiratory microbiome associated with mortality and immunosuppression status. RESULTS: We conducted longitudinal forecasting, differential abundan

Analysis of Factors Influencing the Psychological State of Patients After Autologous Liver Transplantation.

BACKGROUND The use of ex vivo liver resection and autologous liver transplantation (ELRA) for end-stage hepatic alveolar echinococcosis is gradually increasing, while postoperative psychological disorders in these patients remain underrecognized. We prespecified that longer pre-transplant waiting time, postoperative complications, and higher transfusion volume would be associated with worse anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance at 1 month after ELRA. MATERIAL AND METHODS This single-center retrospective study enrolled 138 patients who underwent ELRA from 2020 to 2025. We collected demogra

Prognostic utility of immune biomarkers for identifying individuals at risk of unfavourable treatment outcomes in pulmonary tuberculosis.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis remains a major global health challenge, with many patients expe- riencing unfavourable treatment outcomes despite standard therapy. Host immune biomarkers, including cytokines, chemokines, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), have shown promise in predicting disease severity and treatment response, but require validation across independent cohorts. METHODS: We validated previously identified immune biomarkers using baseline plasma samples from a nested case-control cohort within the RePORT India consortium (cases: n=74; controls: n=161). Beyond therapeutic feeding: a call for integrated strategies to end child malnutrition in Somalia.

Somalia records one of the highest global burdens of child wasting and stunting, with approximately 1.7-1.85 million children under five estimated to be affected by acute malnutrition annually during 2022-2025, including approximately 421,000-513,550 children with severe acute malnutrition. For over two decades, the dominant policy response has been community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), a curative intervention that treats clinical endpoints rather than underlying drivers. Despite meeting international cure-rate standards, CMAM alone cannot address the food insecurity, water,

Effect of urine storage conditions on circulating anodic antigen detection using the UCP-LF CAA test.

INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic neglected tropical disease that remains a major public health problem in many African countries. Accurate diagnosis is essential for control, surveillance and elimination efforts. Conventional parasitological methods have limited sensitivity, particularly in low-intensity infections commonly observed after treatment or in low-endemic settings. Circulating anodic antigen (CAA), released by live Schistosoma worms, is a highly sensitive and specific marker of active infection. The up-converting reporter particle lateral flow (UCP-LF) CAA test enables n

Epidemiology and social factors of malaria in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory: a critical review of the challenges of control and elimination.

Malaria in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory (YIT) constitutes a serious public health concern and has been hyperendemic since 1987, following the arrival of illegal gold miners in the area. Disease transmission has steadily increased since 2013, particularly among children. It escalated into a crisis in 2019, driven by the intensification of illegal mining and environmental, sociocultural, and political factors, and reached approximately 33,000 cases in 2024. Although the declaration of a Public Health Emergency in 2023 led to advancements in surveillance and diagnosis, the incidence of cases
