Postpandemic Trends in Pediatric Respiratory Virus Hospitalizations: A Multicenter Study, 2019-2025.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly altered the circulation of respiratory viruses in children, changing the epidemiology of acute lower respiratory tract infections. In the postpandemic period, respiratory pathogens showed marked temporal variability. The 2024-2025 season was the first respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season in Italy during which RSV immunoprophylaxis with nirsevimab was implemented, allowing evaluation of recent trends in pediatric hospitalizations. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study across 16 pediatric hospitals in Italy. Hospitalizations of

The Economic Burden of Foodborne Diseases in Singapore.

OBJECTIVES: Foodborne Diseases (FBD) are a significant public health issue worldwide, affecting both low and high income countries with over 600 million cases reported in a year. This study provided the first estimate of the economic cost of FBD in Singapore. METHODS: The incidence of FBD was first estimated using local data sources. We estimated the cases in the community by applying relevant foodborne and underreporting multipliers elicited through expert opinion and the existing literature. The direct and indirect costs associated with the cases were used to estimate the total economic cos

Chemsex and uptake of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among adult cisgender gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men worldwide: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of summarized information regarding the uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among HIV negative gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) who engage in chemsex. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize, assess the quality of existing evidence, estimate the prevalence of PrEP uptake among GBMSM who engage in chemsex, based on available global evidence; and evaluate whether engagement in chemsex is associated with increased odds of PrEP uptake in this population. METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane Reviews and CENTRA

Black Death of 1348 in Florence and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) in the 650th anniversary of the death of the writer Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375).

The 650th anniversary of the death of the Tuscan writer Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) provides an opportunity to reread some pages of his masterpiece, the Decameron, from a historical-medical perspective. In this work, Boccaccio gives an account of the "Black Death", a devastating pandemic of bubonic plague, which reached Europe, Messina (Sicily), from Asia Minor in September of 1347. The plague travelled along the commercial route taken by Genoese sailors returning from their strategic trading posts at Kaffa on the Crimean Peninsula, which was under siege by the Mongols. The framework, the c

Hypoxia-Inducible Factor Prolyl Hydroxylase Inhibitors for Treatment of Anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease: Guidelines for South Asia.

This guideline addresses the use of hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs) in patients >18 years with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and anemia in South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka). It also summarizes recommendations for anemia treatment for individual HIF-PHI molecules under two categories: dialysis-dependent and non-dialysis-dependent CKD patients. The recommendations do not apply to pediatric (≤12 years) and adolescent (12 to 18) patients or those with primary anemia or anemia secondary to other causes such as blood loss, cancer (any

Semiparametric Estimation of Relative Causal Effects in Randomized Controlled Trials With Noncompliance.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard for causal inference and are widely used. However, valid analyses of RCTs are often complicated by non-compliance, which can lead to confounding bias and biased causal effect estimation. The main challenge comes from compliance datasets in both the treatment and control groups both following two-component mixture models. The maximum nonparametric likelihood estimator is inconsistent in a two-component mixture model even if the mixture proportion and one of the components are completely known, but the other component is unknown. In this

Safety, effectiveness, and acceptability of antenatal penicillin allergy evaluation: a systematic review.

Approximately 8% to 13% of pregnant patients report a penicillin allergy. Penicillins and other beta-lactams are widely used in pregnancy but are often avoided in these patients, resulting in suboptimal therapy, antimicrobial resistance, higher costs, and increased morbidity for patients and neonates. True penicillin allergy is rare, and 95% of unverified penicillin allergies are delabeled upon evaluation. Although penicillin allergy evaluation is safe and recommended for pregnant patients, few patients are assessed. Research concerning antenatal penicillin allergy evaluation is accelerating,

Global Assessment of Health Utilities Associated with Pneumococcal Disease in Adults: Targeted Literature Reviews.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal disease can significantly reduce quality of life (QoL). Health utilities are commonly used to assess QoL burden and calculate quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), which are critical inputs in cost-utility analyses (CUAs) to evaluate the economic value of pneumococcal vaccines. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to synthesize utility values used in CUAs of pneumococcal vaccines in adult populations in North America and Europe and to summarize global utility studies on pneumococcal disease and post-meningitis sequelae (PMS) in adults. METHODS: Two targeted literature reviews

Bidirectional Risk Association Between Hidradenitis Suppurativa and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is an inflammatory skin disease of the pilosebaceous unit encompassing painful, recurrent, and malodorous abscesses, inflammatory nodules, dermal sinus tracts, and cicatrices. Hidradenitis suppurativa has been linked to several comorbidities, including inflammatory bowel disease, though evidence is limited by small sample sizes and possible bidirectional associations remain uncertain. A large-scale, propensity-score matched retrospective cohort study was performed using the TriNetX platform to investigate bidirectional risks between hidradenitis suppurativa and inflamm

Hospital readmission rates and factors due to COVID-19 reinfections: a registry-based cohort study in Brazil (2020-2022).

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccination emerged as a key strategy to reduce disease severity and curb the pandemic's spread, proving crucial in preventing complications and hospitalizations. Despite its positive impact, hospital readmissions due to COVID-19 reinfections have been observed, influenced by emerging variants and individual clinical and demographic characteristics. Given the limited evidence on such readmissions, studies based on representative samples are essential to better understand the associated factors. This study aims to analyze the role of vaccination, identify clinical and demog
