Renal Clear Cell Carcinoma With Late Metastasis to the Submandibular Gland: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Metastasis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) to the head and neck region is rare, accounting for approximately 8%-14% of all RCC metastases. The thyroid gland is the most common site of metastasis in this region. However, RCC is known for its ability to metastasize to unusual anatomical sites, including the salivary glands. Approximately 0.1% of metastatic salivary gland neoplasms originate from renal malignancies, and the parotid gland is the most frequently involved site. Metastases to the submandibular and sublingual glands are considerably less common. In this report, we present a 62-year-old

Recurrence of drooling after submandibular gland surgery: increased severity or altered expectations?

BACKGROUND: Despite the over-all effectiveness of surgery for drooling in youth with neurodisabilities, a degree of recurrence of drooling is observed in part of the population. This study explores the recurrence after submandibular gland surgery. In addition, it compares patients who experience this with those with a durable effect to identify patient characteristics associated with recurrence. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients aged 8-21 years at time of surgery who received non-rerouting surgery (submandibular gland excision or submandibular duct ligation) between 2

A Rare Case of Nodular Fasciitis of the Hard Palate with Complete Clinical Resolution.

Nodular fasciitis is a rare, benign, and self-limiting proliferation of fibroblasts and myofibroblasts. It is occasionally encountered in the head and neck region, but only a few cases were reported in the palate (1-3). Case: We report the case of a 24-year-old female patient presenting with an exophytically growing, pedunculated palatal mass. According to the patient, the lesion had developed overnight and measured 12 mm in diameter at clinical presentation two weeks later. An initial incisional biopsy was interpreted as a pyogenic granuloma. The lesion then enlarged to 30 × 20 mm within thre

Chronic High-Fat Diet Downregulates M3 Muscarinic and β1-Adrenergic Receptor mRNA Expression and Alters Submandibular Gland Histology in Wistar Rats.

INTRODUCTION: A chronic high-fat diet (HFD) is associated with metabolic disturbances, inflammation, oxidative stress, and functional impairment in several organs. However, its effects on autonomic receptor expression and submandibular gland histology remain insufficiently understood. The submandibular gland contributes 65 to 75% of basal salivary secretion and is central to salivary function. This study aimed to investigate the effect of chronic HFD exposure on M3 muscarinic receptor and β1-adrenergic receptor mRNA expression, as well as histological changes, in the submandibular glands of Wi

A site-specific risk stratification model for extranodal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in the oral cavity and maxillofacial region.

OBJECTIVE: Extranodal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the oral cavity and maxillofacial region (OC-MR) is rare compared to Waldeyer’s ring (WR) DLBCL, characterized by marked aggressiveness and prognostic heterogeneity. This study aims to develop a special risk stratification model for extranodal DLBCL in OC-MR to overcome the limitations of the conventional International Prognostic Index (IPI) to improve outcome prediction in this high-risk population. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 76 OC-MR DLBCL patients (43 extranodal and 33 WR-DLBCL) diagnosed between January 20

Posterior simulation-based calibration tests of phylogenetic dating methods.

Simulation-based calibration (SBC) checking is a method to ensure that the inference machinery for a Bayesian statistical analysis is functioning in a correct and unbiased manner. Typically, SBC begins with sampling parameter values from the model priors (prior SBC). However, it has been shown that prior SBC can miss problems when these manifest only in certain regions of parameter space. In phylogenetics, this is relevant not only because of the vastness of tree and parameter space, but also because many phylogenetic analyses involve some degree of model misspecification. Posterior SBC is a r

Large B-cell Lymphoma With IRF4 Rearrangement in the Elderly.

Large B‑cell lymphoma with IRF4 rearrangement (LBCL‑IRF4) predominantly affects children and typically presents with Waldeyer's ring and/or head and neck involvement, limited stage, and favorable outcomes. Reports in older adults are rare, and comparability to pediatric disease remains uncertain. We describe an elderly LBCL-IRF4 case with a solitary parotid lesion. Histology showed diffuse large B‑cell lymphoma, germinal center B‑cell type, with co‑expression of CD10, BCL6, and IRF4/MUM1. Karyotyping identified t(4;6)(p14;p25) involving 6p25 (IRF4), and fluorescence in situ hybridization confi

Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Hard Palate: A Case Illustrating Grading Uncertainty and Bone-Sparing Surgical Management.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the hard palate presents diagnostic and surgical challenges, particularly regarding histological grading and preservation of the underlying palatal bone. Histological grading remains controversial because of multiple grading systems and inter-observer variability. A 42-year-old man presented with a painless 10-12 mm right paramedian hard-palate swelling that had been present for approximately 12 months, with slight enlargement over the preceding two months, identified incidentally during routine dental examination. Biopsy confirmed MEC. MRI and CT demonstrated

Algorithm for the Treatment of Oronasal Communications: Introducing a Novel Classification.

INTRODUCTION: Breach of the palate leading to a pathological communication between the oral cavity and the nose is known as oronasal communication/fistula (ONC). Various methods for the closure of communications have been reported in the literature, such as obturators, local flaps, and microvascular surgery. Due to the lack of a classification system for ONC, the purpose of this study was to trace an operative algorithm in a group of patients affected by ONC who underwent surgical reconstruction of the oronasal communication. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted for all patients affec

Brain activation in persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) in response to various visual motion stimuli eliciting abnormal egomotion perception.

BACKGROUND: Patients with persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) perceive unsteadiness associated with abnormal ego- or visual motion perception. We tested for altered functional brain activation of PPPD patients and healthy subjects (HC) while applying various visual motion stimuli (VS). METHODS: Functional brain activation of 32 PPPD patients and 35 age- and gender-matched HC was examined using 3 types of VS-videos: a rollercoaster front row ride (rollercoaster, ROL), optic flow (flowfield, FF), and a silent black-and-white movie (movie, MOV). Fixation of a centered target was used

Maxillary oral mucosa exhibits region-specific but No direction-dependent mechanical tensile properties.

This study investigated the regional and direction-specific tensile properties of native human oral mucosal tissues. Tissue specimens were harvested from three distinct maxillary regions, namely the hard palate, attached gingiva, and alveolar mucosa from 11 partially dentate donors, totaling 34 specimens. Using the osmotic stress protocol to standardize water content, specimens underwent uniaxial tensile testing. Mechanical parameters, including elastic modulus, Cauchy stress and stretch at failure, were calculated and statistically analyzed. The attached gingiva yielded a higher elastic modul

One-Stage 2-Vector Reconstruction for Facial Paralysis and Hypoplasia in Hemifacial Microsomia Using Dual Latissimus Dorsi Adipo-Muscular Flap Transfer.

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is characterized by unilateral craniofacial hypoplasia and is frequently associated with facial paralysis. Dynamic reanimation, in addition to facial augmentation, is important for aesthetic and functional improvement. Most publications on dynamic reanimation have focused on oral commissure elevation during smiling. However, severe lower lip depressor paralysis, often observed in patients with HFM, also requires reconstruction to improve aesthetic symmetry. Here, we report the simultaneous reconstruction of oral commissure elevation, lower lip depression, and cheek

Subchronic Exposure to Cannabis-Based Nanoemulsions Induces Histopathological and Molecular Alterations in the Rat Submandibular Gland.

The increasing therapeutic incorporation of cannabis has expanded phytocannabinoid application, yet peripheral adverse effects like xerostomia raise concerns regarding emerging biotechnological formulations. This study evaluated the effects of cannabis-based lipid nanoemulsions on the rat submandibular gland parenchyma. Forty male Wistar rats were distributed into five daily oral treatment groups for 21 days: vehicle control, CBD and THC (2.5 and 5 mg/kg), and isolated CBD (2.5 and 5 mg/kg). Submandibular glands were assessed via histopathology (H&E), acinar histomorphometry, periodic acid-Sch

Why I Open the Neck: Counterpoint.

Durable neck rejuvenation often requires direct management of subplatysmal anatomy rather than reliance on platysmal tightening. Effective deep neck surgery requires commitment to address all relevant structures with a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy. When appropriately performed, complication rates are much lower than perceived. Through clinical experience, anatomic studies, and revision outcomes, excess deep cervical volume, particularly from the submandibular glands, is the primary driver of recurrent neck deformity. An algorithmic, sequential approach to deep neck management is
