A Single Staged Reconstruction of Upper Eyelid and Eyelashes.

The upper eyelid is a complex structural part of the face that plays an important role in protecting the cornea from drying and damage to preserve vision. The eyelashes are an essential part of the upper eyelid and help in protecting the eyes from dust, foreign bodies, and sweat. Being a part of the face, which is the most noticeable part of the body, both structures hold an important role in reconstructive procedures. Reconstruction of both structures simultaneously is tricky but helps reduce the number of procedures required in achieving an aesthetically acceptable eye. Our techniques descri

Familial fleck corneal dystrophy caused by complete deletion of the PIKFYVE gene.

BACKGROUND: Fleck corneal dystrophy (FCD) is a rare autosomal dominant disease that affects exclusively the corneal stroma. The disease is caused by heterozygous variants in PIKFYVE, a gene encoding a lipid kinase involved in multiple cellular pathways, primarily participating in membrane dynamics and signaling. This report describes a familial case of FCD caused by a complete deletion of the PIKFYVE gene. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A clinical ophthalmic examination was performed on the proband and family members. Genetic testing included next-generation sequencing (multigene panel), and chromosom

Tenon's patch graft for sterile perforation: follow-up with serial, high-resolution, anterior-segment, optical coherence tomography.

Management of corneal perforation depends on the size, location and cause of the lesion. Smaller perforations can be managed with tissue adhesives (TAs), amniotic membrane transplantation or Tenon's patch graft (TPG). Tenon's capsule is an autologous transplant and, as such, does not require to be supplied by an eye bank support. A patient with sterile perforation after foreign body removal came to us. Since the application of TA was already unsuccessful, TPG was performed. The graft integrated well and healed with a vascularised scar. We report the integration of the TPG at the perforation si

Asymptomatic Parasitic Worm Thelazia callipaeda Infection Found during Phacoemulsification: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: We report a case of asymptomatic Thelazia callipaeda infection discovered incidentally during phacoemulsification cataract surgery in March 2024. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old male patient presented with complaints of blurred vision. During a slit-lamp examination, trichiasis was observed, but the patient had no foreign body sensation or itching. He was diagnosed with cataract and underwent phacoemulsification cataract surgery. During the surgery, a white, wriggling worm was discovered in the conjunctival sac and removed. It was later identified as Thelazia callipaeda. The su

Genetically predicted asthma and the risk of abnormal spermatozoa.

BACKGROUND: Several previous animal and human studies have found a strong association between asthma and spermatozoa quality, but whether these associations are causal or due to bias remains to be elucidated. METHODS: We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to assess the causal effect of genetically predicted asthma on the risk of abnormal spermatozoa. Asthma, childhood-onset asthma (COA), and adult-onset asthma (AOA) (sample sizes ranging from 327,670 to 408,442) were included as the exposures. Genetic information for abnormal spermatozoa was obtained from a genome-wi

An unusual cause of abdominal pain in an older female.

Toothpick ingestion is an uncommon condition. It has been reported that an estimated incidence of 3.6 toothpick related injuries per 100,000 people per year. However, the incidence of toothpick-related gastrointestinal tract perforation is as high as 80%, with small bowel perforation accounting for 18% of cases. Common symptoms associated with toothpick ingestion include abdominal pain, fever, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation. However, it may lead to peritonitis, abscesses, and sepsis in severe cases. The diagnosis of toothpick ingestion is difficult. Only a minority (12%) of patients rememb

Occurrence of multiple fistulas decades after ingestion and neglect of numerous thermometers: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of thermometers is a very rare occurrence and associated with penetrations of hollow organs. An event decades ago can lead to the development of fistulas. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 62-year-old male who swallowed multiple thermometers with a length of up to 22 cm over a period of 40 years. Diagnostic imaging presented a retroperitoneal abscess due to a duodenal perforation of the longest thermometer as well as multiple other thermometers stuck in the small intestine. After all thermometers were removed and the abscess drained, the patient showed a clinical

Predictors of spontaneous passage of ingested foreign bodies in adults: twelve years of experience.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body ingestion in adults is commonly encountered in clinical practice. The therapeutic approach of whether to follow-up or extract is often controversial. AIM: We aimed to explore predictors for spontaneous passage of ingested foreign bodies by focusing on foreign body type, length, and location of impaction. METHODS: We performed a 12-year retrospective single-center study. Logistic regression analysis was done to identify predictors of spontaneous passage. RESULTS: Overall, 365 patients with foreign body ingestion were included. The rate of spontaneous passage was 53.7

An asymptomatic perforation of the gastrointestinal tract caused by ingestion of foreign body: A case report.

Ingestion of foreign bodies is very common in clinical practice. However, gastrointestinal perforation caused by a foreign body is rare, as most foreign bodies can pass the alimentary tract spontaneously or be removed endoscopically. Ingesting a foreign body causes gastrointestinal tract perforation in less than 1% of cases that require surgery. In the past, the literature about gastrointestinal tract perforation caused by foreign bodies had been widely reported worldwide. However, the case of foreign bodies causing gastrointestinal perforation without significant abdominal infection was rarel

Small bowel obstruction caused by dehydrated apple ingestion: the challenges of preoperative radiological diagnosis and surgical management.

A man in his 60s with a virgin abdomen presented with sudden-onset generalised abdominal pain and fevers. The night prior, he snacked on supermarket purchased dehydrated apples. CT abdomen and pelvis revealed small bowel obstruction (SBO) to the mid ileum and small amount of free fluid within the pelvis. The patient underwent emergency exploratory laparotomy. High-grade SBO was identified, caused by large obstructing phytobezoars, with three further proximal large phytobezoars identified. All four phytobezoars were extracted and found to be rehydrated pieces of dehydrated apple that had increa

Acute purulent enteritis after appendectomy: report of a case.

Acute purulent enteritis is uncommon, which occasionally occurs in association with mechanical injuries from foreign bodies of helminth parasites and the contaminated food, leading to bacterial invasion. Herein we report a case of acute purulent enteritis after appendectomy. A 44-year-old male was diagnosed with right lower abdominal pain and vomiting. Acute appendicitis was diagnosed, and an open appendectomy was performed. Postoperatively, the patient developed symptoms of small intestine obstruction. A laparotomy revealed necrosis of the small intestine, and resection was performed. Patholo

Computed tomographic diagnosis and clinical outcomes of small intestinal obstruction caused by trichobezoars in client-owned rabbits.

Small intestinal obstruction in rabbits, although demonstrated to be common, is still poorly characterized. The objective of this study was to report features of small intestinal obstruction caused by trichobezoars in rabbits upon CT and their clinical outcomes. Rabbits with a diagnosis of intestinal obstruction that underwent CT scanning were included in this study. From each CT scan, obstruction location, appearance, Hounsfield units, size (mm), volume (mm3), distance from the stomach, and diameter of the small intestine proximal and distal to it, were extracted. Nine rabbits were included i

Unintentional Plastic Blister Ingestion Leading to Intestinal Perforation: A Report of Two Cases.

BACKGROUND Unintentional medication-blister ingestion is rare but frequently leads to intestinal perforation. The diagnosis of intestinal perforation following blister ingestion is often delayed because of an unreliable history and nonspecific clinical presentation. The purpose of this case report is to raise awareness about a rare but difficult diagnosis and its importance in avoiding potentially fatal events. CASE REPORT Herein, we describe successful cases of surgical and endoscopic removal after blister ingestion. The first case was that of a polymorbid 75-year-old man who presented with a
