Comparative Enzyme Inhibitory and Antioxidant Activities of Selected Turkish Medicinal Plants With LC-MS/MS Profiling of Morus nigra Extract.

The enzyme inhibitory and antioxidant activities of eight medicinal plants from Türkiye were investigated in vitro. Extracts were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase, α-amylase, pancreatic lipase, and pancreatic cholesterol esterase, together with antioxidant properties using DPPH radical scavenging, metal chelation, and ferric-reducing power assays. Among the tested samples, Morus nigra extract exhibited the strongest α-glucosidase inhibition (IC50 = 43.34 ± 1.76 µg/mL) and showed moderate activity against pancreatic lipase and α-amylase. LC-MS/MS analysis of the 80% ethan

Third Trimester-Equivalent Alcohol Exposure Induces Alterations in Locomotor Activity, Anxiety and Risk-Related Behaviors, and Susceptibility to Mechanical Allodynia in Adulthood in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) can lead to the development of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), which are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by behavioral dysregulation, learning deficits, and cognitive inflexibilities. Alcohol exposure is harmful at all stages of human gestation, including the third trimester. This developmental window-characterized by rapid brain growth, myelination, and neural circuit formation-may be particularly vulnerable, yet the long-lasting behavioral and sensory consequences of exposure during this period remain poorly understood. Optimization and characterization of a low-toxicity trans-anethole nanoemulsion for controlling the soil-borne bacterial pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum.

Plant-derived trans-anethole (TAN) exhibits favorable antibacterial activity and biocompatibility, but poor solubility, photolysis, and volatility limit its use. Here, we prepared a TAN nanoemulsion (TAN-NE) via low-energy emulsification using non-ionic surfactants (polyethylene glycol tert-octylphenyl ether and polyoxyethylenated castor oil) and a co-surfactant (anhydrous ethanol). TAN-NE had spherical morphology, particle size of 20.68 nm, formulation yield (92.16%), encapsulation efficiency (88.49%), and loading efficiency (3.60%). It showed improved water solubility, photostability, and st

Phase-specific impairment of fear memory and hippocampal synaptic potentiation in rats after prolonged ethanol exposure.

Chronic alcohol consumption is known to impair cognitive function, but its effects on specific phases of memory processing remain incompletely understood. In the present study, we examined whether prolonged ethanol exposure alters associative fear memory and hippocampal synaptic plasticity. Rats were exposed to ethanol chronically and assessed using a fear conditioning paradigm. Chronic ethanol exposure selectively reduced the long-term expression of conditioned fear, while leaving acquisition and extinction learning largely intact. Electrophysiological recordings from hippocampal slices showe

Biochar enhance biobutanol production by modulating redox cofactors and allocating reducing power.

Acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation is a promising route for converting carbohydrate-rich feedstocks into biobutanol, but its efficiency is fundamentally constrained by the inefficient intracellular allocation of reducing power. Biochar addition can improve fermentation performance, but the mechanisms underlying this enhancement remain insufficiently resolved. Here, we investigated the fermentation performance, intracellular redox cofactors, and proteomic responses of Clostridium acetobutylicum to corn straw biochar prepared at different pyrolysis temperatures. We found that the pyrolys

The Modulatory Role of Nicotine and Alcohol in State-Dependent Learning and Memory.

State-dependent learning occurs when memories formed under specific conditions or drug influence are best retrieved in the same state. Though complex, its mechanisms are not fully understood. Nicotine and ethanol are key substances affecting this process. This review highlights recent findings on state-dependent memory and examines the impact of these substances. Research involved defining questions and searching databases like PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar using keywords such as "nicotine," "ethanol," and "state-dependent learning." Both substances influence memory, either enhancing or i

Adhesive, Chemically Resistant and Antibacterial Protein Films by Coacervating Mineralization of Noble Metal-Binding Elastin-Like Polypeptides.

Protein films (PFs) provide a sustainable, biocompatible platform for food packaging, biomedical, and advanced technological applications. However, chemical resistance and the incorporation of desirable characteristics imparted by nanoparticles are often difficult to achieve and require multi-step processing. Here, we describe a one-pot strategy for fabricating chemically-resistant PFs using fusion proteins that combine the noble-metal mineralization activity of Au/Ag-binding peptides with the thermally controlled liquid-liquid phase separation of elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs). While protei

Fermentation-Promoting Peptides Enhance Yeast Robustness during Very High Gravity Fermentation by Reinforcing Antioxidant Defenses and Modulating Intracellular Metabolism.

Very high gravity (VHG) fermentation imposes multiple stresses that impair yeast performance. The effects of fermentation-promoting peptides and their corresponding amino acids on yeast physiology and metabolism were systematically examined under VHG conditions. Peptide supplementation, particularly LL (Leu-Leu), LLL (Leu-Leu-Leu), and LML (Leu-Met-Leu), significantly enhanced yeast growth and ethanol production compared with free amino acids. Peptide-treated cells exhibited alleviated oxidative stress, as evidenced by reduced intracellular ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, preservation of

Promotion effect of nutrient competition and secreted compounds on ethanol tolerance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in co-culture with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae serves as a cornerstone microorganism in industrial fermentation, and its production processes frequently involve co-fermentation with companion microbes. Among these, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are commonly employed in combination with S. cerevisiae for various fermentation applications. Our previous work has demonstrated that co-cultivation with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum confers improved ethanol tolerance on yeast cells. Nevertheless, the precise determinants responsible for this beneficial effect remain incompletely elucidated. In the present study, we performed

Selective enrichment of milk phospholipids via cryo-crystallization: application to various dairy matrices and elucidation of sphingomyelin crystallization mechanisms.

Milk sphingomyelin (SM) is a bioactive phospholipid involved in infant neurodevelopment and gut health; however, its proportion in dairy by-products is around 20% of total phospholipids, compared to over 30% in human milk, limiting its application in infant formula products. The molecular mechanisms underlying the selective enrichment of SM during cryo-crystallization were elucidated. Cryo-crystallization increased total phospholipid content by 2.12-fold, while the SM proportion increased from 27% to 41%. Lipidomics revealed preferential enrichment of very-long-chain fatty acid-containing phos

Wine processing as a chemical driver for reprogramming the metabolomic profile and color phenotype of Radix Paeoniae Rubra: an integrative molecular networking and thermochemical study.

Wine processing is a long-established strategy in herbal food manufacturing, yet the molecular rules by which rice wine reshapes complex herbal matrices and translates chemical remodeling into visible quality traits remain poorly defined. Here, Radix Paeoniae Rubra (Rpr), a representative medicinal-edible herb, was used to construct an integrated "processing-metabolism-phenotype-mechanism" framework by combining a four-factor, multi-level processing design with color phenotyping, UPLC-Q-TOF-MS-based metabolomics, multivariate statistics, machine-learning-assisted feature selection, feature-bas

Interfacial Hydroxyl Chemistry and Electronic Modulation in Pd/In(OH)3 Promote Electrochemical Suzuki-Miyaura Coupling.

Electrochemical Suzuki-Miyaura coupling (eSMC) offers a sustainable alternative to thermally driven cross-coupling reactions; however, its development remains limited by inefficient catalytic systems and incomplete mechanistic understanding. Herein, we report In(OH)3-supported Pd nanoparticles (Pd/In(OH)3) as an efficient electrocatalyst for eSMC between aryl bromides and arylboronic acids under mild conditions. The catalyst delivers near-quantitative conversion (99%) with exclusive selectivity toward biaryl products at 30 °C in an ethanol/H2O mixed solvent, without the need for an inert atmos

Physicochemical properties and antioxidative stability of curcumin-loaded oleogel made with ethyl cellulose enhanced by soy lecithin.

Curcumin-loaded liposome-ethyl cellulose (CLE) complexes are developed to overcome curcumin degradation and weak gel networks in PUFA-rich oleogels. Curcumin liposomes, prepared with soy lecithin and cholesterol, are combined with ethyl cellulose (EC), and the optimal CLE formulation (13 wt% lecithin/EC, 40% ethanol) is selected by encapsulation efficiency and stability. When incorporated into linseed oil, CLE enhances oil binding (91.88%) and hardness (352.47 g) vs EC-only oleogels, indicating reinforced network. CLE oleogels exhibit lower peroxide value (PV) and p-anisidine value (p-AV) than

Multi-Component Broadband Absorbers Detection via Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy: First Harmonic Signal Analysis and Processing.

Measuring broadband absorbers remains a challenging task for tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), and the simultaneous quantification of multi-component mixtures further complicates such measurements due to overlapping absorption spectra and inter-species interference. In this paper, we propose a new WMS approach based on first harmonic (1f) signal analysis and processing for simultaneous detection of multiple broadband absorbers. By applying a logarithmic transformation to the transmitted intensity, the demodulated 1f component becomes linear in absorbance and thus does not re

Fluorescence Quenching Efficiency and Sensing Mechanism of Donor-Acceptor-Type Nitroaromatic Compounds Using Poly(3-thiophene ethoxide)-CTAB Complex.

A surfactant-assisted strategy was employed to enhance the photoluminescence properties of polythiophene for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs). Poly(3-thiophene ethanol) (P3TE) was synthesized via chemical oxidative polymerization and subsequently complexed with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to form a stable and soluble P3TE-CTAB complex. Structural characterization using Fourier transform infrared spectra, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron microscopy confirmed the successful complexation an

Ultra-high pressure-assisted enzymatic extraction enhances phenolic release and functional potency in fermented dark tea extracts.

This study aimed to enhance the extraction efficiency of tea polyphenols from dark tea using ultra-high pressure-assisted enzymatic extraction (UHPAEE). Extraction conditions were optimized by single-factor experiments and Box-Behnken design. Under the optimal conditions, the polyphenol content reached 77.23 ± 0.98 mg/g. Compared with UHPAEE, the polyphenol contents obtained by ethanol extraction and ultra-high pressure extraction were 44.81% and 25.73% lower, respectively. Untargeted metabolomics profiling detected 2788 metabolic features. These were classified into 80 compound classes, inclu

A multi-modal mass spectrometric approach for lipid analysis enabled by online fractionation of complex mixtures in a solid-phase extraction cartridge.

This study aimed to develop a direct infusion analytical platform for analyzing complex lipid mixtures using a solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge. The SPE cartridge was developed in-house and coupled to a contained-electrospray ionization (cESI) source, which enabled online fractionation of lipids followed by real-time mass spectrometry (MS) analysis of eluates. The SPE cartridge was packed with a silica sorbent. We used multiple solvents with varying polarities to sequentially elute and characterize different lipids. To stabilize the electrospray signal derived from nonpolar organic solve
