Design and synthesis of novel benzothiazole-pyrazole derivatives: cytotoxicity against panc-1 cancer cells and EGFR, antioxidant activity, molecular docking, MD simulations, ADMET, and DFT analysis.

INTRODUCTION: While most doctors believe they have a major role to play in breastfeeding promotion, and consider it worthwhile taking time to assist women to continue to breastfeed, it appears that gender and personal breastfeeding experience affect their attitude and confidence concerning breastfeeding issues. As doctors practicing in rural and regional areas may be expected to provide a greater degree of assistance and support for breastfeeding women, their views on these topics are of particular interest. This article reports the results of qualitative interviews with eight GP registrars fr

A taxonomy of key performance errors associated with hyperangulated video laryngoscopy for emergency intubation.

BACKGROUND: Video laryngoscopy (VL) is now ubiquitous in emergency airway management. Hyperangulated video laryngoscopy (HAVL) differs from standard geometry VL (SGVL) in blade design, technique, and required microskills, yet the two are often regarded similarly. Despite widespread use, no comprehensive taxonomy of HAVL-specific performance errors exists. METHODS: We conducted an observational study of video-recorded endotracheal intubations (ETIs) performed in an urban academic emergency department (2020-2024). Fifty HAVL videos were first analyzed to derive 20 performance errors, followed b

Postoperative respiratory distress due to unilateral arytenoid oedema following prolonged i-gel® anaesthesia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Supraglottic airway devices are widely used for general anaesthesia owing to their ease of insertion and reduced laryngotracheal stimulation compared with tracheal intubation. Although pharyngolaryngeal complications associated with supraglottic airways are generally mild and transient, prolonged use may cause serious perilaryngeal tissue injury. We report a case of clinically significant unilateral arytenoid oedema presenting with postoperative respiratory distress following general anaesthesia with an i-gel® supraglottic airway in situ for more than seven hours. CASE PRESENTATION

Sex and BMI as predictors of pill residue in dysphagia: a multivariate analysis.

We aimed to explore the specific challenges encountered by individuals with dysphagia when taking oral medications, focusing on the types of dysphagia that impede pill swallowing and the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and pill residue. We retrospectively reviewed 70 patients who underwent videofluoroscopic swallowing studies at the Department of Dysphagia Rehabilitation, Tokyo Medical and Dental University Dental Hospital between May 2013 and March 2020. Patients were assessed for pill residue in various anatomical locations, including the mouth, epiglottic vallecula, and piriform

Association Between Findings on Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies and Pneumonia Onset in Residents of Elderly Care Facilities.

Introduction Residents of elderly care facilities are at high risk of aspiration and frequently develop pneumonia. Despite this, swallowing function is often not assessed when pneumonia occurs. We evaluated the association between findings on videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSSs) and the onset of pneumonia among elderly care home residents. Methods This retrospective study included residents admitted to a university-affiliated hospital for VFSSs following an acute illness. Participants were categorized into a pneumonia group (n = 29) and a non‑pneumonia group (n = 27). Six VFSS paramete

Dysphagia Characteristics and Its Neuroanatomical Correlates in Korean Patients With Subcortical Vascular Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Subcortical vascular cognitive impairment (SVCI) is frequently associated with dysphagia, but its specific characteristics and underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the swallowing characteristics in SVCI patients and examine their neuroanatomical correlates using diffusion tensor imaging-voxel-based morphometry (DTI-VBM). METHODS: Eighty-five SVCI patients and 20 normal controls underwent videofluoroscopic swallowing studies and 3.0-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging. Swallowing components were evaluated using Modified Barium Swallow

An Aberrant Internal Carotid Artery Mimicking a Pharyngeal Mass: A Rare Cause of Dysphagia.

Aberrant course of the internal carotid artery (ICA) within the pharyngeal wall is an uncommon vascular anomaly that can present with symptoms mimicking structural or neoplastic lesions. Recognition of this variation is critical to avoid catastrophic complications during diagnostic or therapeutic interventions. Case Presentation: An 89-year-old woman presented with a one-year history of gradually progressive, painless, and persistent dysphagia. Clinical examination was unremarkable. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed a bulge in the left lateral pharyngeal wall just above the level of the vocal cor

Dexmedetomidine with lidocaine topical anesthesia reduces emergence agitation and postoperative pain after pediatric tonsillectomy.

Tonsillectomy is among the most frequently performed surgical procedures in pediatric patients. The incidence of postoperative pain in children after tonsillectomy is high. Patient age and postoperative pain are significant factors that increase the incidence of emergence agitation in children. The study aims to evaluate the impact of spraying dexmedetomidine and lidocaine on the bilateral tonsillar fossa before tonsillectomy on postoperative pain and agitation in children. A total of 140 children aged 4-12 years, who underwent elective tonsillectomy were randomly assigned to four groups: Grou

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Management and Outcomes of Recurrent Ranulas.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and compare recurrence rates associated with different management strategies for simple and plunging ranulas. METHODS: A PRISMA-guided search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and CINAHL was performed. Studies reporting post-treatment outcomes of ranulas with clearly defined initial management strategies were included. Two reviewers independently screened studies and extracted data on ranula subtype, treatment details, duration of follow-up, and recurrence. Risk of bias was assessed using study design-appropriate tools. Given the predominance of re

Non-Contiguous Double Thyroglossal Duct Cysts: A Case Report.

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TDCs) are conventionally considered solitary lesions connected to a persistent embryological tract. While rare double TDCs have been reported, they are almost invariably anatomically continuous. We report a paradigm-shifting case of non-contiguous double TDCs in a 50-year-old male, featuring two anatomically discrete cysts at the left vallecula and infrahyoid region with no interconnecting tract, to our knowledge, a finding not previously documented in this distinct anatomical configuration. Both lesions were completely excised and pathologically confirmed. This case c

Mature Cystic Teratoma of the Ventral Tongue in an Infant: A Case Report.

Mature cystic teratomas most commonly arise from the ovaries and testes, but may also occur at extragonadal sites, with a relatively higher incidence in children. However, mature cystic teratomas located on the ventral surface of the tongue are exceedingly rare. We report a case of a 6-month-old female infant with a gradually enlarging oral mass since birth, causing feeding and breathing difficulties. The tumor was situated beneath the mucosal layer on the ventral tongue. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging suggested a sublingual gland cyst or dermoid cyst, but histopathological examinatio

Localized Tonsillar Amyloidosis Associated With a Plasma Cell Neoplasm Presenting as an Oropharyngeal Mass: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Amyloidosis is a rare and heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by extracellular deposition of misfolded proteins, which may present as either localized or systemic disease. In the head and neck region, the presentation of amyloidosis is uncommon and may clinically mimic neoplastic processes. We report the case of a 58-year-old man with a five-year history of progressive oropharyngeal symptoms, initially perceived as a foreign body sensation and intermittent odynophagia, later evolving to dysphagia to solids. Physical examination revealed marked asymmetry of the palatine tonsils due t

Clinical Outcomes of Polidocanol Foam Sclerotherapy in Treatment of Sublingual Ranula.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Ranula is a mucus retention cyst originating from the sublingual gland, and surgical intervention has traditionally been the main treatment. However, surgery is often associated with recurrence, risk of nerve injury, and patient discomfort. Sclerotherapy using polidocanol, a low-toxicity agent, has emerged as a promising minimally invasive alternative. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes and safety of polidocanol injection therapy in patients with sublingual ranula. METHODS: This retrospective study included 34 patients with sublingual ranula who underwen

An Uncommon Extensive Bilateral Continuous Ossification of the Stylohyoid Chain Extending to the Hyoid Bone in Eagle's Syndrome: A Case Report.

Eagle's syndrome is a rare cause of cervicofacial pain and dysphagia arising from elongation of the styloid process or ossification of the stylohyoid ligament complex. While styloid elongation >3 cm is relatively common, extensive continuous ossification of the stylohyoid chain with continuity to the hyoid bone remains uncommon. We report a 42-year-old man with a six-month history of persistent throat pain and globus sensation unresponsive to conservative measures. Clinical examination showed bilateral tonsillar fossa tenderness with palpable bony projections, more pronounced on the left. Cone

Dose-Dependent Protective Effects of Agmatine on Sublingual Gland Dysfunction and Pancreatic Damage in Experimental Diabetes: Evidence From Histological, Biochemical, and Immunohistochemical Analyses.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) induces endocrine and exocrine dysfunction, including salivary gland impairment. While the sublingual gland (SLG) contributes to saliva production, its involvement in diabetes remains understudied. Agmatine (AGM), a naturally occurring polyamine, exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; however, its protective effects on the SLG and pancreas in diabetes have remained largely uninvestigated. This study introduces new insights into SLG injury in diabetes and the dose-dependent protective benefits of AGM through multi-level analysis. Male Wistar rats were rend

Effect of tonsillar fossa suturing in adolescents and adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Tonsillectomy is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in otolaryngology. Postoperative hemorrhage (PTH) and pain remain major concerns, particularly in adolescents and adults, in whom complications are more severe. The role of tonsillar fossa suturing after tonsillectomy in reducing these complications is still controversial. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for studies comparing tonsillectomy with suturing (TS) versus without suturing (TNS) in patients older than 10 years. RESULTS: Seven studies involving 3

Clinical Diagnosis and Management of Bilateral Plunging Ranula.

Ranula is a benign salivary gland lesion originating from the sublingual salivary gland. This condition is primarily associated with salivary extravasation and retention due to obstruction or injury of the submandibular duct. A plunging ranula represents a rare variant occurring in the neck, submandibular, or submental regions, with bilateral presentations being particularly uncommon. Clinically, due to its lack of specificity, it is easily confused with other cervical lesions. This paper reports a case of a 25-year-old female presenting with bilateral painless submandibular masses. MRI reveal
