Herein, we present a case of 53-year-old psychotic woman with acute esophageal necrosis (black esophagus), who was found lying on the floor in the living room of her flat. BACKGROUND: Three dopamine receptor genes have been identified that are highly conserved among arthropod species. One of these genes, referred to in honey bees as Amdop2, shows a close phylogenetic relationship to the a-adrenergic-like octopamine receptor family. In this study we examined in parallel the functional and pharmacological properties of AmDOP2 and the honey bee octopamine receptor, AmOA1. For comparison, pharmacological properties of the honey bee dopamine receptors AmDOP1 and AmDOP3, and the tyramine receptor AmTYR1, were also examined.

Schizophrenia is characterized by three major symptom classes: positive symptoms, negative symptoms, and cognitive deficits. The present post-hoc analysis investigated the speed of onset of therapeutic effect of the atypical antipsychotic, risperidone, in direct comparison with conventional antipsychotics. It has been argued that the efficacy superiority found in meta-analyses for some of the atypical antipsychotics is an artifact of higher dropout rates due to side effects in the haloperidol group combined with last-observation-carried-forward (LOCF) analyses. We compare the rate of drug release through the degradation of 50:50 polylactic-co-glycolic acid polymer pellets, for six different drugs: Thiothixene, Haloperidol, Hydrochlorothiozide, Corticosterone, Ibuprofen, and Aspirin. Despite using the same polymer matrix and drug loading (20% by weight), we find that the rate of polymer degradation and the drug release profile differ significantly between the drugs. We conclude that the design of biodegradable polymeric drug carriers with high drug loadings must account for the effect of the drug on the polymer degradation and drug release rate.

RATIONALE: Flupentixol (FLX) has been used as a neuroleptic for nearly 4 decades. Conventional antipsychotics are often associated with late-occurring undesirable movement effects. To gain more experience with newer antipsychotic agents, 151 patients in an acute admissions department were switched from treatment with conventional antipsychotics to sertindole between late 1996 and early 1998.
