From Reduction to Replacement: Challenges and Proposed Solutions for Animal-Free Safety Assessment of Hydrocarbon UVCB Substances.

The European Commission (EC) developed a Roadmap to phase out animal testing, with milestones and practical steps across 15 different European chemical legislations (EC 2026). Currently though, the number of animals used for compliance testing in the EU remains high, particularly for high-volume chemicals such as Petroleum Substances, and is expected to increase with the introduction of new hazard classes under Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP). A reduction in animal testing for these substances can be achieved today by grouping, read-across and composition-activity models leveraging historical

Natural source zone depletion predicts finite longevity for petroleum products in soil and groundwater.

From environmental concerns to economics, managing inadvertent releases of petroleum products in soils and groundwater is a significant concern. Here, estimates of specific petroleum product volumes ranging from 80,000 to 800,000 L/hectare are developed using cryogenic coring techniques at 5 sites. Heat generated from natural petroleum hydrocarbon oxidation at 10 sites provides daily estimates of Natural Source Zone Depletion (NSZD) over 0.43 to 3.07 years. NSZD rates ranging from 4,000 to 20,000 L/hectare/year are relatively constant in time and apparently independent of specific product volu

Target lipid model update and proposed refinement of HC5 calculation procedure.

For over two decades, the target lipid model (TLM) has been used to characterize the aquatic toxicity of hydrocarbons, petroleum products, ionic, and other non-ionic organic chemicals across a wide range of organisms. The TLM has also been applied to derive hazard concentrations intended to protect 95% of aquatic species (i.e., HC5). The TLM database has expanded to include multiple acute and chronic data (more than 100 species from eight major taxonomic groups) across more than 400 individual chemicals for both standard apical (e.g., mortality, reproduction, growth) and relevant non-apical en

Toxicokinetic and Partial Mass Balance Assessment of 14C-Alpha Olefins in Rats.

Higher olefins are a class of alkenes widely used as intermediates in the production of essential consumer and industrial products. This radiolabel disposition and partial mass balance study investigated the distribution and excretion of four 14C-radiolabelled alpha higher olefins (i.e., 1-octene, 1-decene, 1-hexadecene, and 1-eicosene) in male Wistar rats following a single oral dose (100 mg/kg). Blood, liver, kidney, adipose tissue, urine, and faeces were collected and analysed for total 14C-derived radioactivity. Urinary elimination was rapid, with approximately 70% and 90% of total radioac

Drone-based needle trap device array coupled with portable mass spectrometry for onsite analysis of hazardous air pollutants.

BACKGROUND: Onsite detection of hazardous air pollutants is crucial for environmental monitoring, as such pollutants can be rapidly released and diffused from emission sources into the surrounding and upper air, often occurring in locations that are difficult or unsafe for human access. Traditional field sampling approaches pose challenges in providing timely molecular identification and spatial characterization of pollutants under such dynamic and hard-to-reach conditions. Therefore, the development of rapid, sensitive, and field-deployable analytical strategies for air pollutant monitoring i

Detection of Hydraulic Oil-Polluted Soil Using a Low-Cost Electronic Nose with Sample Heating.

Monitoring soil contamination from petroleum products is vital for protecting human health and the environment. In forestry, hydraulic oil spills frequently result from leaks in equipment such as harvesters. This study evaluates a custom-built, inexpensive electronic nose, equipped with a Figaro TGS gas sensor array, for discriminating between pristine and contaminated soil samples. Two oil types and three pollution intensities were analyzed. The constructed electronic nose applied two sensor operation modes: (i) response to change of sensor operation condition from clean air to target odors a

Screening and Identification of Diesel Biodegrading Bacteria Isolated From Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Garage Soils of Kericho County, Kenya.

Despite the benefits of petroleum hydrocarbon as essential raw energy sources in many industries, they cause major global environmental pollution. Petroleum hydrocarbons pollutants are highly toxic and recalcitrant, making them dangerous and persistent over long periods in an ecosystem. However, oil contaminated soil is enriched with microorganisms that can utilize petroleum products and hydrocarbons for their growth, nutrition, and metabolic activities. This study aimed to isolate and characterize hydrocarbons-degrading bacteria capable of degrading hydrocarbons in soil samples obtained from

Performance Evaluation of Ni-Al2O3 Adsorbents in Diesel Desulfurization and Study on the Structure-Performance Relationship.

Fuel oil has the highest output among petroleum products. The incomplete combustion of sulfides in gasoline and diesel pollutes the environment. Focusing on the refractory thiophenic sulfides in diesel, xNi-Al2O3 adsorbents were prepared by the coprecipitation method. A micro fixed-bed reaction device was used to systematically study their desulfurization performance in industrial diesel and simulated diesel, and the adsorbents were characterized by BET, XRD, H2-TPR, H2-HOT, XPS, and so on. The results show that after H2 reduction treatment, under the conditions of normal temperature and press

Na-W-Mn/SiO2 Catalyst With MnOx Regulated NaWOx Sites for Low-Temperature Oxidative Coupling of Methane.

The oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) reaction can directly convert CH4 into C2 (ethylene, ethane), which is vital for converting the world's abundant natural gas into valuable chemicals. Na-W-Mn/SiO2 catalyst with high thermal stability and catalytic activity has been widely studied. However, the high temperature required for OCM reaction over Na-W-Mn/SiO2 catalyst has restricted its application. The development of low-temperature OCM catalysts is currently one of the hot topics in research. This study regulated the MnOx-Na2WO4 interaction by adjusting the Mn loading, inducing changes in ox

White-light-excited multicolour room-temperature phosphorescence: Mg2+-coordinated metal-organic amorphous composites for anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

The development of white-light-excited room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials with tunable emission remains a significant challenge for practical applications. Herein, we report a novel strategy to achieve this goal using amorphous metal-organic amorphous composites (MOACs) based on Mg2+ coordination. Mechanistic studies reveal that the MgO coordination bonds not only broaden the visible-light absorption but also suppress non-radiative decay by restricting molecular motion and blocking O2 permeation within the rigid MOACs matrix. By rationally redesigning the luminescent centers, we s

Physicochemical-mineralogical characterization of automobile garage soils with identification of potentially toxic elements (trace metal elements, total petroleum hydrocarbons) and principal component analysis.

Petroleum spills are increasingly reported in tropical regions, particularly at non-compliant automobile garages. Consequently, this study aimed to characterize soils contaminated by petroleum products from automobile garage sites and to assess their potential environmental impacts. To achieve this, soil physicochemical properties, trace metal elements (TMEs), mineralogical composition, total solvent extractable materials (TSEM), and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) were analyzed using standard analytical techniques. Results indicated that control soils (CS) were alkaline (pH 9.05) with trac

A Review of Nanomaterials in Heavy-Oil Viscosity Reduction: The Transition from Thermal Recovery to Cold Recovery.

Heavy oil and extra-heavy oil represent mobility-limited petroleum resources because supramolecular associations of asphaltenes and resins, together with strong interfacial resistance, generate extremely high apparent viscosity. In recent years, nanotechnology has emerged as a promising approach for viscosity management and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). This review critically examines recent advances in nano-assisted viscosity reduction from a reservoir-operational perspective and organizes the literature into two field-relevant categories: metal-based and non-metal nano-systems. Metal-based na

Numerical simulation study on the mechanism of plasma E/N controlling the methane selective oxidation reaction.

The maximum methanol selectivity in plasma driven methane oxidation at a specific reduced electric field (E/N) arises from kinetic competition between the CH3O + H + M and CH3OH + O pathways. Tuning E/N to balance these competing rates achieves high selectivity, providing a principle for process design.

Using lignin waste as additives to bitumen for the sustainability of the circular economy: A study of the interaction of mixture components.

The growing role of the circular economy, the shortage of oil, and the expansion of its application areas have led to the search for and use of alternative raw materials that can replace/supplement petroleum products. One direction is the use of lignin, which is produced during cellulose production and can be used as a component/substitute for bitumen binders. Despite significant scientific research in this area, the use of oxidized long-term storage lignin has not been practically studied. Therefore, the purpose of this work was basic research on the interaction between bitumen and lignin, wh

Robust integrated multi-modal network design for green petroleum distribution under uncertainty.

Globally, a significant volume of petroleum products is transported daily through logistic networks to meet diverse regional demands, where unreliable or delayed delivery can lead to serious economic, social, and political consequences. The primary contribution of this research is the development of a comprehensive, robust multi-period mathematical model for the integrated planning of a green multi-modal petroleum product logistic network. This model advances current frameworks by simultaneously integrating pipeline, rail, and road transportation; synchronizing strategic facility development w

Bio-inspired stearic acid functionalized polylactic acid nanofibers with nanodome architecture for enhanced oil-water separation.

Growing environmental risks from oil spills and pressing demand for sustainable oil-water separation solutions underscore an urgent need for eco-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective sorbent materials. In this study, we developed superhydrophobic nanofibers for rapid and efficient oil-water separation through surface modification with stearic acid. Polylactic acid (PLA) pellets were covalently grafted with stearic acid to introduce long-chain alkyl groups by Steglich-like esterification, followed by air-spray nebulization of the surface functionalized PLA to fabricate extremely light-weight
