Electrical burns in sports fishing: a case report.

Electrical burns are among the most devastating types of burns, with wide-ranging injuries. They can sometimes occur in the context of fishing, usually involving high voltages. The authors present the case of a 59-year-old-man who suffered a sports accident during a fishing competition, with the formation of an electrical arc due to proximity of the fishing rod and high voltage cables. He presented burns affecting 3% of TBSA, third degree deep burns on trunk and left hand; no signs of cardiac injury. He was admitted to our Burn Unit for monitoring, care dressing and surgical treatment; complet

iNOS inhibitor, L-NIL, reverses burn-induced glycogen synthase kinase-3β activation in skeletal muscle of rats.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies suggest that activation of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3β may be involved in burn injury-induced metabolic derangements and protein breakdown in skeletal muscle. However, the mechanism for GSK-3β activation after burn injury is unknown. To investigate the role of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in this scenario, a major mediator of inflammation, we examined the effects of a specific inhibitor for iNOS, L-NIL, on GSK-3β activity in skeletal muscle of burned rats. MATERIALS/METHODS: Full-thickness third degree burn injury comprising 40% of total body surface

Seventy per cent hydrofluoric acid burns: delayed decontamination with hexafluorine® and treatment with calcium gluconate.

This is a case report of decontamination and treatment of a 70% hydrofluoric acid (HF) dermal splash injury. A worker was splashed with 70% HF, sustaining approximately 10% TBSA first- to third-degree chemical skin burns of the face, trunk, and left thigh and leg. Initial decontamination involved water rinsing, removal of contaminated clothing, more water rinsing, topical application of magnesium oxide, and administration of intravenous narcotics for management of severe pain. After a delay of approximately 3 hours, active skin washing with Hexafluorine®, 5 L, was performed, followed by intrav

The morphology of cutaneous burn injuries and the type of heat application.

The morphology of burn injuries in 120 consecutive patients from the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, CHR, Hospital B in Lille was correlated to the etiology and type of heat. Analysis identified five typical patterns of cutaneous burn injuries. Jet of flame-pattern from methylated spirits and gasoline detonations: superficial burn injuries; sparing of skin wrinkles and the submental region; absence or small amounts of soot; preference of exposed body regions, esp. the face and hands. Explosion-pattern from explosions and electrothermal injuries: superficial burn injuries; spa

A new experimental delayed wound healing model in rabbits.

Chronic wounds pose important problems in clinical practice and their treatment is difficult and costly. Here we describe a new delayed wound healing animal model. Fifteen male New Zealand rabbits were used in this study. A horizontal incision 4 cm in length was made on the dorsal part of the torso and pure skin flaps were raised in front of and behind this incision. This exposed the panniculus carnosus layer and it was resected. Skin flaps were returned to their places and sutured. After a 3 week period of healing third degree burn injury was inflicted using hot metal plates both on the heale

Escharotomies, fasciotomies and carpal tunnel release in burn patients--review of the literature and presentation of an algorithm for surgical decision making.

Escharotomies are usually performed in patients with circumferential third degree burns of the extremities or anterior trunk. Fasciotomies are recommended for patients who sustained high voltage (or associated crush) injuries, with entrance or exit wounds in one or more extremities. Carpal tunnel release is practiced routinely in some services for cases of electrical injury. We have reviewed the literature which provides relatively little information as to when should these procedures actually be performed and what would happen if they were not done. We present a series of patients treated at

Amnion in the treatment of pediatric partial-thickness facial burns.

BACKGROUND: Wound coverage for second-degree burns remains a clinical challenge. Human amniotic membranes have been used for many years in the treatment of burns; however, no large prospective clinical trials have been published. In this article, we present a novel and standardized procurement and processing method for amnion and investigate, whether the use of this biological dressing is safe and may represent a new therapeutic option for children with partial-thickness facial burns compared to standard topical treatment. METHODS: Patients with partial-thickness burns of the face, neck and h

Burn injury in children.

The authors have analyzed the data files of 580 child patients up to 15 years of age who were hospitalized at the Burn Center of the FNsP Hospital in Ostrava in the years 1999 - 2003. The authors focused on mechanisms of burn injury in relation to the age of a child as well as extent, depth, localization, and local treatment of the injury. The data file was divided to four age groups: up to two years of age, 2 - 5 years of age, 5 - 10 years of age, and 10 - 15 years of age. As regards the mechanisms of injury, the authors have analyzed scalding by hot liquids, burns due to contact with a hot o

[Repair of postburn hand using scarred skin and an abdominal flap in patients with severe burns].

OBJECTIVE: To introduce a method for repairing and restoring hand function of the patients suffering from large surface area burn with scarce normal skin for reconstruction. METHODS: Seven patients (ten hands) were treated in our department from April 1994 to February 2001. The TBSA involved with second- or third-degree burns was 85%-96%. All the hands had severe scar contracture on the dorsum and lost most of their function. A scarred skin flap, based on the ulnar border of the hand was elevated integrally on the dorsum. A random-pattern abdominal flap at a less-scarred area was designed and

Burn properties of fabrics and garments worn in India.

A full-scale human form dummy was designed for studying the burning of common dress assemblies (i.e. combination of garments) worn in India. The dummy was made in eight parts; each made of a steel shell filled with water so as to replicate properties of skin-tissue combination. Four thermocouples were fixed on the dummy for measuring torso, neck and face temperatures. The dummy was clothed separately in three women's dress assemblies (saree, salwar-khameez and nightgown) and men's dress assemblies (kurta-pyjama, shirt-pant and lungi), and ignited at the feet by a flat flame. The tests showed t

[Safety considerations to avoid current-induced skin burns in MRI procedures].

The safety aspects of radiological methods continue to evolve. In this paper we report on two cases of skin burns in MRI caused by induced electrical current. A second- and a third-degree skin burn occurred during imaging in a 1.5 T system. The electromagnetic radiofrequency field inadvertently led to electrical currents caused by a conducting loop through the extremities and trunk. Skin burns induced by electrical current may occur in extremely rare cases even with standard MR imaging protocols operating within all current safety guidelines by inadvertently forming a closed conducting loop.
