Familial fleck corneal dystrophy caused by complete deletion of the PIKFYVE gene.

BACKGROUND: Fleck corneal dystrophy (FCD) is a rare autosomal dominant disease that affects exclusively the corneal stroma. The disease is caused by heterozygous variants in PIKFYVE, a gene encoding a lipid kinase involved in multiple cellular pathways, primarily participating in membrane dynamics and signaling. This report describes a familial case of FCD caused by a complete deletion of the PIKFYVE gene. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A clinical ophthalmic examination was performed on the proband and family members. Genetic testing included next-generation sequencing (multigene panel), and chromosom

Tenon's patch graft for sterile perforation: follow-up with serial, high-resolution, anterior-segment, optical coherence tomography.

Management of corneal perforation depends on the size, location and cause of the lesion. Smaller perforations can be managed with tissue adhesives (TAs), amniotic membrane transplantation or Tenon's patch graft (TPG). Tenon's capsule is an autologous transplant and, as such, does not require to be supplied by an eye bank support. A patient with sterile perforation after foreign body removal came to us. Since the application of TA was already unsuccessful, TPG was performed. The graft integrated well and healed with a vascularised scar. We report the integration of the TPG at the perforation si

Ocular fish hook injuries.

PURPOSE: Fishing stands out as a widely enjoyed leisure pursuit. While ocular fishing injuries are infrequent, they carry the potential for severe ocular trauma, and safe extraction of a fish hook can pose challenges. We here in report a series of 21 cases of penetrating injury to the cornea by fish hook, detailing successful surgical interventions employed for their management. The report not only outlines different techniques for the removal of fish hooks but also provides clarification on terminologies associated with various components of a fish hook. METHODS: This was a retrospective stu

Removal of Metallic Foreign Bodies With Complete Penetration of the Cornea: Introduction of a New Approach.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to present a new ab interno approach and relevant case series using a polymer-tipped cannula for the removal of metallic foreign bodies that penetrate the full thickness of the cornea and are located in the posterior corneal region. METHODS: Corneal foreign bodies located on the posterior side of the cornea were gently pushed toward the epithelial side with a polymer-tipped cannula placed using a side-port incision, to be removed without damaging the corneal endothelial layer. The polymer-tipped cannula is specially angled to keep it at a distance from t

Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography-Assisted Surgical Planning for Removal of a Corneal Foreign Body: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Corneal foreign bodies account for nearly one-third of all eye injuries and are a common emergency in ophthalmology. While many cases are straightforward, involving clear diagnosis and treatment, some present significant challenges due to the complexity of the foreign body involved. OBSERVATION: A 20-year-old male presented with discomfort in his right eye following an accident while cutting a tree without wearing protective eyewear. Examination using slit-lamp biomicroscopy revealed a reed foreign body embedded in the cornea. Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OC

The use of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in the imaging diagnostics of intracorneal foreign bodies.

BACKGROUND: Eye injuries are a serious problem and may result in reduced visual acuity. The most common eye injuries include corneal damage, often involving the presence of a foreign body. OCT examination of the anterior segment - AS OCT - may be a valuable test in the diagnostics and follow-up of patients in whom the presence of a foreign body after eye trauma is suspected. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors present the case of a young man diagnosed with multiple, glass, intrastromal corneal foreign bodies. A 30-year-old patient visited an ophthalmologist a few days after an eye injury accompani

Clinical applications of in vivo confocal microscopy enhance the detection and management of ocular surface disease in dogs and cats.

In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a unique imaging technique that permits noninvasive evaluation of the ocular surface on the cellular level. High-resolution images of all layers of the cornea are obtained in real-time with IVCM, and the acquired images are often comparable to ex vivo histochemical analysis of corneal biopsy specimens. The basic morphological features of the healthy living cornea as viewed by IVCM are reported in many domestic animal species, and the number of published descriptions of ocular surface pathologies in companion animals is progressively expanding. There is gre

A Huge Conjunctival Atypical Fibroxanthoma.

We report the case of a Hispanic male whose conjunctival atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) grew very large, with intraocular as well as extraocular muscle extensions, and was treated with exenteration. A 50-year-old male presented with a one-month history of foreign-body sensation in his left eye. The initial examination revealed an erythematous, vascularized, pedunculated lesion arising from the left eye conjunctiva. A tissue biopsy from the lesion confirmed the diagnosis of an AFX with a small component of squamous cell carcinoma. The patient was intermittently lost to follow-up until, one-and-a-

Modified sutureless and glue-free method versus conventional sutures for conjunctival autograft fixation in primary pterygium surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pterygium is a common ocular surface disorder that requires surgical intervention for treatment. Conjunctival autografts are preferred over simple excision due to lower recurrence rates. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the modified sutureless glue-free (MSGF) method with conventional sutures (CS) for conjunctival autograft fixation in primary pterygium surgery. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, Google Scholar and ClinicalTrials.gov for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing MSGF and CS conjunctival autografts. The Role of 20% Ethanol in Enhancing Pterygium Surgery Outcomes: A Clinical Study.

Introduction Pterygium is an ocular surface disorder characterized by a hyperplastic growth of conjunctiva encroaching over the cornea. It causes redness, watering, and foreign body sensation. Surgical excision is the preferred mode of treatment when there is encroachment over the visual axis, chronic irritation, restricted ocular motility, and cosmetic concerns. Various surgical methods have been adopted for the treatment and to prevent recurrences. This study assessed the effectiveness and safety of 20% ethanol as an adjuvant in pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft implantation, ev

An unusual cause of hemolacria: retained contact lens in upper fornix.

A 64-year-old male was referred for complaints of blood in tears and bloody discharge of unknown cause in the left eye. The patient was a chronic bandage contact lens (BCL) user. He had no history of recent trauma. A blood-stained BCL was present on the cornea in the left eye, which was removed. The ocular surface was dry with vascularization of the cornea. Double eversion of the upper eyelid with a Desmarre's retractor revealed a pyogenic granuloma with large papillae on the forniceal conjunctiva and a folded BCL hidden in the fornix. The folded BCL was carefully removed from the "upper forni

Outcomes of retropupillary iris claw lens implantation in patients with intraocular lens dislocation and low (less than 1000 cells/mm2) corneal endothelial cell density.

BACKGROUND: Posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation is a common complication of cataract surgery. Dislocated IOLs often require surgical intervention due to the potentially severe risks of leaving this condition untreated. If a patient with extremely low corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) presents with IOL dislocation, the surgeon faces a crucial dilemma of choosing the most optimal surgical treatment option. We sought to investigate the efficacy and safety of retropupillary iris claw intraocular lens (R-IOL) implantation in patients with IOL dislocation and extremely low (< 1
