OBJECTIVE: The practice of early burn wound excision and wound closure by immediate autologous skin or skin substitutes is the preferred treatment in extensive deep partial and full-thickness burns. To date there is no proven definite medical treatment to decrease burn wound size and accelerate burn wound healing in modern clinical practice. Stromal vascular fraction is an autologous mixture that has multiple proven beneficial effects on different kinds of wounds. In our study, we investigated the effects of stromal vascular fraction on deep partial-thickness burn wound healing.

Electrical burns are among the most devastating types of burns, with wide-ranging injuries. They can sometimes occur in the context of fishing, usually involving high voltages. The authors present the case of a 59-year-old-man who suffered a sports accident during a fishing competition, with the formation of an electrical arc due to proximity of the fishing rod and high voltage cables. He presented burns affecting 3% of TBSA, third degree deep burns on trunk and left hand; no signs of cardiac injury. He was admitted to our Burn Unit for monitoring, care dressing and surgical treatment; complet

AIM: The purpose of this study was to test utility of different fitness field tests to predict self-reported low-back pain (LBP) in youth.
METHODS: A sample of 376 school aged (4th through 10th grade students) first completed a survey instrument designed to assess past events (and degree) of LBP. On subsequent days, participants completed a battery of different muscular fitness tests including the current FITNESSGRAM trunk extension test. Receiver operator characteristic curves (ROC) were used to test the utility of single and combined scores from various tests to predict self-reported LBP.

Conventional therapy for burns has always produced a nightmarish illness for patients. The lack of the ability to prevent contractures often produces dysfunctional limbs and the ugly scars resulting from severe burns are an ongoing reminder of this lengthy painful illness. This study is to determine the effectiveness of topical heparin in burns management among some patients at the Burns Intensive Care Unit (BICU) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kumasi, Ghana. Patients for this prospective study were burns victims who were transported to the Accident and Emergency Center of KATH.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies suggest that activation of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3β may be involved in burn injury-induced metabolic derangements and protein breakdown in skeletal muscle. However, the mechanism for GSK-3β activation after burn injury is unknown. To investigate the role of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in this scenario, a major mediator of inflammation, we examined the effects of a specific inhibitor for iNOS, L-NIL, on GSK-3β activity in skeletal muscle of burned rats.

This is a case report of decontamination and treatment of a 70% hydrofluoric acid (HF) dermal splash injury. A worker was splashed with 70% HF, sustaining approximately 10% TBSA first- to third-degree chemical skin burns of the face, trunk, and left thigh and leg. Initial decontamination involved water rinsing, removal of contaminated clothing, more water rinsing, topical application of magnesium oxide, and administration of intravenous narcotics for management of severe pain. After a delay of approximately 3 hours, active skin washing with Hexafluorine®, 5 L, was performed, followed by intrav

The incidence of burn injuries in pregnancy is low. Nevertheless, burns can cause maternal and foetal mortality and should be treated aggressively if substantial. Minor burns may frequently be managed without hospitalization. A 27-year-old primigravid woman with a gestational age of 38+6 presented with an abdominal partial-thickness burn covering 3% of her total body surface area. Conservative treatment was conducted in the emergency department. Medical induction of labour was performed. A healthy boy was delivered vaginally within 36 hours after the injury.

Oxidative stress after burn injuries leads to systemic capillary leakage and leukocyte activation. This study evaluates whether antioxidative treatment with high-dose vitamin C leads to burn edema reduction and prevention of leukocyte activation after burn plasma transfer. Donor rats underwent a burn (n = 7; 100 degrees C water, 12 seconds, 30% body surface area) or sham burn (37 degrees C water; n = 2) procedure and were killed after 4 hours for plasma harvest. This plasma was administered to study rats (continuous infusion). Rats were randomized to four groups (n = 8 each; burn plasma alone

The morphology of burn injuries in 120 consecutive patients from the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, CHR, Hospital B in Lille was correlated to the etiology and type of heat. Analysis identified five typical patterns of cutaneous burn injuries. Jet of flame-pattern from methylated spirits and gasoline detonations: superficial burn injuries; sparing of skin wrinkles and the submental region; absence or small amounts of soot; preference of exposed body regions, esp. the face and hands. Explosion-pattern from explosions and electrothermal injuries: superficial burn injuries; spa

Chronic wounds pose important problems in clinical practice and their treatment is difficult and costly. Here we describe a new delayed wound healing animal model. Fifteen male New Zealand rabbits were used in this study. A horizontal incision 4 cm in length was made on the dorsal part of the torso and pure skin flaps were raised in front of and behind this incision. This exposed the panniculus carnosus layer and it was resected. Skin flaps were returned to their places and sutured. After a 3 week period of healing third degree burn injury was inflicted using hot metal plates both on the heale
