Stepwise Management of Severe Thoracogenic Scoliosis in Burned Child.

BACKGROUND: Skin and soft tissue retraction secondary to burns of the trunk may induce severe and progressive thoracogenic spinal deformities in children. Its management is rarely described. CASE DESCRIPTION: Our study reports a case of severe thoracic scoliosis in a 13-year-old adolescent, secondary to soft tissue retraction due to trunk burn in early childhood. The Cobb angle of the scoliosis was 100 degrees. The 3-stage surgical strategy consisted of scar excision and skin graft in the first stage, halo gravity traction in the second stage, and posterior correction and fusion of the spine

A rare approach? Microsurgical breast reconstruction after severe burns.

Breast deformity, in post-burn patients, is a common problem leading to lower self-esteem and reclusive behavior that impairs quality of life. The authors present the course of treatment of an 18-year-old immigrant girl who suffered second- to third-degree burns over approximately 20% of her total body surface area in her early childhood. The second- to third-degree burns were located on her right trunk and abdomen, as well as her right shoulder, neck, and right groin area. Since it was not offered in her home country, reconstructive surgery, including microsurgical breast reconstruction, was

Hybrid NOTES transvaginal intraperitoneal onlay mesh in abdominal wall hernias: an alternative to traditional laparoscopic procedures.

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal wall hernias are increasingly treated by laparoscopic placement of an intraperitoneal onlay mesh (IPOM). We present an alternative technique for women: the laparoscopic-assisted transvaginal IPOM. METHODS: Before surgery, all patients underwent a gynecological examination. The patients agreed to IPOM repair via a transvaginal approach, and written informed consent for surgery was obtained. Pneumoperitoneum was established with a Veress needle at the umbilicus. This access was subsequently dilated to 5 mm (VersaStep), and a 5-mm laparoscope was inserted. Under laparosco

Stromal vascular fraction improves deep partial thickness burn wound healing.

OBJECTIVE: The practice of early burn wound excision and wound closure by immediate autologous skin or skin substitutes is the preferred treatment in extensive deep partial and full-thickness burns. To date there is no proven definite medical treatment to decrease burn wound size and accelerate burn wound healing in modern clinical practice. Stromal vascular fraction is an autologous mixture that has multiple proven beneficial effects on different kinds of wounds. In our study, we investigated the effects of stromal vascular fraction on deep partial-thickness burn wound healing. METHODS: In t

[Second-degree burn in a pregnant woman].

The incidence of burn injuries in pregnancy is low. Nevertheless, burns can cause maternal and foetal mortality and should be treated aggressively if substantial. Minor burns may frequently be managed without hospitalization. A 27-year-old primigravid woman with a gestational age of 38+6 presented with an abdominal partial-thickness burn covering 3% of her total body surface area. Conservative treatment was conducted in the emergency department. Medical induction of labour was performed. A healthy boy was delivered vaginally within 36 hours after the injury.

High-dose vitamin C treatment reduces capillary leakage after burn plasma transfer in rats.

Oxidative stress after burn injuries leads to systemic capillary leakage and leukocyte activation. This study evaluates whether antioxidative treatment with high-dose vitamin C leads to burn edema reduction and prevention of leukocyte activation after burn plasma transfer. Donor rats underwent a burn (n = 7; 100 degrees C water, 12 seconds, 30% body surface area) or sham burn (37 degrees C water; n = 2) procedure and were killed after 4 hours for plasma harvest. This plasma was administered to study rats (continuous infusion). Rats were randomized to four groups (n = 8 each; burn plasma alone

Amnion in the treatment of pediatric partial-thickness facial burns.

BACKGROUND: Wound coverage for second-degree burns remains a clinical challenge. Human amniotic membranes have been used for many years in the treatment of burns; however, no large prospective clinical trials have been published. In this article, we present a novel and standardized procurement and processing method for amnion and investigate, whether the use of this biological dressing is safe and may represent a new therapeutic option for children with partial-thickness facial burns compared to standard topical treatment. METHODS: Patients with partial-thickness burns of the face, neck and h
